Greetings to all in the Name of the Risen Lord!May our worship this glorious morning celebrate the joy and hope, peace and presence, of our Lord Jesus Christ, raised to life for us. We welcome all, especially our guests. If you do not have a church home, please consider Divine Shepherd. We would love to have you as part of our family. Please take a minute and sign our guest book.

A prayer before WorshipThis is the day you have made, O Lord Jesus, a day of new life and eternal celebration! The stone is moved; death is defeated; heaven is open. As Your disciples first saw and believed Your victory over the tomb, so give us joy in the promise You made and keep for us: because You live, we live also! Amen.

The Lord’s SupperThe Lord’s Supper is celebrated by us this morning in the confession and gladness that, as our Lord says, He gives into our mouth not only bread and wine but His very body and blood to eat and drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with Him and with one another. Our Lord Jesus invites to His table those who trust His Words, repent of all sin, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as He forgives and loves us, that they may show forth His death until He comes.

Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the blood of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. (1 Cor 11:28 ESV) Holy Communion is a confession of the faith which is confessed at this altar.  Any who are not yet instructed, in doubt, or hold a confession differing from that of the Holy Scriptures, this congregation, and the Lutheran Church~Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive the sacrament, are asked to speak with Pastor Sturzenbecher.

709 The King of Love My Shepherd Is1 The King of love my shepherd is,

Whose goodness faileth never;I nothing lack if I am His And He is mine forever.

2 Where streams of living water flow, My ransomed soul He leadethAnd, where the verdant pastures grow, With food celestial feedeth.

3 Perverse and foolish oft I strayed, But yet in love He sought meAnd on His shoulder gently laid And home rejoicing brought me.

4 In death’s dark vale I fear no ill With Thee, dear Lord, beside me,Thy rod and staff my comfort still, Thy cross before to guide me.

5 Thou spreadst a table in my sight; Thine unction grace bestoweth; And, oh, what transport of delight From Thy pure chalice floweth!

6 And so through all the length of days Thy goodness faileth never;Good Shepherd, may I sing Thy praise Within Thy house forever!

Old Testament Reading 1 Samuel 16:1–131The LORD said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over

Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.” 2And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” And the LORD said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.’ 3And invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. And you shall anoint for me him whom I declare to you.” 4Samuel did what the LORD commanded and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling and said, “Do you come peaceably?” 5And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 6When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the LORD’s anointed is before him.” 7But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or

on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.” 8Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the LORD chosen this one.” 9Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the LORD chosen this one.” 10And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The LORD has not chosen these.” 11Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.” 12And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the LORD said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” 13Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah. A This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

Catechetical ReviewThe Lord’s PrayerThe Second PetitionThy kingdom come. What does this mean? The kingdom of God certainly comes by itself without our prayer, but we pray 8

Page 9: The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost€¦  · Web viewA prayer before Worship. This is the day you have made, O Lord Jesus, a day of new life and eternal celebration! The stone

in this petition that it may come to us also. How does God's kingdom come? God's kingdom comes when our heavenly Father gives us His Holy Spirit, so that by His grace we believe His holy Word and lead godly lives here in time and there in eternity.

Epistle 1 Corinthians 13:1–131If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. 4Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6it does not rejoice at wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. 7Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. 11When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 12For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. 13So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

A This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel Luke 18:31–43P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the eighteenth

chapter.C Glory to You, O Lord.

31Taking the twelve, [Jesus] said to them, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished. 32For he will be delivered over to the Gentiles and will be mocked and shamefully treated and spit upon. 33And after flogging him, they will kill him, and on the third day he will rise.” 34But they understood none of these things. This saying was hidden from them, and they did not grasp what was said. 35As he drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36And hearing a crowd going by, he inquired what this meant. 37They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” 38And he cried out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 39And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 40And Jesus stopped and commanded him to be brought to him. And when he came near, he asked him, 41“What do you want me to do for you?” He said, “Lord, let me recover my sight.” 42And Jesus said to him, “Recover your sight; your faith has made you well.” 43And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him, glorifying God. And all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

Offering

PrefaceP The Lord be with you.C And also with you.P Lift up your hearts.C We lift them to the Lord.P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.C It is right to give Him thanks and praise.P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all

times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. Grant us Your Spirit, gracious Father, that we may give heed to the testament of Your Son in true faith and, above all, firmly take to heart the words with which Christ gives to us His body and blood for our forgiveness. By Your grace, lead us to remember and give thanks for the boundless love which He manifested to us when, by pouring out His precious blood, He saved us from Your righteous wrath and from sin, death, and hell. Grant that we may receive the bread and wine, that is, His body and blood, as a gift, guarantee, and pledge of His salvation. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

556 Dear Christians, One and All, Rejoice1 Dear Christians, one and all, rejoice,

With exultation springing,And with united heart and voice    And holy rapture singing,Proclaim the wonders God has done,How His right arm the vict’ry won.    What price our ransom cost Him!

2 Fast bound in Satan’s chains I lay;    Death brooded darkly o’er me.Sin was my torment night and day;    In sin my mother bore me.But daily deeper still I fell;My life became a living hell,    So firmly sin possessed me.

3 My own good works all came to naught,    No grace or merit gaining;Free will against God’s judgment fought,    Dead to all good remaining. My fears increased till sheer despairLeft only death to be my share;    The pangs of hell I suffered.

4 But God had seen my wretched state    Before the world’s foundation,And mindful of His mercies great,    He planned for my salvation. He turned to me a father’s heart; He did not choose the easy part    But gave His dearest treasure.

5 God said to His belovèd Son:    “It’s time to have compassion. Then go, bright jewel of My crown,    And bring to all salvation. From sin and sorrow set them free;Slay bitter death for them that they    May live with You forever.”

6 The Son obeyed His Father’s will,    Was born of virgin mother; And God’s good pleasure to fulfill,    He came to be my brother. His royal pow’r disguised He bore;A servant’s form, like mine, He wore    To lead the devil captive.

7 To me He said: “Stay close to Me,    I am your rock and castle.Your ransom I Myself will be;    For you I strive and wrestle. For I am yours, and you are Mine,And where I am you may remain;    The foe shall not divide us.

8 “Though he will shed My precious blood,    Me of My life bereaving,All this I suffer for your good;    Be steadfast and believing.Life will from death the vict’ry win;My innocence shall bear your sin,    And you are blest forever.

9 “Now to My Father I depart,    From earth to heav’n ascending,And, heav’nly wisdom to impart,    The Holy Spirit sending; In trouble He will comfort youAnd teach you always to be true    And into truth shall guide you.

10“What I on earth have done and taught    Guide all your life and teaching; So shall the kingdom’s work be wrought    And honored in your preaching. But watch lest foes with base alloyThe heav’nly treasure should destroy;    This final word I leave you.”

685 Let Us Ever Walk with Jesus1 Let us ever walk with Jesus,

Follow His example pure,Through a world that would deceive us    And to sin our spirits lure.Onward in His footsteps treading,    Pilgrims here, our home above,    Full of faith and hope and love,Let us do the Father’s bidding.    Faithful Lord, with me abide;    I shall follow where You guide.

2 Let us suffer here with Jesus    And with patience bear our cross.Joy will follow all our sadness;

Where He is, there is no loss.Though today we sow no laughter,    We shall reap celestial joy;    All discomforts that annoyShall give way to mirth hereafter.    Jesus, here I share Your woe;    Help me there Your joy to know.

3 Let us gladly die with Jesus.    Since by death He conquered death,He will free us from destruction,    Give to us immortal breath.Let us mortify all passion    That would lead us into sin;    And the grave that shuts us inShall but prove the gate to heaven.    Jesus, here with You I die,    There to live with You on high.

4 Let us also live with Jesus.    He has risen from the deadThat to life we may awaken.    Jesus, You are now our head.We are Your own living members;    Where You live, there we shall be    In Your presence constantly,Living there with You forever.    Jesus, let me faithful be,    Life eternal grant to me.

P Brothers and sisters in Christ, when we next gather for worship, it will be Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. On that day we will begin our solemn journey to the Savior’s cross. While the joy of faith remains undiminished throughout the year, our rejoicing during Lent is muted and quiet. For centuries, therefore, the Christian churches have omitted their most jubilant songs during this season, including the word “Alleluia,” which means, “Praise the Lord.”Now for a time we say farewell to Alleluia. We do this to prepare ourselves for the quieter days of Lent. The Alleluias will return on Easter dawn, as we gather to shout our praise to the risen Lord.
