Happy New Year!by: Peter Ohlweiler, President

Greetings to all of our Green Mountain Chapter Members. It is hard to believe that we are now into the 19th year of the 21st century - but we are. As we enter yet another new year we are faced with chal-lenges of how to come up with new ideas for entertaining our club members with events, drives and cruise-ins. Once again, I would like to ask our members to send the Board your idea for something you would like the club members to participate in; be it a Saturday or Sunday drive through the Green Mountains or the White; maybe in the Adirondacks or maybe meet at a local cruise-in, then go for a ride afterwards; a drive to a winery, brewery with lunch during the stop. Whatever you might think of please submit your ideas to the Board at [email protected] and we will get the word out to all our members.

We want to make 2019 our best year yet. As of right now it has been decided that OktoberFAST will be held on the 6th and 7th of September at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe. This will be our second year at the Trapp Family Lodge and they are very excited to have us back.

(At press time, this information was nolon-ger accurate. See comment at bottom of this page. -ed.)

Let’s make this German Car Show one to remember.

Speaking of remembering, I would like to express the Green Mountain Chapter’s condolences and deepest sympathy to the Holzscheiter family for the sudden and unexpected loss of their son AJ, this past 30th day of November. On the 6th of De-cember, Pam and Stew Loeb and I attend-ed the celebration of AJ’s life at the Collins - Perry Sports Complex in St. Albans, VT. (AJ’s father John is an intricate part of the Green Mountain Chapter BMWCCA, as he is primarily responsible for organizing the startup of the Chapter and we are so grateful to him for the foresight on such an endeavor.) When I arrived at the sports complex around 10:30 Thursday morn-ing I was astounded to see the number

of vehicles parked around the complex. I had only met AJ a couple of times but, I was totally impressed by his maturity and politeness. I could sense right away that this was a very caring individual. While walking inside the complex, it was appar-ent to me right away that this young man had touched hundreds, if not thousands, of lives during his short lifetime. A real tragedy to lose such a special young man. AJ’s uncle from California, was first to stand and speak of his special days and moments spent with AJ, -be it out hunt-ing, fishing, skiing or at family picnics. It was heartbreaking, yet inspiring, to hear the love and lessons he himself learned from AJ that he would no longer be able to enjoy in real time, but in memories only. As others spoke (his grandfather, brother, friends, stepfather, and the proudest one of all, his dad John) I too learned valuable lessons of reminding myself that when a friend or family member needs a hug to be sure to embrace them and reassure them that everything will be okay. When a team-mate needs some encouragement or just a moment to talk, take a moment and be there for them. We sometimes forget how the little things in life become the most important at times. A simple, “I love you.” or a, “Can I give you a hand?” and that hug when needed. It seems that all those who spoke of AJ all remember when they need-ed a hug or some words of encouragement and it was apparent, they all had one thing in common here. AJ was their guy to be there for them when they were in need. Such a wonderful, heartfelt young man who touch so many lives so many times, will be sorely missed yet never forgotten. When a person of this caliber touches your life, just the thought of them will give you the strength to get through those mo-ments. Thank you, John H., for introducing me to your son, such a special person, and allowing me to celebrate his life with you and your family and about 1,000 other friends who obviously loved him so much. God bless and remember to always “Keep the faith”.

Run-Flats or Not Run-Flatsby: Walter McNally, Treasurer

Now that winter is truly upon us, the E21 320 and the “Purple Truck” are tucked in the garage for a long winter’s nap, their batteries hooked to a tender with care. Winter also means I’ve had the chance to drive the E90 328xi I purchased a few months ago. How this vehicle came to grace my driveway is an interesting story.

It was time to really start searching for a winter vehicle. I had been on the lookout for a while but it was much more of a ca-sual thing, scanning a few web sites but nothing concrete. I didn’t think I was be-ing too picky, just wanted something that would reliably get me through the winter and not leave me stranded in the middle of the night.

I was dreading the whole process as noth-ing I saw, fit the bill; they were either too far away or too expensive. I also had no interest in traipsing through dealer lots, as I did not have the time or the desire to be subjected to sales pitches. Somehow the universe heard me, because I walked out of work one day, and parked almost next to my car, was a very nice E90 328xi with a large For Sale sign in the back window. It did seem to meet all the criteria for a winter car. After a little bit of negotiation, I bought it. Four little-used snow tires on steel wheels were part of the package, which was a nice bonus.

It did come with run-flats. I had never used run-flats before and was not overly excited about them, but all the tires were relatively new so I wasn’t going to toss them out. I read many stories and posts about run-

flats and my opinion was based on what I had read, not from my own experience. The primary complaints seemed to be a harsh, stiff ride and the price of replacement tires.

The ride was indeed very stiff and harsh. It seemed like every little bump in the road was transmitted straight to the steering wheel. More effort was required to turn; in fact, I thought I was muscling racing slicks through a corner. On top of all that, there seemed to be a great deal of rolling resistance.

So, what’s the big deal I thought? The ride may be harsh but if you get a flat you can at least drive someplace to get a repair or replacement. Well, not so fast. Tire manu-facturers require dealers receive special-ized training and pass certification tests to repair run-flats; they may also require the purchase of specialized equipment. There are also very strict restrictions as to how far a run-flat can be driven in a low-pres-sure situation and similarly strict inspec-tion requirements to determine if the tire can be safely repaired.

The vast majority of run-flats have rein-forced sidewalls which allow them to main-tain their shape in a low-pressure situation. Anything that results in a sidewall failure requires a tow to bring the car to a repair facility. The vehicle is not drivable with a sidewall failure. In pot-hole-infested New England I’m thinking a sidewall failure is more the rule, than the exception.

According to Edmunds, run-flat tire us-age has tripled in the past decade but has

leveled off at about 12%. So, they are still a relatively small portion of the market. A run-flat tire in a small town or really out in the boonies may require a detour or an unplanned overnight stay waiting for a tire to be delivered. A 2013 J.D. Powers study found that drivers replaced run-flats, on average, 6,000 miles sooner than drivers using conventional tires. The theory is softer compounds are used to offset the harsh ride. Replacement tires are no bar-gain either, based on my own unscientific comparison, a person can expect to pay somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 more per tire.

So, run-flats maybe a good thing in a big city where people throw nails on the ground for fun, but I’m thinking not so much in rural New England. So why do BMWs come with run-flat tires? A BMW product manager was quoted as saying that run-flats are a good fit for the BMW experience and that changing a tire is not a premium experience. I don’t know anyone that thinks changing a flat is a great thing, but run-flats are not the “be all and end all”. Understand the pros and cons of both types of tires, read the reviews and make an informed decision.

What will I do? Keep the run-flats until they wear out and buy non- run-flat re-placements at that point. I will also invest in a can or two of puncture sealant or a tire sealant kit. That will at least get me to a facility that can actually repair or replace my tire.

Social Events 2019 and beyond!By: David Harrison, SEC Chair

New Year... New Members... New Ideas!!! All are welcomed by your White Mountain Chapter!

The Social Events Committee is looking for volunteers to join in the planning or orga-nizing of future events. There is no com-mitment other than your desired individual input via email or in person at scheduled meetings. The latter offers you a chance to socialize with other BMW fans face-to-face over a tasty dinner. We even pick up the tab!

Tell the SEC what you think would make the club more fun. Previous events have ranged from “Covered Bridges” driving tours, to chili cook-offs, to behind the scenes views of local tracks, maple sugaring, private car collections, breweries, museums, diners and more. Any suggestion is worthy of consideration. Our best new ideas in the past were originally some-thing “pulled out of the box”.

So tell us, what’s in your “idea box”?

Take time to regularly check the chapter schedule for meetings or events in 2019.

You can also contact any SEC member for a quick response. Either way your club is ready for you to make us better by just be-ing involved.

2018 Driving Event Wrap UpText: Bruce Bergeron, Driving Event Committee | Photos: Paul Michali, WMC Photographer (action shots), Club Motorsports (aerial shots)

Each year the White Mountain Chapter wraps up its offical driving season with a “One-Two Punch”; an Advanced Driving Safety School (ADSS), immediately fol-lowed by the legendary Fall Foliage Spec-tacular Track Event (HPDE), and I am here to report – 2018 went out with a huge BANG! Both events were full to the gills, and fun was had by all.

On October 6th, we hosted our second ADSS event of the year at the fantastic New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loud-on. 28 eager drivers and 17 knowledgeable volunteer instructors arrived at 7:30 am and spent the next eight hours learning, laughing and enjoying the comradery these wonderful events afford. It is always a delight to welcome drivers and vehicles of every type and see the amazing skill improvements that each student demon-

strates during the various exercises they perform.

The above photo shows one of the stu-dents as she prepares to attack the autocross course at the end of day. The excitement, focus and confidence in her eyes brings joy to every instructor and is affirmation of why they keep coming back. Anyone who has attended an ADSS event is probably smiling as they reflect on their own experience dashing around the tight and twisty autocross course, tires squeal-ing, brakes glowing, laughter and smiles everywhere. We cannot wait for our next ADSS event on April 6, 2019.

Look at these spectacular aerial views! Can you believe this amazing venue is here, in New Hampshire? - Yes! Right in our back yard! Thank you Club Motor-

sports, and thank you everyone, who per-sisted and made the track a reality.

The White Mountain and Boston Chap-ters combined forces to host the 2018 Fall Spectacular track event, at Club Motorsports on October 12th and 13th. This two-day event was one for the record books with 99 students and 67 instructors

participating. The reputation of our event and the venue drew folks from far and wide, including almost two dozen from Quebec. As you can image, an event this large took a ton of work from many vol-unteers, it is truly remarkable to think of how many people donate their time and energy to help make our events run safely and smoothly.

The weather during the 2018 event at Club Motorsports brought a little of ev-erything, which in the end provided the best opportunity to explore and refine a greater number of driving skills. Feed-back from students and instructors was overwhelmingly positive, and everyone begged for more events at Club Motor-sports in 2019. Your wish is our com-mand; Club Motorsports will host two events in 2019: Summer Sizzling Heat on July 8th, and the Fall Foliage Spectacular October 11th & 12th.

The rain did little to diminish the thrills experienced during the amazing Fall Foliage Spectacular event at Club Motorsports.

“Tune the Driver - Tune the Car” Seminar Presented by Ross Bentley and Matt RomanowskiBy: Elizabeth Hummel, WMC Chief Classroom Instructor

“Can you seat 40? ...How about 55? ...Is 60 possible?”, questions Bruce Bergeron emailed me almost immedi-ately after registration for the seminar opened, with interest FAR surpassing our initial expectations.

In the end, the White Mountain Chapter BMW CCA hosted almost 80 like-minded track junkies for the inaugural, perfor-mance-focused, “Tune the Driver, Tune the Car” off-season event. This first of its kind event for WMC took place December 9th in Manchester, and was graciously hosted by Jeff Baker and Elizabeth Hum-mel at their Image 4 facility.

During the morning session, internation-ally known, and legendary coach, Ross Bentley walked the group through his vi-sualization techniques, sensory input and performance focused mental exercises to tune the driver for performance.

To transition into the “Tune the Car” por-tion of the day, Matt Romanowski from TrailBrake.net gave a very popular lunch time run-through about “Living and Learning from your AiM Data”. Matt gave

us tools for collecting and reading the data, as well as suggestions on relevant data points for gathering information on both driver and car behavior.

Ross’ afternoon session shared tips and techniques for evaluating track car and driver setup. We learned methods to help us isolate and evaluate changes as we modify our setup and driv-ing for greater speed and precision.

In combination with Matt’s session, we left with new focus for preparing the car and the driver for optimal performance. The full day event gave us plenty of food for thought and kept at least our mental engines rev’ing during New England’s cold track winter season. Member feed-back was great and we look forward to hosting future events on data and driver performance in the future!

All driving enthusiasts are encouraged to sign up to receive Ross’ weekly newsletter that is chalk full of professional quality information that is entertaining and enlightening. Register for the electronic weekly email at: speedsecrets.com

Here We AreBy: Tom Giffen, Membership Chair

Here we are – the holidays are over, a few of our cars may be put away, and plans are being made for the warm weather that is sure to come. While we wait, there are many things that may occupy us. We may be doing projects on our track cars or summer driving cars, we may be running our other cars through the car wash, but we can always count on something inter-esting going on with the club.

Check the website for dates and new event announcements, and you’ll see what I mean! There are already driving events on the calendar for 2019. The Annual Winter Reunion has already been scheduled for February 9th, and by the time you read this, the Parker’s Maple Barn Breakfast will surely have been too.

In the meantime, there is a raffle to benefit the BMW CCA Foundation that I would like to bring to your attention. Now

through Saturday, February 9th, we’re raf-fling off two very special books to benefit the Foundation – “Heroes of Bavaria” and “ICON – 50 Years of the 2002”. Each book is a limited edition (1 of 300) hardcover record of the official exhibition.

Concord Motorsports - Gone but Certainly Not ForgottenBy: Erik Wensberg

I first met Mike Cooney in Plymouth, New Hampshire back in 1975 or ’76, as a young student at a local prep school. While cruising around the downtown one afternoon, I saw the familiar nose of an early 60s Austin Healy sticking out of a small garage behind Main Street, and walked in to take a closer look. My Dad had owned a Healy 3000 Mk II when I was young, and we had a ball in the car. The business name back then was known as “The Metric System” and I thought it sounded like good fun. When he saw me, Mike looked up from the engine bay of an-other car and quickly introduced himself, and we have been friends ever since.

Mike and his erstwhile partner Mary moved the business to the Concord area in 1987, doing business as Concord Mo-torsport. In the early 90s, expansion pres-sures necessitated yet another move from their modest Water Street location, to a significantly larger two building complex along Route 4 in Chichester, New Hamp-shire which featured modern garages, and a full display space for car sales. Working with sons Tom and Nick, the business quickly became a “go to mecca” for BMW enthusiasts all over New Hampshire, and was appointed an authorized Bosch Re-pair Facility, as well as a an official Dinan Dealer quickly thereafter.

In fact, for as long as many of us “old timers” can recall, Mike and Concord Motorsport have been at the forefront of BMW CCA activities and enthusiasm in the region. A long time SCCA racer in his 100/4 Healy in F Production, Mike was also an avid supporter of the CCA’s early Club Racing efforts, even allowing yours truly to get my Club Race License in his red 2002 SSB GT1 car when I moved to the Granite State full time in 1998.

But it did not stop there, countless Chap-ter Open Houses, Tech Seminars, Open Garage days for visiting Vintage Tours and Rallyes and the like; Concord Motor-sport became one of the most prominent sponsors of the White Mountain Chapter since its formation, breaking away from the Boston Chapter back in 1990. As past President Dick Holden fondly recalls, “It is true, Mike was an avid instructor for both the Boston and White Mountain Chapters,

and was also one of our very early spon-sors of most all of our enthusiast events”.

Past Chapter President, Dan Giuliano concurs, “Mike was always there for us, whether it was helping organize our first Street Survival program for teens with the CCA Foundation, or perhaps more importantly, introducing our Driving Events committee to a young Ed Valpey, and ex Skip Barber instructor and BMW enthusiast who helped us institute a cutting edge Advanced Skills training curriculum for novice students, and then also a more advanced Instructor Train-ing methodology for our chapter that, in many respects, became models for CCA

National to later emulate”.

Always a firm supporter of the BMW CCA, CMS was a mainstay of the White Moun-tain Chapter track events, and was also an advertiser for many, many years in the chapter newsletter. Perhaps not surpris-ingly, a significant number of Boston and WMC Chapter members, including myself, bought BMWs and also had them serviced at Concord Motorsport through the years.

Particularly fond memories of my own are the 2004, 2005 Chapter expeditions we shared running the Mount Washing-ton Hill Climb in combination with the vintage crowd of the VSCCA. We ran all sorts of cars, from E-30 M3s and beyond, and had an absolute blast. As most of our group were doing their first or maybe second hillclimb experience, it was some-what surprising we pulled it off without a single incident, while posting some pretty respectable times!

But 2018 was the last year for Concord Motorsport, as Mike and Mary have finally decided to smell the roses and retire in order to enjoy travelling and family. So, it is now our duty, to please raise a glass this post- holiday season, as we fondly cel-ebrate the true meaning of our club, and the mighty contribution made by Mike and Mary Cooney, and the entire team at Concord Motorsport! As there is very little doubt, everyone in the White Mountain Chapter owes them a true debt of grati-tude!

Concord Motorsport; gone, but certainly not forgotten!

50 Years of 2002 to 50 Years of the BMW CCAby: Andrew Wilson, President

2018 was quite a banner year for the 2002 celebrating 50 years. In prepara-tion for the year, I had Vern restored to his former glory, which was completed April 17th 2018. Over the year we logged 18,099 miles, traveling to the Mid America ‘02Fest in Eureka Springs, Arkansas; BMW CCA Oktoberfest in Pittsburgh, Pennsylva-nia; BMW CCA Day at the Larz Anderson Museum in Boston; The Rivertown Gear Buster’s Fall Kentucky Ridge Run; the ‘02 Group Tour in Dobson, North Carolina; and last but not least, a BMW Classic CCA Lowcountry Discovery Tour to Savannah, Georgia which culminated at the Hilton Head Concours d’Elegance.

The BMW CCA Foundation hosted The ICON exhibit, featuring rare and famous 2002s, from Cabriolet to Targa to Turbo to highly modified race cars and everything in between. The exhibit ran from May 18th, 2018, to January 19th, 2019. As of this writing, I am attending the closing week-end, January 18th & 19th.

Along the way, Vern and I won our 3rd Iron Butt at the Mid-America ‘02Fest in Arkansas, 2nd in Classic Super Clean at Oktoberfest in Pittsburgh, and 1st place in Vintage Super Clean at BMW CCA Day at Larz Anderson in Boston.

Now Vern is back in the shop for the 2018-2019 winter for some minor cosmetic work, new seat pads and new carpet.

2019 promises to be another banner year, as the BMW CCA celebrates its 50th An-niversary. The BMW CCA Foundation Mu-seum exhibit will center around the CCA’s history from the early years in the Boston area, to the 50th year at the current home of the CCA near Greenville, South Car-olina. Oktoberfest 2019 with be held in Greenville & Greer South Carolina from October 13th to 19th.
