September Deacons The Week of:

September 4th Richard Russelburg & Shane Eans

September 11th Bob Smith & Jason Link

September 18th David Rice & Darrell Gillispie

September 25th James Nichols

The boss of a big company needed to call one of

his employees about an urgent problem with one of the

main computers. He dialed the employee’s home

telephone number and was greeted with a child’s

whispered, "Hello?"

Feeling put out at the inconvenience of having to

talk to a youngster, the boss asked, "Is your Daddy

home?" "Yes," whispered the small voice. "May I talk

with him?" the man asked. To the surprise of the boss, the

small voice whispered, "No."

Wanting to talk with an adult, the boss asked, "Is

your Mommy there?" "Yes," came the answer. "May I talk

with her?" Again, the small voice whispered, "No."

Knowing that it was not likely that a young child

would be left home alone, the boss decided he would just

leave a message with the person who should be there

watching over the child. "Is there anyone there besides

you?" the boss asked the child. "Yes," whispered the child,

"a policeman."

Wondering what a cop would be doing at his

employee’s home, the boss asked, "May I speak with the

policeman?" "No, he is busy," whispered the child. "Busy

doing what?" asked the boss. "Talking to Daddy and

Mommy and the Fireman," came the whispered answer.

"What is going on there?" asked the boss, now

alarmed. In an awed whispering voice, the child

answered, "The search team just landed the hello-copper!"

Alarmed, concerned and more than just a little frustrated,

the boss asked, "Why are they there?" Still whispering,

the young voice replied (along with a muffled giggle),

"They are looking for me!"

In his book The No-Guilt Guide for Witnessing,

George Sweeting tells of a man by the name of John

Currier who in 1949 was found guilty of murder and

sentenced to life in prison. Later he was transferred and

paroled to work on a farm near Nashville, TN.

In 1968, Currier’s sentence was terminated and a

letter bearing the good news was sent to him. But John

never saw the letter, nor was he told anything about it.

Life on that farm was hard and without promise for the

future. Yet John kept doing what he was told even after

the farmer for whom he worked had died.

Ten years went by. Then a state parole officer

learned about Currier’s plight, found him, and told him

that his sentence had been terminated. He was a free man.

Sweeting concluded that story by asking, “Would

it matter to you if someone sent you an important

message—the most important in your life—and year after

year the urgent message was never delivered?”

We who have heard the good news and

experienced freedom through Christ are responsible to

proclaim it to others still enslaved by sin. Are we doing all

we can to make sure that people get the message? We

must diligently search for those who are outside Christ,

just like those who would go to great lengths to find a

missing child!

The Great Commandment teaches us to "Love the

LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul,

with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the

first commandment. And the second like it is this: You

shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other

commandment greater than these."(Mark 12:30-31)
