Grand Knight’s Message

Brothers, Families, and Friends of Council 367,

The Admissions Degree in the Knights of Columbus

is like a Sacrament in the Church. Although technically not

the same and certainly not sanctioned as such, a candidate's

completion of the Admissions Degree should be thought of as

having as much import on his spiritual and religious

development as does the conferring of one of the Sacraments

in the Catholic Church itself. I believe it's critically important

to think of it that way. Doing so puts the proper perspective

on everything we stand for and should be doing as Knights.

One of the characteristics of a sacrament that is

celebrated in the Catholic Church is that it is a visible rite.

That means that the sacrament is conducted in public in front

of the parishioners. Another characteristic is that a sacrament

is conferred by the priest who has been divinely vested with

the authority to do so. Only he can confer the sacrament upon

the uninitiated.

Knight of the Month

The Knight of the Month is a Brother that

exemplifies the passion for a program that we all need to have.

He has single handedly directed the Council's life programs

this fraternal year. He spearheaded the 40 Days for Life

Prayer Vigil initiative and led us on our first ever abortion

clinic protest. His inspirational leadership was key to

amassing the most Knights for a prayer vigil that the Council

has ever had. He recently represented the Council at a regional

right to life conference. He is also leading the planning effort

for the national Match for Life.

As a parish Round Table Coordinator, he led a

highly successful religious education breakfast event that

yielded several prospects for the Council. Finally, this Knight

has stepped up to accept a leadership position in the Fourth

Degree. He is an outstanding example of a Knight.

Congratulations to Peter Laurin on his selection as the

October Knight of the Month.

Vivat Jesus,

Dan

Grand Knight’s Message, from Page 1

Finally, the completion of a sacrament typically

involves some sort of verbal or physical affirmation from the

conferee. All of those factors make a sacrament a mystical

channel of divine grace. The receiver of the sacrament is

forever changed at the completion of the ceremony. A very

similar thing takes place in the Knights of Columbus during

an Admissions Degree. Think about our ceremonials.

Every sacrament involves visible and invisible

realities. The invisible part of it is God's gift to redeem us

through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ via the Holy

Spirit. It is because of this divine grace that we get directly

from God that we derive the commission that we have spoken

about previously. Because of that commission, we are

empowered and even required to act on behalf of God. It is a

powerful concept. But without the visible part, it is

meaningless.

The visible part of the sacrament is all about the

conferee. More correctly, it is about action as manifested in

our lives on a daily basis. Our response to the invisible gift of

God's grace through the conferring of the sacrament is how

we are measured individually as Knights and as a group in the

Council. Because God is sharing his holiness with us through

the sacrament, we must also share it with others. We do that

through our foremost principle: charity.

Most sacraments are received only once. Others are

not. Those that are not, require ongoing action and active

participation by the conferee in order to foster actual living of

the faith. As Saint Matthew so famously said: Faith without

action is dead. The conferring of a sacrament is designed to

spiritually nourish the celebrant such that he is imbued with

the Holy Spirit to an extraordinary extent that he will want to

show his love of God by helping others through action. Doing

anything less is essentially ignoring the will of God.

The beauty of the Knights of Columbus is that

through the "sacrament" of the Admissions Degree, a Brother

has the ability to put his faith into action immediately and

constantly. He is able to prove his holiness and make the

world holier. It is a self-fulfilling prophecy. By

demonstrating holiness through acts of charity coupled with

humility, a Knight will surely reap the benefit of receiving the

grace of God and thus growing his faith. Demonstrating

charity, giving worship to God, and building up the body of

Christ will cause you to grow your faith. That is concept is

implicit in our mission statement. It doesn't get much better.

As good Catholic gentlemen, each of us Knights

must demonstrate our faith in our daily lives. Our various and

numerous programs, fundraising efforts, and works of charity

enable us to easily exemplify the fulfillment of the sacrament

that has been bestowed on us during the Admissions

Degree. However, it is up to each of us to make it happen. I

would encourage all of you to get involved in Council

activities so that you can fulfill God's will for you. Remember:

Active Knights Stay Knights. The corollary is this: Active

Knights are more faith filled Knights. Let that be you.

Vivat Jesus,

Dan Doyle

Family of the Month

Our Family of the Month is from Sacred Heart

Church. He was instrumental in forming “That Man Is You”

men's group five years ago. Each Saturday morning about 30

men meet for breakfast, to watch a video presentation, and

then discuss ways to be better men of God. He has steadfastly

shepherded the men as they learn ways to be better leaders,

husbands, and fathers for their families. He has also been a

youth leader and chaperone for the past two National Catholic

Youth Conferences (NCYC). He is a confirmation sponsor

for parish youth and has been a member of the 125th

Anniversary Committee that organized events for the parish's

celebrations this past year.

His wife will be a chaperone for the 2019 NCYC.

She also prepares the weekly sides for the TV in the

commons. Their daughter has attended NCYC and is a youth

council leader. Their son has also attended sessions for

confirmation and assists with the soup kitchen at the

parish. This family serves as a great model of servant

leadership and involvement for our parish. Congratulations

to Kevin, Kelly, Ashby & Seth Larkin as the October

Family of the Month!

Columbus Club Report

Brothers, Families, and Friends,

Save the Date:

Saturday November 16, 2019, is our annual Council

367/ Columbus Club work day, at our Council home. Mark

your calendars and plan to join us for our annual fall cleanup

starting at 0800.

We will need to scrape and paint the exterior stairs in

the back; install a new ceiling light in the CC office. We will

also be planting bushes to replace those that died this summer

in the front of the building. The Sherriff’s work team will be

there again this year to help clean up the leaves and grounds.

Booze Lockers:

As some of you know, we rent lockers to members for

the storage of member’s liquor bottles, for their personal use in

the lounge. We are updating our inventory confirming usage of

individual lockers. We can’t identify the users of the

following lockers. A-11; A-18; A-23;A-26;A-30; B-5;B-

6;B-10;B-18;B-19;B-20;B-22;B-24;B-25;B-26B-30

If you have the key and are still using these lockers

please contact me or PGK John Person so we can update the

records or empty out abandoned lockers.

Maintenance and Improvement Work.

Unfortunately, after trying minimal repairs, we

eventually had to replace the A/C unit is the lounge. We also

had to fix a leak in the sink in the Past Grand Knights Bar. We

are tracking other leaks to cut water waste.

There is a list posted in the Lounge of other pending

work items. We need someone to help with a few electrical

installations and maintenance items. If you have some skills in

this area we could use some help installing lights and moving

a ceiling fan. A list of needed maintenance items is posted on

the closet door in the Lounge. If you can help, please contact

me or House Committee Members: Squad or Napoleon.

Mortgage.

We paid off our mortgage this month. We are forever

grateful for the help of Brother Sir Knight Rich Mozelewski

who was instrumental in obtaining and guaranteeing this loan

for us. He contributed many things to Council 367 and the CC

over the years. We are deeply saddened by his recent death. He

will be missed.

Thank you to all of you that contribute time treasure

and talent to help us keep the Council 367 home operating and

maintained.
