This 1989 cast of Grease reprise their roles 27 years later

fannie sunshine [email protected]

They’ve kept their promise to always be together – even 27 years later.

The original Danny, Sandy, Pink Ladies and T-Birds from York Mills Collegiate Institute’s 1989 production of Grease will be hand jiving and singing the blues about young love when they reprise their roles for two charity shows in May.

The ball got rolling when someone on Facebook posted the front page of The North York Mirror from Wednesday, April 5, 1989, which featured a picture of several Grease cast members.

After reminiscing about the fun they had during their Grease days, Lori Pearlstein, who played flirt Marty Maraschino, asked if anyone was willing to resurrect their roles almost 30 years later.

“Ninety-eight per cent of the cast said yes,” she said. “I was a little surprised, but not so much. I was more excited.”

The cast has been rehearsing since January under co-direc-tors Pearlstein and original director Corey Mandell, who is CEO and founder of Corey

Mandell Entertainment Group and owner/director of Camp Timberlane.

Pearlstein, a New York trained actor, teacher, cast-ing director and founder of coaching and improv com-pany Playworks, recalls York Mills’ production of Grease wasn’t your typical high school musical.

“I remember it being a big deal,” said Pearlstein, who was in Grade 10 at the time and will not only co-direct the revised production, but produce and star as Marty as well. “I was a professional actor at the time and we had a ridiculously talented cast. Everyone was perfect for their role.”

So good, in fact, the cast was asked to perform several charity shows for the Reena Foundation, an organization assisting individuals with developmental disability.

“It’s a lot of work, but I’m excited,” she said of the upcoming performances. “I really feel like everyone has put in such hard work and it’s going to be great.”

Michael Lende, who was front and centre in The Mirror’s photo in 1989, called the repri-sal “pretty unbelievable.”

“You know in high school,

you have those moments where you say wouldn’t it be great if we had a time machine to go back? This is one of the coolest, fun things I’ve ever been part of,” said Lende, who is dusting off the leather jacket for another run of T-Birds leader Danny Zuko. “I hadn’t seen a lot of (the cast) in 20 some-odd years, and the cool thing was everyone looked the same. We just assembled like no time had passed. We’re not getting paid, we’re doing this for charity, and everyone is taking it seriously.”

Doing the high school production of Grease was the brainchild of Lende and Mandell, who were originally

going to co-direct. “We casted all the Pink

Ladies and most of the guys,” he said. “I turned to Corey and in my best John Travolta impersonation, said we haven’t found Danny yet. Corey said I should be Danny, but to make it fair I had to audition.”

Needless to say, the 18-year-old Grade 13 student got the part.

Now, at age 45, Lende said he’s bringing new perspective to the role.

“The way I’m approach-ing the character is like he’s my younger brother and I’m putting my arm around him,” he said. “At 45 you have a lot more life experiences than you

did at 18. When Sandy gets mad at Danny, you can really see the hurt in his eyes.”

Without giving away any secrets, Lende said the script has been tweaked to make it more time appropriate for the cast members’ ages, along with some audio-visual dif-ferences.

A longtime North York resident, Lende performed with The Second City in the 1990s and founded the Hockey Academy of Toronto, along with co-founding Capitol Event Theatre before head-ing up Zipcar Toronto.

“I want to thank Lori for organizing and Corey for doing such a great production for

us,” he said.Proceeds from the shows

will benefit Forever Chai Foundation, an organiza-tion that raises funds for the Shabtai Levi Home in Haifa, Israel.

The Shabtai Levi Home is a non-denominational home providing a range of emer-gency/residential care services for physically and emotionally abused children.

Grease will take to the stage Saturday, May 7 at St. Michael’s Theatre, 1515 Bathurst St., at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Left, a 1989 front cover of The North York Mirror featuring the Grease cast at York Mils Collegiate Institute; Right, members of the cast from that 1989 production of ‘Grease’ , includes ‘Pink Ladies’ Joanna Pearl, left, Lori Pearlstein, Amanda Martinez, Stacey Tessis and Miriam Elmaleh.

For the fourth year in a row, York Mills Collegiate Institute students are spreading kind-ness during a special week dedicated to the cause.

Organized by the York Mills Road and Leslie Street school’s Grade 12 business manage-ment and leadership funda-mentals students, Kindness Week raises awareness about mental health and the power of spreading goodwill.

Running May 2 to 6, events will include Teacher Appreciation Day, Hooping it Up with Best Buddies, a school barbecue and the main event YM Talks, where speakers of

various backgrounds, includ-ing TED Talk speaker Drew Dudley, will share stories with the student body.

Students are also spread-ing the word to elementary through to high schools in the hopes they establish their own versions of Kindness Week.

“We are going in groups of two to schools to explain what we do and to tailor the initiative to their school,” said York Mills business student Tania Kengatharan. “I know my peers have suffered from anxiety and depression and we are trying to incorporate acts of kindness in daily life. Even small things, like holding a door, we are trying to make people more conscious of.”

The first Project Kindness initiative in 2013 came to light following the release of the 2011 student census by the TDSB that noted 66 per cent of students in grades 9 to 12 said they felt stressed sometimes or all the time. In an attempt to lower the numbers, the busi-ness management students decided to focus their project on the promotion and aware-ness of kindness.

Kengatharan said she didn’t pay much attention to Kindness Week as a younger high school student, but that changed last year when she participated in events.

“I’m really hoping students will be more aware of being kind in daily life,” she said.

Bloor bike lanes a correct path to improving safetyToronto councillors may feel they will have a

tough decision to make when they meet next week.

Absent any advice from the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee, councillors will have to decide whether to launch a pilot project on Bloor Street West to see whether a short stretch of that road can endure and maybe even benefit from a bikeway, separated from car and truck traffic.

Watching the strained debate that took place Monday at the committee, one might think the deci-sion would strain even the wisdom of King Solomon.

Bloor Street is a significant east-west artery, and removing the lanes from car traffic will cut automotive access in half. At the same time, climate change and a growing population dictate that we cannot continue to encour-age fossil-fuel-burning cars and

trucks in our downtown without offering safe alter-natives. Yes, it’s another battle of cars versus bikes.

We hope that when this comes to Toronto council, councillors will stand down from the battlements and take a rational look at this very rational plan to consider expanding our city’s cycling network.

The pilot project is just that – an experiment to see how Bloor Street and the surrounding neighbour-hoods would fare if the city were to install cycling infrastructure similar to the separated bike lanes on Sherbourne Street, and on Richmond and Adelaide streets. The separated lanes have worked out well there, in some cases tripling the number of cyclists using the routes.

That’s impressive enough. But there is another more immediate reason for trying separated lanes on Bloor.

As it stands, the street is dangerous for cyclists. Between 2008 and 2012, the stretch of road in ques-tion – between Shaw Street and Avenue Road – has had an average of 22 collisions a year. Most of those were dooring, followed by a motorist trying to pass a cyclist and a motorist driving into a cyclist out of on-street parking.

Separated bike lanes would reduce those types of accidents. It would make all Torontonians safer.

And that, in and of itself, is worth a look when it comes to this pilot project. Council only has one choice.

Our VieW

Move could prevent many accidents

Roots of Bombardier streetcar deal go back to 2009When Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) Chair Josh Colle and CEO Andy Byford stood up Monday to talk about Bombardier and the missing light rail vehicles, they didn’t want to dwell on the past.

On the one hand, it’s an odd subject to avoid – given the trouble the city is having with its elusive new streetcars is very much a consequence of past deci-sions.

On the other hand, the business of the day on Monday had nothing to do with repudiating past administrations, and every-thing to do with delivering Bombardier Transportation the most scathingly public single-star Yelp! review pos-sible.

Bombardier had it coming.

The Montreal-based company should have, by the schedule of delivery, provided a total of 73 new streetcars delivered to the TTC by the end of 2015.

Actually delivered in that

time? Fourteen. And as of today? Seventeen.

There were problems, mostly to do with a deci-sion by Bombardier to outsource production of some of the custom parts to Mexico. But Bombardier had assured the TTC that they were ironed out, and promised to have 54 deliv-ered by the end of 2016.

On Monday, Bombardier made it clear, via a new CEO, that if they work very hard they can guarantee that 13 additional vehicles will be delivered by the end of the year.

That means that the TTC will likely have to refurbish even more of its stock of older streetcars, adding to the $34.1 million it’s already spending to do so because of the earlier backlog.

Bombardier’s covering that much. But because of the contract that the city signed, it is only liable for

$51 million in costs due to delay. It is here, of course, that one is led straight to the past – specifically, to 2009, when former mayor David Miller convened a special council meeting during a long civic strike, to ink the $1.2 billion deal with Bombardier that would eventually go so very wrong.

Toronto paid a larger portion of the purchase price than it should have, as Ottawa turned down a request to pay for a third of the bill, and it came at the cost of deferring certain capital projects. It was a competitive bidding pro-cess, but an imperfect one, as the only serious compet-itor – the German-owned manufacturer Siemens – struggled with Canadian content requirements and effectively disqualified itself with an untenably high bid.

And Bombardier won the contract, with a require-ment for only 25 per cent Canadian content and as it turns out a sweetheart

of a contract. It’s hard to say what Miller’s city government might have done differently. Perhaps held out for more bidders? Enforced a larger Can-Con rule to keep production out of Mexico, or done away with it entirely and forgone funding that was dependent on it? Or just paid hundreds of millions more for the same number of streetcars to a foreign-owned company with a good record?

This, perhaps, is another reason why Byford and Colle aren’t too quick to blame the Miller regime for the decision. In the end, going with any of those options involved taking a chance on one of a range of options. And while it might not always turn out the case, in this case the least expensive, most tempting option was the worst bet.

“I wanted to make a film for the young people,” Myers, who resides in the Spadina Road and St. Clair Avenue area, said. “I wanted to try to inspire what a beautiful planet we’ve inherited and why it’s important to take care of it.”

Narrated by Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence, the 50-minute documentary offers spectacular footage of our planet from space, from bursts of thunderstorm flashes in Africa and South East Asia, to the disappearing rainforests in Brazil, to the orange-lit border separating India and Pakistan – not to mention shots of the Aurora Borealis, which sent chills through my body.

Made for under $10 mil-lion, A Beautiful Planet also gives a glimpse into what life is like inside the ISS, from how astronauts sleep and wash their hair, to the importance of keeping up

with physical exercise (they train two-and-a-half hours a day), and how excited they get when a bag of fresh fruit is delivered.

Though Myers had a laun-dry list of what shots she wanted, she encouraged the astronauts, who were essen-tially the filmmakers, to use their judgement when film-ing – and one surprise scene in particular caused much delight.

Astronaut and medi-cal doctor Kjell Lindgren is shown playing a rendition of Amazing Grace – on the bagpipes.

“I didn’t know that was going to happen,” Myers told me after the viewing.

She was also pleased the crew managed to get clear footage of New Zealand, something Myers, who is behind IMAX documentaries Hubble 3D, Space Station 3D, and Blue Planet, had been longing after for 25 years.

“It was always cloud cov-ered,” she said. “But one day,

It turns out Toronto did apply to a provincial pro-gram for bike funding after all.

Last week, Metroland Media Toronto reported the provincial government had handed out $10 mil-lion to 37 municipalities for cycling infrastructure, but nothing for Toronto. At the time it was unknown whether Toronto had applied for funding, which provides up to 50 per cent of the cost of a single proj-ect. This week, Toronto Cycling director Jacquelyn Hayward-Gulati confirmed $52,000 was sought to cover half the cost for an “Automatic Bike Counter Network to demonstrate the impact of the Toronto cycling network”.

wVEHICLE IN TUNNEL CAUSES 10-HOUR DELAY

Another wayward motor-ist has ended up in a TTC streetcar tunnel.

The incident took place early Sunday morning and the driver, in an SUV with Alberta plates, according to the TTC, entered the

Queens Quay tunnel lead-ing into Union Station, driv-ing for 600 metres before getting stuck.

The driver fled, and the vehicle was towed away. Service was restored about 10 hours after the incident.

wSTREETCAR DELAY TO impACT CHERRY ROUTE

Questions were raised as to what will happen with the new Cherry service now that Bombardier has con-firmed it can only deliver 13 more new streetcars this year. Set to debut in June, the 514 Cherry route is intended to relieve pressure from the beleaguered 504 King service on the western portions of King Street. The 514 is slated to serve King West from Cherry Street to Dufferin Street, using the new streetcars.

Even though only a maxi-mum of 30 new vehicles will be in service by the end of the year, that’s still

enough for some to operate on the 514 route, said TTC CEO Andy Byford.

wmETROLiNX TALKS OLD RiVERDALE EXpANSiON

An on-and-off public tran-sit meeting to discuss GO Transit’s expansion efforts in Old Riverdale is appar-ently on again.

The meeting to be hosted by Metrolinx was supposed to have taken place this week. But travel issues and Toronto-Danforth MPP Peter Tabuns getting stricken with the flu meant a second postponement.

Metrolinx has con-firmed a meeting date of Monday, May 2 at 7 p.m. The meeting location was still unknown as of press deadline. At the meeting, Metrolinx will discuss the work done thus far.

Contact Tabuns’ con-stituency office at 416-461-0223 for an update.

Goal of film to encourage people to protect planet

it was clear.”While the film will appeal

to the visual senses, it also aims to raise awareness of how fossil fuels and green house gas emissions are destroying Earth, and how we must take care not to wipe out

the only known planet in the galaxy that supports life.

“I didn’t want to berate people,” Myers said. “I wanted to inspire. I wanted to be optimistic.”

As for how Lawrence came onboard the project, Myers

said she wanted a female narrator and thought the 25 year old, who is a passionate supporter of planet Earth, would be perfect.

“I showed a rough cut of it to her agent first, and then screened the rough cut for

Jennifer,” Myers said. “She loved it. She said, ‘I’m in.’ I thought she did an absolutely splendid job.”

Friendship is always a sweet responsibility, never an oppor-tunity, wrote author Khalil Gibran.

And documentary film-maker David Bajurny has cap-tured the essense of this quote in his work, Sybil and Betts: Requiem for a Friendship, which will be part of The Caregiver Show Friday, May 6 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ontario Science Centre.

The documentary shares the story of two women, who have been friends for 50 years and continue to go on many adventures despite Betts’ Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

Bajurny said the topic of filming someone with Alzheimer’s was very “deli-cate” and he tried to be very aware not to be exploitive.

He added that filming was sometimes challenging because Sybil works at the speed of light and Betts is very quiet.

“She was aware at times what was going on. But the

degree the disease was pro-gressing to interview her was very challenging.”

Bajurny also juggled with the fact that those living with Alzheimer’s have good days and bad days.

“You can be having a per-fectly normal conversation and they may ask you some-thing you talked about five minutes ago. It can be jarring,” he said.

As a filmmaker, he adapted to these challenges by stay-ing true to the theme of the documentary: friendship.

“As long as we stayed true to Sybil being the best friend she can be to Betts and enrich her life and not focus so much on remembering on what hap-pened yesterday but enjoy-ing those moments together

– that seemed to be the most authentic,” Bajurny said.

The Caregiver Show is a resource day for family caregivers and more than 50 exhibitors are scheduled to attend.

The show will allow attend-ees to learn about various health topics, demonstrations from the participating orga-nizations and experts as well as the resources, services and products available for caregiv-ing needs.

Admission to the show is free. Parking at The Science Centre will be discounted to $5 for those attending the show.
