After successfully publishing the Coal and Quarry

Miner’s Exchange for over 25 years, we started The

Northeast ONG Marketplace with the same business

model – a direct mail publication to decision-makers in

the industry at no charge so that they could find the

businesses to could support their needs. That model has

proven to be successful in the oil and gas industry as

well. Since our first issue in October of 2011, we have

grown from a distribution of about 7,000 to now push-

ing closer to 11,000.

As we’ve grown in distribution, we’ve also grown in understanding what our read-

ers want. Many tell us they love our events calendars. They also appreciate learn-

ing more about companies through our business profiles and press releases. We want

to provide content that will help producers, operators, and support companies oper-

ate more efficiently and grow.

The next step in our growth is to focus our content even more. In 2013, we’re in-

troducing our editorial calendar. We’ll customize our articles, profiles and press re-

leases so that each topic can be explored more fully. The start of our calendar is

below. If you have a topic you’d like us to cover later in the year or wish to con-

tribute to these topics, please let us know.

Also listed below are some of the shows where we’ll be attending, distributing, or ex-

hibiting. Hope to see you there!

Along with the holiday season, the month of December will also bring with itthe first day of winter and a significant drop in temperatures. When workingoutdoors, this drop in temperature can be sudden and life threatening. The fol-lowing article will define and outline frostbite and hypothermia, what signsand symptoms to be aware of, a few treatment options and some tips on howto stay safe and warm while on the job. While the information in this articlewon’t help keep you out of the cold, it should give you some insight as to howto keep safely protected from the elements.

FrostbiteFrostbite occurs when the skin and body tissue just beneath the skin freeze.Frostbite causes a loss of feeling and color in the affected area, and most com-monly affects the nose, ears, cheeks, chin, fingers and toes. When strickenwith frostbite, the skin will become very cold, then numb, hard and pale. As aresult of the fact that frostbite usually affects smaller, more exposed parts ofthe body and begins with a numbing sensation, it is possible for areas of frost-bite to go unnoticed until someone else points it out.

A few signs and symptoms of frostbite include, but are not limited to, a slightprickly or itching sensation, red, white pale or grayish-yellow skin, hard or waxylooking skin, burning sensations, numbness, clumsiness due to joint or musclestiffness, and in more severe cases, blistering. If you start no notice any ofthese signs, immediately get into a warmer area. If showing signs such as blis-tering or areas of black skin, immediately contact a medical profes- sional.

It is important to remember that frostbite occurs in stages. Stage one is knownas frostnip, a mild form of frostbite where your skin will turn red and feel verycold. If treated at this stage, frostnip may create slight pain and tingling as the

skin is rewarmed, but will not permanently damage the skin. The second stageis known as superficial frostbite. This stage occurs as the reddened skin turnswhite or very pale. Although the skin may remain soft, it is likely that some icecrystals may form on the tissue. If treated at this stage, the skin may appearmottled, blue or purplish as it is warmed or thawed. The affected person maynotice some stinging, burning or swelling of the area, as well as a fluid-filledblister on the affected area within 24 to 36 hours. The third stage is severe ordeep frostbite. If full frostbite has set in, all of the layers of skin as well as thetissues below have been affected. If severe or deep frostbite occurs, seek im-mediate medical attention, as large blisters and black areas of dead tissue arelikely to develop.

Frostbite generally occurs in one or a combination of 2 different ways. First islosing body heat, which is frostbite in conjunction with hypothermia. As thebody loses heat, it reduces blood flow to the extremities to protect internalfunctions. When this reduction in blood flow to the extremities occurs, thebody temperature on these areas drops quickly and can result in freezing tis-sue. The second way to get frostbite is from direct contact with somethingvery cold. When in direct contact with very cold items, such as ice or metal, heat is conducted away from the body. Exposure to items at these tempera-tures lowers the temperature of the skin, freezing the tissue.

Frostbite can be prevented, and the following are a few ways to keep safe andwarm while on the job. By limiting the time spent outdoors in cold, wet orwindy weather and by dressing in layers, it is very easy to keep control of yourbody temperature. Ears and fingertips are very susceptible to frostbite, so tryto wear a hat that completely covers the ears, and include a face shield as wellif possible. It is also a good idea to wear mittens instead of gloves when pos-sible, as mittens provide better protection for the fingers. Keeping alert forsigns and symptoms of frostbite, as well as having an emergency kit that in-cludes warm clothing are also very easy ways to keep protected from droppingtemperatures.

SAFETY ON THE JOBCold Weather Awareness - Frostbite & Hypothermia

Continued e

THE NORTHEAST ONG MARKETPLACE • DECEMBER 2012 • PAGE 11

HypothermiaHypothermia occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can produce heat, causing a dangerously low body temperature. Normal body temperature isusually around 98.6o F, hypothermia occurs as the body temperature passesbelow 95o F. When the body temperature drops, the heart, nervous systemand other organs can’t work correctly. If left untreated, hypothermia can even-tually lead to complete failure of the heart and respiratory systems, and even-tually to death.

Hypothermia is most often caused by exposure to cold weather or immersion in acold body of water. Some signs and symptoms of hypothermia include but are notlimited to shivering, slurred speech, confusion, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, weak pulse and slow or shallow breathing. It is important to remember that a per-son suffering from hypothermia usually isn’t aware of their condition. Be aware ofco-workers, as the confusion usually associated with hypothermia prevents self-awareness.

If someone on your crew is suffering from hypothermia symptoms, first contact amedical professional. After calling for help, first remember to be gentile with theaffected person. Do not massage or rub someone who may be hypothermic as ex-cessive, vigorous or jarring movements may trigger cardiac arrest. Next, try tomove the person out of the cold and remove any wet clothing. If unable to re-move the person from the cold, do your best to shield them from the cold andwind as much as possible and try to insulate them from the cold ground. Use blan-kets, share body heat and attempt to provide warm, non-caffeinated beveragesas a means to increase body temperature. If using warm compresses, rememberto only apply them to the neck, chest wall or groin. Do not apply heat to the armsor legs, as this could force cold blood back to the vital organs, causing the coretemperature to drop. This drop in core temperature can be fatal. Do not apply di-rect heat, such as hot water, a heating pad or heating lamp to warm the affectedperson. This extreme heat can damage skin, cause an irregular heartbeat, or causecardiac arrest.

There are a few hypothermia prevention tips, very similar to frostbite prevention, which are very easily remembered by using the acronym COLD.

Cover. Wear a hat or other protective covering to prevent body heat from escap-ing from your head face and neck. Also keep your hands protected with mittens,as they are more effective than gloves.

Overexertion. Avoid overexerting yourself and creating sweat. A combination of wet clothing and cold will lead to a faster loss of body heat.

Layers. Layering your clothing will allow for removal to reduce sweating, or the ad-dition of layers for added protection.

Dry. Stay as dry as possible. Get out of wet clothing as soon as possible, and payclose attention to keeping your hands and feet dry.

Hypothermia and frostbite are very serious medical conditions and should beavoided at all costs. Hopefully this article has delivered some insight to what tolook for as well as what to do if an emergency presents itself in cold conditions.Planning properly and having the correct gear on hand can mean the difference be-tween life and death when dealing with extremely cold conditions. For more in-formation on frostbite and hypothermia, visit the Centers for Disease Control andPrevention website at www.cdc.gov.

Colorado Lining International, Inc. was founded in 1978, in Parker, Col-orado and is a certified fabricator and installer of quality geomem-branes. The company has over 3 decades of service and has fabricatedand installed more than 800 million square feet of geomembranes andspecialty materials.

CLI’S OIL & GAS CONTAINMENT OFFERINGS

POND, PIT AND IMPOUNDMENT LINERSProper engineering and construction of lining systems used in the con-tainment of production water generated by horizontal drilling and hy-draulic fracturing processes is a critical issue for the future of oil and gasproduction. The Federal and State governments as well as many industryorganizations recognize their responsibility for the health and welfare oftheir communities in relation to the drilling, processing & storage of Oil& Gas or applications. CLI offers a variety of materials designed and en-gineered for oil and gas appli-cations. By offering customsized panels which eliminateup to 80% of field seams wecan guarantee quality andspeed construction in thefield. We also offer trainedand certified field servicescrews all with the properhealth and safety training re-quired to meet your specificneeds.

Supportive materials are often necessary for containment that are reli-able and extremely safe for the environment. These specialty materialslike GCLs, Geocomposites and Geotextiles add peace of mind and confi-dence to the ability of a complete system.

MOBILE WATER IMPOUNDMENTSColorado Lining’s storage tank options are becoming a popular alterna-tive to ground storage. Above ground storage systems are appealing fora number of reasons. These systems are designed for multiple sets andare easy to install and remove. They are highlyvisible, require very little excavation, leaks arequickly detected, and secondary containmentis often less complicated. CLI’s panel fabrica-tion and production is done in our climate con-trolled factories providing high quality certifiedseams that save both time and money in thefield. CLI recommends the use of reinforcedlining materials for this application. With ver-tical wall applications such as the mobile waterimpoundments the reinforcing scrim addstremendous strength and durability to the wallsections of each panel.

SECONDARY CONTAINMENTColorado Lining recognizes the im-portance and necessity of regula-tion for environmental safetyspecific to this trade. Secondaryand spill containment is criticalfor oil and gas. It is VOC& Solvent Free making it an evenbetter choice for the environ-ment. It is easily installed andcures and dries quickly. It too canbe specified and designed as partof a multilayer system to meetspecific regulation.

FLOATING COVERSWith the protectionof ground, water andland elements, comesthe thought and re-quirement for pro-tection of wildlifeand against air andodor pollutants. Withone of the best Tech-nical groups in themarket CLI has beenable to offer innova-tive solutions to thefloating cover market in the Oil and Gas Industry. CLI has utilized its ex-perience in gas collecting systems for agriculture to provide cost effec-tive cover systems that are designed and engineered for the long term intough Oil and Gas applications.
