The Aurora Borealis - Northern Lights are caused by the interaction of Earth’s magnetic field with the flow of highly-charged particles from the sun. Collisions of these particles with atmospheric (Relating to or located in the atmosphere) molecules (causes energy emissions visible light.)

The glass tubes of neon signs are filled with gas. When they are turned on, the electrical voltage energizes electrons in the gas, causing them to emit light. The colour of the light you see depends on the type of gas in the tube.
