Summer is a busy time for all tennis pros. We are on the courts six to eight hours each day and the activities range from our club tournaments, camps, private lessons and much more.

This summer proves to be an exciting one with our San Diego WTT Aviators coming back to the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa from the end of July to early August.

On the San Diego USPTA front, we will look to off er the teaching certifi cations exam on July 17 at Rancho Santa Fe Tennis Club as well as one at the Coronado Tennis Center on September 11.

Lastly, we have been given a wonderful opportunity to host the 2016 USPTA World Conference right here in our own backyard. The conference will take place Septem-ber 25-29 in Indian Wells at the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort & Spa. Last year, New Orleans proved to be an amazing event, although I look to our Coachella Valley conference as one not to be missed.

On the home front for our USPTA pros and the mandatory education requirements needed, we are looking to help the last few teaching pros continue their USPTA teach-ing certifi cation while acquiring the six mandatory credits. The San Diego USPTA board will continue to off er specialty courses and seminars with free lunches and much more that will help to provide more credits to those in need.

As we look ahead, we have some great news at our fi ngertips. If you can believe it, we are seeing more and more sports decline in participation, while tennis grows! Football has one of the biggest declines due to the worries of injuries. Many other sports have also shown a decline from year-to-year. Tennis, on the other hand, has enjoyed a 6% increase in participation over the last year which bodes well for all the teaching pros out there.

Keep up the great work and enjoy your summer on and off the courts.

Th e 2016 USPTA World Conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort & Spa, September 25-29, 2016.The annual World Conference for the USPTA will be held in our Division at the Hyatt Regency in Indian Wells, next to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. For anyone still needing your professional development educational credits, this is the place to get all the credits you need.

The line-up of speakers is not announced yet, but rest assured, they always have the top presenters in the country giving educational seminars. Additionally, there will be a buying show with dozens of exhibitors showcasing their goods. This always is a great show where one can look and touch all the latest in tennis technology and related accessories.

This year, they will be opening up the Master’s tournament for those attending the conference. More information will be forthcoming from national on this event if you would like to join in the tournament.

Lastly, we will be needing some volunteers from our Division to act as speaker introducers. Following the introduction of the speaker to the audience, the volunteer will need to stay till the end to collect paperwork and ensure a transition to the next speaker. We will be needing volunteers for most of the sessions plus the specialty courses. The volunteer will need to be registered for the course or convention. If you would like to volunteer for this, email Don at [email protected].

Information on a Division party during the conference will be sent out when it gets closer. This is the one event in our Division that you don’t want to miss!

Volley is Fun

by Mike Rogers

Many tennis students don’t volley like in the old days. One of the reasons is, that the game is faster with the high performance racquets and you get passed quicker. But the game is changing. You see on TV, the pros are sneaking in on certain shots. Novak Djokovic is coming in more often to close out the point with a winning vol-ley. This is good coaching by Borris Becker, a serve-and-volleyer in the eighties.

When hitting your volley, whether forehand or backhand, you need to run through your volleys. If you stop, everything goes down, like on the breaks of your car; it will stop your forward momentum. Teaching for Vic Braden and studying his system, I recall him saying that the volley should be like a table top motion, not to hit down and to keep moving through the shot.

Your volley should be simple, like catching a ball or punch with your open hand like in hand ball. The racquet is the extension of your hand. Hit off your outside foot, you will be more balanced for the next volley. The bottom edge of your racquet head should be open. If the racquet is not vertical, the ball will go down into the net, unless you are right on top of the net.

Your volley is fun, just keep it simple. Be aggressive and you will get a better workout.

When most people think of tennis court surfaces, con-crete, clay, and grass come to mind. But with today’s variety of tennis balls (foam, red, orange, green and traditional yellow), tennis can be played on just about any surface – even Astroturf!

So on March 19th, District’s Military Out-reach leaders Steve Kappes, Geoff Griffi n, and Josh Jorgensen set up 10 mini-courts on the football fi eld at the 32nd Street Naval Station and facilitated a family-friendly Tennis Play Day for thousands of military families who came to enjoy the Navy’s annual “Spring Fling”. This is the fourth time the District has participated in this event.

Along with a massive egg hunt, a fun run, carnival rides, puppet shows and more, the tennis balls fl ew back and forth as kids and their parents discovered the joy and ease of playing tennis with the modifi ed equipment and balls.

Everyone was surprised to learn of this new approach to making tennis so easy and fun for beginners of all ages, and many took home information on other tennis play dates and summer programs across San Diego County for adults and kids alike.

volunteers from across the San Diego Tennis commu-nity also run the ongoing free weekly Wounded War-

rior tennis clinics for disabled service members and veter-ans every Tuesday at Balboa Tennis Club, and annual national Wounded Warrior Tennis Camps; the 5th Annual Camp took place from May 15-21, 2016. Over 50 wounded, ill , and injured service

members and veterans from 24 states participated in 16 hours of tennis instruction and friendly competitions designed to introduce them to the game and help with their physical and emotional rehabilitation and com-munity re-integration.

Evening social events pro-vided additional opportu-nities for socializing and camaraderie. Thanks to donations from local busi-nesses, veteran and commu-nity support organizations, tennis clubs and individuals, all the participants’ costs were covered – airfare, lodg-ing, meals, tennis equipment and more.

Thanks to those of you who provided fi nancial and in-kind contributions. If you would like to help support this nationally recognized program, please contact Steve Kappes, [email protected]. More infor-mation is available at www.sdwoundedwarriortennis.org. The program is not affi liated with the Wounded Warrior Project organization.
