The winter holidays are upon us, and while we make preparations typical of the season – unpacking decorations and shopping for ingredients for

grandma’s best recipes – we all know that this year’s celebrations will need to look a little bit different. As our country fights against the COVID-19 virus, perhaps the most important part of many holiday celebrations will be missing – the opportunity to gather together with family and loved ones.

As you are aware, the spread of the coronavirus in our state has reached a critically high rate. This is a virus which spreads even when people are asymptomatic and don’t even suspect they might have it. Health care professionals are telling us it can be easily spread from one person to another during traditional holiday activities where we gather for shared meals or rituals.

No matter which holiday you are celebrating, we want it to be a safe one for you and your family. We understand how difficult it has been to be separated from your family and friends for such an extended period during this pandemic. We recognize that it will be particularly difficult for everyone to maintain vigilant social distancing given how special the holidays are to all of us.

This year will surely be a hard one for everyone. However, the members in our Veterans Homes are uniquely prepared for this kind of holiday season. Why? Because we have done this before. Most of us have served in the military, away from our families, sometimes even in poor conditions or difficult circumstances, sacrificing for the betterment of others. We know how to connect through letters and phone calls when physical space separates us and we have learned to celebrate with “adopted” family, our brothers and sisters with whom we served.

We have done this before, and we can do it once again. Let us serve as an example to those who may be, for the first time, experiencing a special day away from those they love, and, together, let us try to make the best of difficult times. I know the King staff are making plans for joyous celebrations this season. I hope the members and staff at King will lean on each other when needed, as we all did during our time in the service, and find a way to enjoy the holidays together. To the King community –members, family members, friends, staff, and volunteers – I wish you happy and healthy holidays and look forward to the day we can celebrate together.

First of all, thanks to Mike for the wonderful article about veterans last month. It was very important to get that out there. Thanks for stating what many of us have thought but never

stated for all of you to see yourself!

Christmas Eve was always special because we went to Grandma and Grandpa Schmidt’s when we were young. We’d go for supper which was always something very nice. After an evening of togetherness, we would begin to open our gifts. That was always a special time. Our gifts were often something we would really cherish because they were a bit nicer than what we received from our parents. Those “grandma” gifts were usually gifts that us kids really wanted a lot but probably never would have received otherwise.

After a wonderful evening with Grandma and Grandpa it was time for home so off, we went-tired but very happy kids. Then when we got home it was off to bed for us kids. Then it would be up early in the morning because we needed to take Pa and Ma’s gift and Grandma and Grandpa Morse’s gifts to them before Grandma and Grandpa Schmidt came for Christmas dinner with us.

It was tradition for Grandma and Grandpa Schmidt to go to Aunt Reen’s and Uncle Eddie’s for Christmas breakfast. Then they would come to our house in time to enjoy a lovely visit and have Christmas dinner with us. Awhile after dinner and more visiting it was time for Grandma and Grandpa to take off and go to Uncle David and Aunt Martha’s home for supper.

It seems amazing that our Schmidt Grandparents never got a lot bigger over the Christmas holidays. But they never did. They just looked nice. They just wanted to make sure they got to the homes of each of their children on Christmas day so nobody would be upset because they hadn’t gotten a visit from them.

What a wonderful time of year... even in the midst of Covid 19!We know life will be different this year, not experiencing the activities of the Christmas

Season, both on our King Campus and with our families.Bur there is reason to be grateful for that which can not change... the celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus!

As we experienced in November, Thanksgiving... giving the Lord our expressions of gratefulness, we now have the opportunity to express our thanksgiving and praise for the gift of Jesus!

Luke 2:8-12 (NIV) And there were Shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angle of the Lord said to them, Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy and will be for all the people. Today in the town of David, a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Imagine... in the quietness of the night, a great proclamation being announced! The long time awaited Messiah has arrived!

But wait... born in a manger? The King of Kings, born in a manger? Among the cattle, the sheep, the stench?Should not the Savior, the King of Kings, been born in a Palace?YES... born in a manger, in His lowly estate... but hailed as a King!

This same Savior, given the name Jesus, for He shall save people from their sins. (Matthew 1:21) NIVImmanuel, God Himself was now among us! (Matthew 1:22-23) NIV

As I got a little older I was living in town working as a long-distance telephone operator while in high school. So, I was able to get gifts for my siblings. I have one older brother and four younger brothers and four younger sisters. That was such a thrill for me.

It seemed there were always babies at our house so at Christmas I was so excited to go shopping for special baby toys and clothes. That was probably one of the biggest thrills of all my Christmas shopping. I always tried to get something each sibling would enjoy. Apparently, I succeeded with my closest sister because she never stopped thanking me for buying her a small kodak camera and film for it. That was a special joy for me.

Time moved on and eventually I was a very happy Momma! What a joy to be able to take my children to church. My heart rejoiced that my children were learning the genuine meaning of Christmas! That was the way to celebrate Jesus’ birth. Every time I think of that I want wo to take some clothes and blankets to him so that he wouldn’t be laying on scratchy hay. But I am sure glad he came! May we be worthy.

Life continued to move on. Our family kept growing bigger and older. Getting gifts for the kids became more difficult but the kids did survive and continued to learn more about Jesus. They grew to love the Jesus story and seemed to overcome the pain of no superior gifts. They were and are GREAT KIDS! Nobody complained or whined because they didn’t get the kind of gifts they really would have liked.

One Christmas story that still smarts doesn’t refer to my children but to my siblings. I didn’t hear about this situation until it was after the fact, so it was too late to do anything. Quite a while after Christmas one of the kids spilled the situation to us. It seems Mom had no money for gifts for the younger siblings who were still living at home. Apparently, they went to a store and charged all kinds of wonderful gifts that the kids really enjoyed. Some time later the people from the store came out to my parents to repossess the kid’s gifts. It hurts my heart just reading this again. How do you think my mom felt, or the children to see those gifts were gone? And sadly, they didn’t have Jesus to help them deal with the situation.

merry christmas to each and every one of you! May your season be filled with Peace and Joy!!!

Jesus proclaimed that He came not to be served... but to serve!Radical thinking by a King, don’t you think?

I am grateful that he came for you, for me, for the world.Jesus was born, Jesus came that he would die….die for you, for me, for the world.Jesus’ greatest act of love and sacrificial service is that He chose to have the sins of the World nail Him to the Cross. To be the lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the World. (John 1:29) NIV

Luke 2:13-20 (NIV) Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom His favor rest.”

When the angels had left then and gone into Heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “ Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

In this Holy Season, we have the opportunity to glorify and praise God for the gift of His Son, Jesus... born for you, for me, for the world.God’s Son, Jesus died for you, for me, for the world. And there is more... God’s Son arose from the dead, the grave could not hold him!God’s Son, Jesus, arose for you, for me, for the world. On the third day, life reappeared... our Savior lives again, never to die again!John11:25-26(NIV) Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.” Do you believe this?

Jesus, truly is the most wonderful gift of all, and truly the reason for the Season!Yet, to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God. John1:12 (NIV)Have you or will you receive the most wonderful gift of all?

In this very special time of year, I and we, as a Chaplain Team extend to each of you a most Blessed Christmas and New Year!

“What Will You Miss This Christmas?”Written By: Francine Engle

DECEMBER Anniversary26 Glenn and Carol Remington

What will you miss this Christmas When nothing’s quite the sameWhen most of what can all be goneLeaves what always will remain

Will you miss the bustlethe shopping days galoreLooking for the lowest priceRacing store to store

How bout all the party timeThe concerts and the playsOr maybe you’ll miss the cookiesyou baked for days and days

Perhaps it’s all the companythat you will miss the mostSeeing friends and familyfor gatherings you would host

There might be someone specialthat isnt here this yearAnd then of course its them you’ll missand you will shed a tear

Whatever you won’t have this yearthat you’ve enjoyed beforeStill lingers in your memoryTo treasure even more

The Library has added several books to its permanent collection. The following are some of those books.

WISCONSIN VETERANS HOME AT KING Library News

The Room of White Fire by T. Jefferson Parker Roland Ford--once a cop, then a marine, now a private investigator--is good at finding people. But when he’s asked to locate Air Force veteran Clay Hickman, he realizes he’s been drawn into something deep and dark. He knows war, having served as a Marine in first Fallujah; he also knows personal pain, as only two years have passed since his wife, Justine, died. What he doesn’t know is why a shroud of secrecy hangs over the disappearance of Clay Hickman--and why he’s getting a different story from everyone involved. To begin with, there’s Sequoia, the teenage woman who helped Clay escape; she’s smart enough to fend off Ford’s questions but impetuous enough to be on the run with an armed man. Then there’s Paige Hulet, Clay’s doctor, who clearly cares deeply for his welfare but is impossible to read, even as she inspires in Ford the first desire he has felt since his wife’s death. And there’s Briggs Spencer, the proprietor of the mental institution who is as enigmatic as he is brash, and ambitious to the point of being ruthless. What could Clay possibly know to make this search so desperate? What began as just a job becomes a life-or-death obsession for Ford, pitting him against immensely powerful and treacherous people and forcing him to contend with chilling questions about truth, justice, and the American way.

The Nine of Us: Growing Up Kennedy by Jean Kennedy Smith In this evocative and affectionate memoir, Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith, the last surviving child of Joe and Rose Kennedy, offers an intimate and illuminating look at a time long ago when she and her siblings, guided by their parents, laughed and learned a great deal under one roof.

Prompted by interesting tidbits in the newspaper, Rose and Joe Kennedy would pose questions to their nine children at the dinner table. “Where could Amelia Earhart have gone?” “How would you address this horrible drought?” “What would you do about the troop movements in Europe?” It was a nightly custom that helped shape the Kennedys into who they would become. Before Joe and Rose’s children emerged as leaders on the world stage, they were a loving circle of brothers and sisters who played football, swam, read, and pursued their interests. They were children inspired by parents who instilled in them a strong work ethic, deep love of country, and intense appreciation for the sacrifices their ancestors made to come to America. “No whining in this house!” was their father’s regular refrain. It was his way of reminding them not to complain, to be grateful for what they had, and to give back.

Robert Ludlum’s The Bourne Initiative by Eric Van Lustbader General Boris Karpov, head of the feared Russian FSB, is dead. But Karpov has reached out from the grave with an unstoppable cyber operation he conceived before his murder, aimed at the heart of the United States--a way to steal the president’s nuclear launch codes. Who has taken over the operation? Karpov trusted only one man: Jason Bourne. But can Bourne be working against his own country? The U.S. Government is convinced of his treason, and is doing everything in its power to kill him. Flushed from cover and gravely wounded, Bourne’s only hope is to join forces with his bitterest enemy: a powerful Somali terrorist named Keyre, and his protégée, the Angelmaker. If he hopes to survive, Bourne has no choice but unravel the mystery of Karpov’s last legacy--a weaponized code that may bring about the unthinkable: a violent end to America.
