OCTOBER 2018

The Woman’s Relief Corps donated their original charter document to the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King. It was this document that gave them the official seal of approval

to establish their group. The Woman’s Relief Corps played an integral role when the Home opened, including caring for the members and paying for nurses salaries.

Last month, Cindy Parry of the Quilts of Valor Foundation, presented several handmade quilts to six Veterans . Cindy is the daughter of one of our members and she spent a year making the quilts. Each quilt says, “Thank you for your service, sacrifice, and valor in serving our nation.” Members were surrounded by family and friends.

Recognizing WVH-King Volunteers

Meet Jim and Cathy Tratz

As mentioned in last month’s Volunteer, Jim Schneider and Jim Tratz have known each other

over 50 years. Their friendship has brought all four of the ceramic quadruplets together to volunteer at the home.

Jim Tratz’s first wife, Sharon, passed away with cancer in 2003 on their 46th Wedding Anniversary.Jim is a life member of AMVETS and Sharon was a life member and active in the Auxiliary. They both had 4 children, 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Jim retired from Sears with 28.5 years as a repair technician and was also a past AMVET Department District and Local Commander, going up the chairs on all levels. In addition, Jim is a founding member of the Oshkosh Honor Guard, Marine Corps League, and many others too numerous to mention.

Jim and Cathy met each other through the AMVETS. Sharon, Jim’s first wife, and Cathy were friends and both were department officers. Jim and Cathy were married in 2005. Cathy has 4 sons, 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Cathy’s hobbies are crocheting hats for low income kids and sponsoring many activities for her Veterans. She also loves being Uncle Sam in local parades and doing numerous flag programs as Betsy Ross

for Veteran groups, schools and anyone that asks. Cathy has been involved with the AMVETS since 1972. She is a life member of AMVETS LADIES AUXILIARY and was a National Officer this year. Cathy is a past Department President three times after working her way up the chairs. She also held offices on the District and Local Level. She is the

current hospital and VAVS Officer for the Department and has been since 1981. Outside of serving veterans, Cathy retired from Harnischfeger (P&G Mining) with 33 years in 2005. She also worked State Fair for 15 years and retired as the Supervisor of Transportation in 2006. Besides helping out with the ceramics program, Jim and Cathy have been doing Sunday Packer

parties for the veterans here at King for the past 9 years.

And that folks, is the rest of the story about our dedicated ceramic quadruplet volunteers!

ODE TO KING

Our country was dividedBy the sale of colored men.

In the 1860s our nation was atWar once again.

Civil War discussions stillCarry on today.

Both sides continue to see it in Their own special way.

God’s on our sideWar leaders say out of the blue.

I don’t know how you feelBut I don’t believe it to be true.

At the dawn of the war,Lincoln opened two homes.

They both remain and shouldBe covered with domes.

Wisconsin has one home; The other’s in Maine.

We pray in Lincoln’s memoryThey’ll always remain.

The high quality of staffIs not found in all places.

Their dedication and caringIs written on their faces.

I’ve been to them both. They’re the best of the best.

Again – one is out East; The other’s in the Midwest.

The eagle soars over thisFacility in the USA.

I pray it keeps flyingOver KING every day.

Have life circumstances ever changed for you, over your life time?

Silly question, isn’t it?

It has been said that, “Change is Inevitable”!

We all can look back on our past, and even in our present, and know that life circumstances change and can change quickly……some for the good, and some for the not so good!

In the present, can you imagine how life circumstances have changed for our dear fellow Americans in Florida, Alabama, the Gulf Coast, and the Carolina’s with the arrival of the Hurricanes this past August & September……. as well as the Wild Fires of California this past Summer, and even at the time of this writing…..are still burning.

How we need to stop and pray for them often!

Life circumstances have changed for my wife and I this past Summer.

We now have 16 Grandchildren and 10 of them have recently entered the “World of Junior and Senior High School”. Can you imagine all of the activity and life change among them?

In praying about this season within our family, we decided to put our Waupaca Home up for sale so that we might move closer to our family, whom all live in the Greater Fox Valley / Appleton areas.

Within a week, we had 2 Buyers for our Home!

The House is “Sold”, and my wife’s and my life’s circumstance of change is on the move!

The Lord provided for us a Home in the Fox Crossings Township and we relocated to the Fox Valley on August 30th.

We are grateful for the Lord’s provision and direction in our life’s circumstance of change. continued on page 19

So, what have you or are you experiencing in your life’s circumstances of change?

Yes, it is true…….life circumstances change in this lifetime, but thankfully the Lord desires to be a part of our every change.

There are wonderful truths from God’s point of view as He desires to journey with us, as we enter and go through life changes.

Please allow me to encourage you from the truth of God’s Word…….which never changes:

• Jeremiah 29: 11-13 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” (NIV)• 1 John 4:16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is Love. (NIV)• 1Peter 5:7 Cast all you anxiety on Him (God) for He cares for you. (NIV)• Luke 1:37 For nothing is impossible with God. (NIV) • 1 Thessalonians 5:18 Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. (NIV)• Psalm 37:4-5 Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your ways to the Lord; trust in Him and he will do this. (NIV)• Hebrews 13:5b God has said, “never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (NIV)• Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. (NIV) • Psalm 100:5 For the Lord is good and His love endures forever; and His faithfulness continues through all generations.

The Word of God is filled with promises of His involvement in our lives!

Oh…….I cannot forget about one of my and most likely one of your favorite Psalms…….Psalm 23. The Lord is my Shepherd…..

So…….as you go thru life circumstances of change, either good changes or not so good changes…….remember that you are not alone in the journey.

Our great Shepherd and Savior Jesus, is available to you…..Allow the one who loves you most to journey along with you thru “life’s circumstances of change”…….your dependency and trust in Him for your leading is one of His desires for you!

WISCONSIN VETERANS HOME AT KING Library News

20

Knife Creek by Paul Doiron When Maine game warden Mike Bowditch is tasked with shooting wild boars that are tearing up the forest and farms in his district, he makes a horrific discovery—the body of a baby buried in a shallow grave. Even more disturbing: DNA tests link the infant to a young woman who has been missing and presumed dead after she disappeared from a group rafting trip four years earlier. As he assists the reopened investigation, Bowditch begins to suspect that some of his neighbors aren’t who they seem to be. When violence strikes close to home, he realizes that his unknown enemies will stop at nothing to keep their terrible secrets. Mike Bowditch has bucked the odds his whole career, but this time the intrepid warden may have finally followed his hunches one step too far.

It’s Not about the Bike: My Journey Back to Life by Lance Armstrong It is such an all-American story. A lanky kid from Plano, Texas, is raised by a feisty, single parent who sacrifices for her son, who becomes one of our country’s greatest athletes. Given that background, it is understandable why Armstrong was able to channel his boundless energy toward athletic endeavors. By his senior year in high school, he was already a professional triathlete and was training with the U.S. Olympic cycling developmental team. In 1993, Armstrong secured a position in the ranks of world-class cyclists by winning the World Championship and a Tour de France stage, but in 1996, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Armstrong entered an unknown battlefield and challenged it as if climbing through the Alps: aggressive yet tactical. He beat the cancer and proceeded to stun all the pundits by winning the 1999 Tour de France. In this memoir, Armstrong covers his early years swiftly with a blunt matter-of-factness, but the main focus is on his battle with cancer. Readers will respond to the inspirational recovery story, and they will appreciate the behind-the-scenes cycling information. After he won the Tour, his mother was quoted as saying that her son’s whole life has been a fight against the odds; we see here that she was not exaggerating.

The Spymistress by Jennifer ChiaveriniBorn to slave-holding aristocracy in Richmond, Virginia, and educated by Northern Quakers, Elizabeth Van Lew was a paradox of her time. When her native state seceded in April 1861, Van Lew’s convictions compelled her to defy the new Confederate regime. Pledging her loyalty to the Lincoln White House, her courage would never waver, even as her wartime actions threatened not only her reputation, but also her life.

Van Lew’s skills in gathering military intelligence were unparalleled. She helped to construct the Richmond Underground and orchestrated escapes from the infamous Confederate Libby Prison under the guise of humanitarian aid. Her spy ring’s reach was vast, from clerks in the Confederate War and Navy Departments to the very home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

The Counterfeit Agent by Alex Berenson In an Istanbul hotel, a deep source warns a CIA agent that Iran intends to kill a CIA station chief. Quickly, John Wells is called in to investigate, but before he can get far, the tip comes true. Which means that the next warning the source gives will be taken very seriously indeed. And it’s a big one. A radioactive one. As the threat level jumps and the government mobilizes, Wells must figure out what’s really going on. From a drug lord’s mansion in Guatemala to a secret plastic surgery center in Thailand to the slums of Istanbul, Wells uses every skill he has—including his ability to go undercover in the Arab world—to chase down leads. But the enemy he faces is equally determined. And soon he may be too late to pull the United States back from the brink of war.

The Right Time by Danielle Steel Abandoned by her mother at age seven, Alexandra Winslow takes solace in the mysteries she reads with her devoted father—and soon she is writing them herself, slowly graduating to dark, complex crime stories that reflect skill, imagination, and talent far beyond her years. After her father’s untimely death, at fourteen Alex is taken in by the nuns of a local convent, where she finds twenty-six mothers to take the place of the one she lost, and the time and encouragement to pursue her gift. Alex writes in every spare moment, gripped by the plots and themes and characters that fill her mind. Midway through college, she has finished a novel—and manages to find a seasoned agent, then a publisher. But as she climbs the ladder of publishing success, she resolutely adheres to her father’s admonition: Men read crime thrillers by men only—and so Alexandra Winslow publishes under the pseudonym Alexander Green, her true identity known only to those closest to her, creating a double life that isolates her. Her secret life as the mysterious and brilliantly successful Alexander Green—and her own life as a talented young woman—expose her to the envious, the arrogant, and Hollywood players who have no idea who she really is. Always, the right time to open up seems just out of reach, and would cost her dearly. Once her double life and fame are established, the price of the truth is always too high.
