Principal’s Column
I’d like to welcome everyone back to school and
hope that you were able to get some sort of a
break along with your children.
My wife and I travelled to the Netherlands, Belgium
and Germany during our time away. We cycled
from Amsterdam to Bruges which was a great way
to see the Dutch countryside. We also spent some
time in s’Hertogenbosch, Cologne, Munich and
Berlin.
We were in Munich for Oktoberfest (which was a
real eye opener) and travelled a fair bit by train
which is a great way to go long distances between
cities.
I think the opportunity to travel is one of the great
privileges of our time. We are able to get to places
relatively quickly these days (not that those long
haul flights seem very quick when you’re on them)
and flights are probably cheaper than they have
ever been.
And of course travel offers great experiences.
Parents who take their children on overseas
holidays often approach the school to ask for some
work for their child to do while they’re away. I
usually believe that the travel in itself is such a great
learning opportunity that no more prepared ‘work’
would be required – except perhaps to encourage
continued reading. Visiting landmarks, learning
about the history of a place, getting to know the

different people, different customs and talking
about all the things you feel, see and have learnt,
all help us to get even more from the experience.
Schools often have concerns about student
absences – there’s lots of research that shows that
kids generally do better at school with better
attendance – but there are absences and there
absences. Holidays can be great experiences that
can add depth and breadth to knowledge and
perspectives.
2019 Classes – Parent
Input
Often during this time of year the school begins to
get questions about how class lists for the next
school year are developed. Basically, we begin
working on this early in Term 4. The following
criteria are considered as the staff creates a
recommendation to the principal for class
composition that includes:
• students with special learning styles and
needs
• high achieving students
• balanced male/female ratios where
possible
• known interpersonal relationships that will
maintain a positive class climate
• teacher recommendation
• learning & teaching style balance
• parent concerns
Please note that parent requests are considered
when the request is based on the learning style
of the student or other known factors that may
have a positive or negative influence on the
child. We do not place children based on simple
choice. As noted above many factors are taken into
consideration.
Here are the steps to the process:
1. In the newsletter, parents will be
notified to send a written letter to the
principal if they want to give input to the
process of class placement for their child.
2. The letter must be received by the school
no later than 26th October in order
to be considered. This is an important
deadline as letters received after that
date will be too late to be considered.
3. The letter must state the criteria and
learning environment best suited for the
student as per the parent opinion (this
is a piece of the input to the process along
with the teacher input). We ask that you do
NOT request a teacher specifically by
name.
4. In Term 4, the principal will direct the
teaching staff to prepare class lists for
2019 based on the criteria listed above
including both teacher and parent input.

5. Upon completion of the draft class lists the
principal will meet with each grade level
team of teachers to review the lists
and discuss the criteria for how they
were developed.
6. Parents are informed of their child’s class
placement prior to the end of the school
year.

All students whose medications have expired have
received a call from the school, and we request that
replacements are forwarded as soon as possible.
Thank you to those parents who have supplied new
medications. Updated Anaphylaxis and Asthma

requested.
We would appreciate families supplying these as

Hats! Hats! Hats!
Reminder
From September 1st, all students are required to

areas (this does not include under the shade sails
in the playground). These shaded areas are the
covered areas surrounding the tiger turf. Please
note, we are also following our updated uniform

navy bucket hat.
