John Lee of Kismet will make his official visit to the Jennings Lions Club at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, at the Broken Wheel. Mr. Lee was elected district governor for the 2008-09 club year, which began July 1. He and his wife Stephanie attended the Lions International Convention in Bangkok, Thailand, in late June, where he was sworn in as the first district governor for new Lions District 17-L, which covers the entire west- ern half of Kansas. Gov. Lee is a native of eastern New Mexico and a graduate of New Mexico State University with a degree in agriculture edu- cation. He was employed by DeKalb Corp. before starting a 6,000-head contract swine finishing unit near Kismet. He and his wife attend the First Baptist Church of Plains. They have three grown children and one grand- child. He serves as a member of the Kismet City Council and as a member of the Seward County Fire Board. Don Bolt is president of the Jennings Li- ons Club, David Carter is secretary and Jeff Wahlmeier is treasurer. Other members in- clude: William Carter, Harold “Bob” Tacha, Lawrence Jennings, Kenneth Carter, Doyle Brown, Mike McKenna, Mike Bailey, Jerry Schuetz and Joe Carter. John Lee Oberlin man to be honored by Modern Woodmen Oct. 31 Robert Groneweg of Oberlin will be honored as the “Outstanding Citizen of the Year” by the Oberlin Modern Woodmen of America at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at the United Methodist Church basement. The United Methodist Women will serve a smothered-steak supper and the program will include the band “Clueless.” The public is invited. Tickets are $4 for adults and $3 for children 9 and under. Marie McKisson spent the week- end in Abilene, where she and her sister, Carol Jean Barkley of Allen, Texas, were house guests of another sister and her husband, Janie and Kent Law. On Sunday, they were joined by the women’s brother, Earl Wells and Sheila of Clay Center for lunch at Farm House in Abilene. En route to Abilene, Mrs. Mc- Kisson had dinner on Friday with a classmate and her husband, Leona and Truman Woellhos in Oak Hill. Both graduated from Longford High School. LeRoy and Sharon Stevenson have returned from Dakota Dunes, S.D., where they visited Jeremy and Ronda Pinkerman, and made the ac- quaintance of their infant daughter, Sidny Ann, who was born July 30. She has two sisters, Abby Lee and Mia Rey. Mary Anderson of Osborne, and Joy Votapka recently flew to Toronto, Canada, where they took Via Rail to see southeast Canada. They toured Toronto, Montreal and Quebec City en route to Halifax, Nova Scotia, from where they re- turned by air. Herschel and Jody Betts were among those who attended the wed- ding of Adam Lohoefener and Jenni Streb at Union Station in Kansas City on Saturday evening. They were guests of their son and family, Gene and Jan Betts and Mary Kate in Leawood and they also attended the wedding. Jim and Linda Hollowell spent a few days in Kearney, Neb., to celebrate their 40th wedding an- niversary. Everett Urban is recuperating satisfactorily after suffering a lac- eration on his left index finger in a farm accident last week. Don Rowlison was among five legendary Kansas cowboys who were honored for their contributions to the western life when they were inducted into the Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame in Dodge City on Sept. 20 at the Boot Hill Museum. He has been curator at Cotton- wood Ranch State Historic Site in Sheridan County since 1985. He coordinates the annual sheep dog trials, the barbecue contest, Christmas at Cottonwood and the Cottonwood Ranch Trail Ride. He and his wife, Mellanie, have a son, Ian. County office sending staff to meetings Farm Service Agency employees who deal with farm programs from around Kansas will attend a Farm Bill training session next Tuesday to Friday. All permanent farm program staff will attend this session. County of- fices will remain open, but will be staffed by temporary employees, said Bill R. Fuller, state executive director of the federal agency. Those employees won’t know much about the farm programs. Computers will remain off and pay- ments will not be issued, Mr. Fuller said. Questions will be addressed by regular staff when they return to the office on Monday, Oct. 27. The dance numbers include cheerleading fun, a pom-pon girl pursued by a body builder; two ship librarians in love, a ballroom ro- mance, a beach babe and a sextet of distraught lovers, along with sounds of the 1950s score by Gerschwin. Act II combines Agnes DeMille’s choreography of portions of the musicals, “Paint Your Wagon” and “Carousel.” Admission is by season ticket or $15 for adults and $8 for students at the door.
