She is the daughter of Dr. Richard and De- layne May. Runner-up was Kelly Olson, an Oberlin eighth grader, daughter of Jerry and Connie Olson of Oberlin. She went down on the word “illustrate.” Julie Carter of Jennings pronounced the words to the six contestants. Other participants included: Brittany Ritter and Kaitlyn Gillespie of Jen- nings, and Andy Gilliam and Alyssa Rippe of Oberlin. Delbert and Roxie Erickson met their sons, Kris Erickson of Wichita, and Dr. Kenyon and his wife, Stacia of Daven- port, Iowa, in Newton on Feb. 2. They all attended the Newton High School basketball game, during which Delbert Erickson, a former wrestling coach at Newton High, was inducted into the Newton High School Hall of Fame dur- ing half-time. They also attended the reception and dance which honored him and other honorees at Santa Fe School for family and friends. The Delbert Ericksons spent the weekend with Kris Erickson in Wichita and they all enjoyed the Thunders hockey game and the Lipizzan Horse Show at the coliseum. Joshua Jackson, son of Dewayne and Aurelia Jackson of Norcatur, was named to the Dean’s Honor Roll at Bethany College in Lindsborg for the fall semester. Erickson Delbert Erickson of Oberlin was one of four inducted into the Newton High School Athletic Hall of Fame on Feb. 2, during halftime at the New- ton basketball game in Ravenscroft Gymnasium. Mr. Erickson, wrestling coach at the school for 11 years, joined former basket- ball coach Walt Willis; Kent Franz, who played on Newton High’s state championship basketball team in 1979; and a standout basketball player from the 1930s, Russell “Sticker” Brian. It was the sixth class inducted into the hall. Mr. Erickson was wrestling coach at Newton from 1969 to 1980 and during that time, his teams won three state team titles, and he coached 17 state champions and 61 state qualifiers. He’s probably perhaps best remem- bered for his demeanor, said Brian Huxman, a reporter for the Newton Kansan. Mr. Erickson said he prided himself on a positive relationship with his wrestlers. “The wrestlers were dedicated, worked hard, gave everything they could and were not afraid to go the ex- tra mile,” he said. “There was great re- spect and love between the athletes and myself. “We had outstanding support from the fans, school and community. There was a tremendous sense of pride in the wrestling program and we could all share in the success. “Most of all, we had some great ath- letes at the time with an unselfish willingness to give for all.” His teams placed second at state once, won six re- gional titles and three Ark Valley League champion- ships. In making the hall pre- sentation, Roger Erickson (no relation), assistant principal at Newton High School, said, “Delbert was able to motivate and influence his wres- tlers to be top competitors. Many ath- letes he coached went on to successful wrestling careers at the university level. He finished his coaching years at New- ton with a 55-16-1 record in dual meets. Delbert was named to the Kansas Wres- tling Coach of the Year in 1977.” Mr. Erickson was accompanied to Newton by his wife, Roxie, and were met by their sons, Kris Erickson of Wichita, and Kenyon and his wife Stacia of Davenport, Iowa. They all attended a reception and dance, which honored the four men, at Santa Fe Middle School. Mr. Erickson is the son of the late Paul and Alma Erickson of rural Herndon and is a graduate of Atwood High School. He and his wife Roxie, a retired teacher, live in Oberlin. Couple wed in Leoville in double-ring ceremony Denise Carter of Jennings became the bride of Scott Taylor of Oberlin on Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at Immaculate Conception Church in Leoville. The Rev. Jim Hoover officiated at the double-ring ceremony before a Christ- mas decorated altar. Parents of the couple are Dave and Diane Carter, Jennings, and Charlie and Vickie Taylor, Oberlin. Organist was Shelly McKenna, Jen- nings. Vocalists were Ruth and Jerry Casper, Hays. The bride was given in marriage by her father. Jenny Casper, Jennings, sister of the bride, was matron of honor. Brides- maids were Mary Beth Stanley, Colby, and Heather West, Dresden, cousins of the bride; Jacinta Carter, Jennings, sis- ter of the bride, Tanci Mishler, Hays. Audrey Morel, Norton, cousin of the bride, was flower girl. Tanner Morel, Norton, was ringbearer. Mat Norman, Colby, served as best man. Groomsmen were Matt Taylor and A. J. Taylor, Oberlin, brothers of the bridegroom; Ryan Munsey, Empo- ria, and R. T. Bechman, Oberlin. A reception followed at the Leoville Parish Hall. The bride is a 1995 graduate of Jen- nings High School and attended Fort Hays State University. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree and is a substitute teacher. Her fiance graduated from Decatur Community High School and earned a degree in Communications in 2000 from Colby Community College. He is a disc jockey at KFNF Radio Station at Oberlin. They are making their home in Ober- lin. Mr. and Mrs. Scott Taylor Parent-teacher conferences set Parent-Teacher Conferences for kin- dergarten students of Oberlin Elemen- tary School will be held on Thursday and Friday, and there will be no school for students in Head Start, Develop- mental Kindergarten and kindergarten. Conferences for grades 1-6 will be held on Friday, with no school for those grades. There will not be a regular confer- ence time scheduled with the fifth and sixth grade teachers, but parents may visit with them anytime from 8 a.m. to noon and 1-3:30 p.m. in the gym. Mrs. Lohoefener and Mrs. Witt will not have scheduled times, but they will be avail- able in their room during the same hours on Friday. Couple plans April vows John and Linda Stanley of Oberlin announce the engagement of their daughter, Christina, to Eric Green, son of Kerry Green, Jennings and Laura Washburn, Norton. The bride-to-be is a 1998 graduate of Decatur Community High School and is currently working at Norton County Hospital as a Nurse’s Aide and Social Service Director. The future groom graduated from Jennings High School in 1997 and works for Poe Well Service. The wedding is planned for April 28, at the United Methodist Church in Oberlin. Eric Green and Christina Stanley Couple make plans for wedding Susan Thomson of Oberlin an- nounces the engagement of her sister, Laurel Patrice Chard, to William Sauvage, son of Keith and Maxine Sauvage of Oberlin. The bride is the daughter of the late Doyle and Audrey Faye Quenzer of Norton. The couple will make their home on a farm south of Oberlin. No date has been set for the wedding. The winner will compete in the 48th consecutive state spelling contest, scheduled for April 17 at Washburn Rural High School in Topeka. New Arrivals Jenna Dale Howard Larissa and Aleah Howard welcome their sister, Jenna Dale. She is the daughter of Hardy and Dawn Howard of WaKeeney and was born Jan. 29, 2001, at the Gove County Medical Cen- ter. She weighed 9 pounds, 1 1/4 ounces and was 19 1/4 inches long. Grandpar- ents are Don and Helen Juenemann, Selden, and D.D. and Ruth Howard, Utica. Great-grandmothers are Amelia Juenemann, Colby, and Agnes How- ard, Ransom. Joshua Martin L. Olson Mrs. Mamie Unger has her 15th great-grandchild, Joshua Martin Lynn Olson. He was welcomed on Jan. 26, 2001, by his brother, Evan Lynn, and his par- ents, Dr. and Mrs. Brian Olson. He weighed 9 pounds, 3 ounces and was 20 inches long. He lives with his family in Vernon, Texas, where his father works for Texas A&M University. Agriculture meeting planned Christian ed program to begin Tiny Tots, a Christian education pro- gram for 3-5-year-olds, will begin their spring program in March. It is to be held on Mondays from 9- 11:30 a.m. March 5-April 9 at St. John’s Lutheran Church Education Building. A meeting on carbon sequestration and how carbon emissions play a role in the future of agriculture will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday at the Norton County 4-H Building. Dr. Jeff Will- iams, K-State Age Economics Profes- sor will share his insight on this topic. He will provide an overview of issues developing around carbon sequestra- tion in soils on farms and carbon credit trading. Cosmopolitan elects new officers Eula Juenemann was elected presi- dent of the Cosmopolitan Club when seven members met on Feb. 6 at the home of Marty Munson. Dues were paid to the Decatur County Area Chamber of Commerce and a contribution was made to Smoky Hills Public Television. Members will meet at the Pizza Hut for a noon luncheon on March 5. Free throw contest held Sunday The Oberlin chapter hosted the dis- trict Knights of Columbus Free Throw contest Sunday afternoon in the Decatur Community High School gym, covering Oberlin, Leoville, Selden, Herndon, and Atwood. Each council held a con- test prior to district competi- tion, with groups divided into five age groups for both girls and boys. District winners will go on to the regional competition at 1 p.m. Sun- day at the Grinnell High School. District winners in the girls division were Annamarie Larue, Oberlin, 10- year group; Whitney Stock, Herndon, 11; Kim Wessel, Leoville, 12; and Janelle Solko, Herndon, 13. Winners in the boys division were Logan Fortin, Oberlin, 10; Drew Basgall, Herndon, 11; Rory Fossum, Oberlin, 12; Rodney Rippe, Herndon, 13, and Brett Chambers, Herndon, 14. Al J. Depperschmidt, Dresden, district deputy, presented each winner with a Knights of Columbus Free Throw Medallion.

Denise Carter of Jennings becamethe bride of Scott Taylor of Oberlin onFriday, Dec. 29, 2000, at ImmaculateConception Church in Leoville. TheRev. Jim Hoover officiated at thedouble-ring ceremony before a Christ-mas decorated altar.

Parents of the couple are Dave andDiane Carter, Jennings, and Charlieand Vickie Taylor, Oberlin.

Organist was Shelly McKenna, Jen-nings. Vocalists were Ruth and JerryCasper, Hays.

The bride was given in marriage byher father.

Jenny Casper, Jennings, sister of thebride, was matron of honor. Brides-maids were Mary Beth Stanley, Colby,and Heather West, Dresden, cousins ofthe bride; Jacinta Carter, Jennings, sis-ter of the bride, Tanci Mishler, Hays.

Audrey Morel, Norton, cousin of thebride, was flower girl. Tanner Morel,Norton, was ringbearer.

The bride is a 1995 graduate of Jen-nings High School and attended FortHays State University. She earned aBachelor’s Degree and is a substituteteacher.

Her fiance graduated from DecaturCommunity High School and earned adegree in Communications in 2000from Colby Community College. He isa disc jockey at KFNF Radio Station atOberlin.

They are making their home in Ober-lin.

Parent-teacher conferences setParent-Teacher Conferences for kin-

dergarten students of Oberlin Elemen-tary School will be held on Thursdayand Friday, and there will be no schoolfor students in Head Start, Develop-mental Kindergarten and kindergarten.

Conferences for grades 1-6 will beheld on Friday, with no school for thosegrades.

There will not be a regular confer-ence time scheduled with the fifth andsixth grade teachers, but parents mayvisit with them anytime from 8 a.m. tonoon and 1-3:30 p.m. in the gym. Mrs.Lohoefener and Mrs. Witt will not havescheduled times, but they will be avail-able in their room during the samehours on Friday.

Free throw contest held SundayThe Oberlin chapter hosted the dis-

trict Knights of Columbus Free Throwcontest Sunday afternoon in theDecatur Community HighSchool gym, coveringOberlin, Leoville, Selden,Herndon, and Atwood.

Each council held a con-test prior to district competi-tion, with groups divided intofive age groups for both girls andboys. District winners will go on tothe regional competition at 1 p.m. Sun-day at the Grinnell High School.
