CULTURAL MEETING
The October meeting will be held on Tuesday 2nd at 7.30pm.
The Cultural Meeting is held on the 1st Tuesday of the month at St Peter’s Anglican Church Hall, Church &
Beach Roads, Maroochydore at 7.30pm. All plants are to be tabled by 7.00pm for judging. Members and
visitors are most welcome. The society AGM is held at the October cultural meeting.
Society News
One of the agenda items for Tuesday’s meeting is the idea of obtaining new club shirts. Only a handful of
members have a club shirt which is outdated. Club shirts can be worn at club meetings, our shows, bus
trips and other societies’ shows. Samples of design and colour will be available at the October meeting for
your consideration. Give the topic some thought so that we can get a shirt that suits both genders.
Our society’s display at the September Nambour Orchid Show was well supported with an excellent
array of orchid genera. We received second place with our display, however, a range of foliage plants would
have further enhanced our display. Thanks to those members who assembled the display and to the members
who provided plants and to Kathy for printing the labels. Once again thank you Duncan for transporting the
display stand and for storing it at your residence.
The AGM will be held at the October meeting. All positions are vacant at this point in time so be ready to put your hand up. Many hands make light work.
If you have any matters concerning the society that needs to be discussed, it will need to be on the agenda. So please reply with any agenda items.

Plant of the Month by Barry
I have grown this orchid for the last 6 or 7 years to the size it is now, it
was in a 50 mm pot when I got it. I grow under 50% shadecloth for most
of the year but up the light over autumn and winter to nearly full sun.
It's a hungry plant over late spring and summer so I feed with organic
fertiliser like cow or sheep manure and can take as much water as you
can give it over summer. This is the way to get nice long canes. As
winter approaches, keep an eye on the terminal leaves as this will be the
indication on reducing the water it receives.......you will clearly see when
the last leaf is forming. I cut back on the watering about now and start to
give it some blossom booster. Now is the time for it to receive much
more light and by middle May, I usually cease watering completely.
Resist the urge to water, you want to see the leaves start to shrivel as it
is deciduous. By not watering now you should get flowers from top to
bottom of the canes. I repot as soon as the flowers are finished and the
new growth has obvious root activity. I use number two Orchiata bark,
charcoal and medium perlite......3-1-1.....give it a really good soaking and
then wait a week or 10 days before resuming normal watering.......the
roots should be a good length now and holding the plant in place.

Further Society News
..A Bush house visit - or orchid trek - has been organised for Saturday 5 October 2019. It is a SELF DRIVE
Car Pool outing, so please consult with fellow members, or let me know if you need help with organising a
car pool. If hubby Ken is not trekking I may need a car pool lift myself!
Meet at 9.30 am at Doug and Cath’s. The drive is 1.5 hours from Bli Bli.
They have a very large and collection of mature orchids, across many genres, but especially Cattleya’s,
Dendrobiums, speciosum. and some nice anthuriums. Doug will give us a tour, discuss his culture. The plan
is to have a self catering morning tea and Doug and Cathy will help with tea coffee drinks etc. If each car
bought a plate to share for morno's that would be great.
I loved our last trek to Cathy and Doug’s.
Can you please reply with your attendance by 28 Sep preferably? Email or call Desiree on 0431 435 181
Bring close family and friends if you wish.
Christmas Lunch
On to fun things. I have made a Christmas lunch booking at Rivershore Resort for 12 o'clock Saturday 14 December, where we dined last year. Please provide feedback on date time venue etc. I'll firm up details once I get your support and consult with the venue event manager more. Desiree
