WHAT IS AN OCEAN?

An ocean is a term for the large expanse of saltwater that co-vers over 70% of the Earth's surface. Covering this much space, the ocean habitat is an important home for much of the animal

and plant life on earth.

Although there is one world ocean, which is a sprawling, contin-uous mass of water stretching across each continent, each tec-

tonic region has its own separate ocean.
