2 - MSBCA NEWSLETTER - FEBRUARY 2017

Friends, mem-bers and supp- orters of MSBCA,

Our annual Chinese New Year celebration held on Friday, February 3rd, was a very

joyous one. Thank you for celebrating a new year of success for our community.

MSBCA also celebrated the start of the Lunar New Year in many other ways too. We had an ang pow basket arts and crafts event on January 21st. Our Mari Memasak cooking class celebrated the yee sang prosperity salad on the first day of the lunar new year. Our dancers had been invited to perform at separate New Year festivals organized by the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre and by the Carya Society in Calgary.

I would like to thank all our sub-committees, volunteers, supporters and sponsors for dedicating your time and energy into these and other activities and events.

I would also like to thank representatives from different levels of government and representatives from our fellow community associations for being part of our celebrations and for, above all, experiencing our cultures.

Our Board has finished the first quarter of the 2016/2017 term and we are entering the second quarter. Many of the larger projects on clubhouse and kitchen maintenance are concluding. The Chinese New Year celebration, which is traditionally our second biggest annual event, has been completed.

In the second quarter, many upcoming projects include more art and crafts activities, more cooking classes, and more

dance and singing programs especially in preparation for Cultural Night in June. Our website and many other tools of our public outreach may be updated. We will try to provide better benefits to members in our community. And our ability to provide better mechanisms so they may voice their interests and we may address them will continue to be a broad study in progress.

It gives me pleasure to see and to know that our community creates an environment that is conducive for the creativity, volunteerism and enjoyment of many.

Our community is a part of Canada. This year, we celebrate Canada’s 150th  anniversary. We pay tribute to a multicultural country formed by the contributions of all those who have made it their home, having come from somewhere else.

Happy Chinese New Year and may peace be upon you always.

It was wonderful to see children, adults and seniors coming together to welcome the Year of the Rooster. Mayor Nenshi gave his speech about the importance of the spirit of community. NDP MLA Karen gave her best wishes on behalf of the province. Everyone who came that night had contributed a small part in supporting MSBCA because the patrons made the evening memorable and special. February 3, 2017 was no ordinary banquet. It was an evening where the food and the program had a flavour of the Chinese heritage and culture that’s unique to our community. Family members and friends on each table stood up and participated in the South East Asian Yee Sang ritual by tossing the smoked salmon,

mixed greens and sweet plum sauce with chopsticks as high as possible, without spilling over, to symbolize good fortune. Performers of all ages from our very own community dressed in their colourful costumes entertained the crowd with their dancing, music and singing. Twelve quality hampers each represented by the twelve different Chinese zodiac animals were given away that night as door prizes with help from our sponsors. The ang pow ritual lives on when children and single adults came forward to receive the red packet for good

luck from the wise elders. “Education breeds confidence. Confidence breeds hope. Hope breeds peace.” A old saying from Confucius that we celebrated by giving teens from Grades 6, 9 and 12 a small monetary gift and a beautiful plaque for their accomplishment. We hope our children will cherish MSBCA CNY2017 banquet with a smile one day in their adulthood and pass on our CNY rituals. The evening ended with an encouragement of hope that the Year of the Rooster will bring both prosperity and good health to all in the community.

Story and photos by James Lee

On February 6, 2017, Carya Society held a Chinese New Year party at the Marlborough Park Community Centre to celebrate the year of Rooster. MSBCA dancers were invited to perform at the multicultural festival. There were over 150 people, mainly seniors from various ethnic groups in attendance.

The program before lunch includes choir, several dance performances and demonstration of Qigong. Eleven members of MSBCA dance group participated and contributed three dances and Qigong demonstration at the event. They were all very lively and enjoyable performances and well received at the party. Following are brief descriptions of the performances contributed by the MSBCA dance group.

Chinese New Year Dance

People from different parts of China and of different ethnic groups gather to celebrate family reunion and the arrival of spring. It is a lively festive event rich in culture and varied activities that can be seen in the dance.

Cheongsam Show

Cheongsam is a traditional Chinese Clothing for the ladies. It is known to represent the Chinese clothing culture. With its flowing

melodies, it shows the gracefulness, elegant and gentle nature of Chinese women.

Silk Fan Dance

Beautiful and moving "long silk fan dance" is a classical Chinese dance. With unique rhythm and without revealing the inner emotions, curved rhythm and ever-changing formation, it forms a rich variety of patterns and shapes, fully demonstrates its infinite charm.

Qigong

Qigong has a long history and is a treasure of Chinese culture. It is known to be beneficial for healing, wellness and life longevity. Hexiang Zhuang Qigong is the crystallization of Master Zhao Jinxiang's years of experience in practice and refinement. It is easy to learn and realize the benefits of this exercise for most people and has become very popular in China and around the world.

Celebrating Chinese New Year at Mari MemasakMari Memasak had a special cooking lesson to tie in and celebrate the Chinese New Year of the Rooster.

A once a year dish that is prepared only on Chinese New Year, is the “Yu Sheng”. It is a delicacy found only in South East Asia and is now made popular in the Chinese community during the Chinese New Year. The dish is meant to symbolize bringing wealth, prosperity and success to those tossing the ingredients in the dish,

which included shredded carrots, fruits, vegetables, pomelo, and raw salmon mixed with sweet and sour plum sauce. It was tasty and yummy.

To usher in a year of plenty, everyone prepared and cut lots of meat (chicken, beef, pork, fish) and vegetables for a hearty hotpot cook-it yourself meal.

CNY dessert includes glutinous balls filled with black sesame paste.

To add to the occasion, a special cultural drum display was performed by our master drummer Ben Lim to the surprise and applause of everyone.

The learned chefs had a wonderful experience of learning and cooking festive dishes in celebration of Chinese New Year at Mari Memasak.

Arts & Crafts - Ang Pow

Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre's CNY Festival

Saturday, January 21, we had our 2nd Arts and Crafts activity in the evening at the clubhouse. Helen Ong and Alice Lim led about a dozen kids to make ang pow baskets. There was a potluck dinner after for kids and parents.

On Saturday, January 21, we gave 3 afternoon dance performances at the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre's CNY festival: 1 round fan dance, 1 long fan dance, 1 qipao catwalk. The qipao group performed again on Sunday afternoon. Kudos to our dance groups led by Rosalind Lee and Kendy Lo. They were very well received by the public and the festival organizers.
