We have gained two new members since the last Newsletter. Brenda Brookes, Keesbrook in

Renfrew and Lana Smith, Lion D’Or in Ottawa. Welcome to the Club and congratulations on

your wins at the Hamilton Kennel Club All Breed Shows and the PCOO 2018 Specialty.

As a result of Larry having a severe back problem that put him in hospital for a week earlier in

the month, we were unable to attend the 2018 Specialty in Ancaster, ON. I am deeply grateful

to Susan Coulson who came and picked up the gifts etc. at the house and took them to the

show for me. Many thanks to Walter and LaVerne who picked up the on-site work of setting up

the trophy table, holding the 2018 AGM and hosting the Club’s Specialty dinner. Judy Maltby

made some of the beautiful prizes and delivered them to the show site, Judy you are a very

special lady. Thanks Mike and Jan from bringing home the items that needed to come back

here.

A special thank you to Winston Young who stepped into the role of “candids” photographer and

he took all but 2 cropped “official” photos and one of the candid photos included in this

newsletter. Thanks also to Mike/Jan Maydan for the picture of Presto on the table.

The Club thanks you all for pitching in and making the day such a success.

I would also like to acknowledge both exhibitors and everyone who so generously supported our

2018 Specialty. We had a great entry, 19 dogs and 3 Baby Puppies. Our fund raising campaign

was very successful as was our 2018 raffle. Together with donated items and a larger than

expected rebate from the Hamilton club we made a profit on this event which will be reflected in

the September Treasurer’s report.

MINUTES OF THE PCOO ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

held Saturday, 23 June 2018 at the Ancaster Arena prepared and submitted by Walter McCarthy

The Annual meeting was attended by ourselves, Judy, Sandra and Ross, Kimberly and Lynn, and Barb. The others left early with other engagements. Last year’s minutes were distributed. Judy Maltby moved they be accepted as written. Seconded by Walter McCarthy The location and events for the 2018 Pomeranian Specialty were considered a success. The main complaint was the scheduling of the Pom Specialty judges was late and the dogs became restless waiting. Also there was an Obedience ring in the building beside us which led to some poms being unsettled with the orders shouted at the obedience dogs. The bright side of the situation was that our ring was always inside all weekend. The outside rings suffered through buckets of rain throughout the weekend. The entrants preferred the foreign judges for the show. The ladies specified that they would like a good looking foreign judge. We have observed that the Ontario judges appear to favour the usual same suspects and handlers when placing the dogs. The judges placed poms in group in all the regular shows. This was very nice for the pom people as poms have a hard time being recognised in the groups. Big rosettes are wanted for the wins. Similar to the Best Opposite rosettes. There was a discussion looking ahead to the 2019 show. The Hamilton Shows Jerseyville location was enjoyed by the entrants. There is interest in an earlier show before the winter pom coats begin to shed out. Fergus in April was suggested. Lindsay was discussed to encourage eastern breeders and it was agreed that before a Lindsay show was scheduled the pom breeders would have to be canvassed to determine if there was sufficient entries. LaVerne moved the meeting be adjourned. Seconded by Walter.

Following is the package handed out at the AGM. I have not included the agenda in the interest of saving space in the Newsletter.

Meeting called to order at 12.30 p.m. A package containing the AGM Agenda, Minutes of the 2016 AGM, the President’s, Secretary’s, and the Treasurer’s reports were tabled for review and discussion. Walter and Christine walked people through their reports. New Business Election results were presented by Larry Surtees, Election Chair. As there was only one person standing for each position the 2018-2019 was elected by acclamation. The new board will be President: Walter McCarthy Vice President: Jane Landry Secretary: Christine Surtees Treasurer: Roberta Malott Directors: Ontario East – Robert Gibson, Ontario North - Rita Smith Ontario West – Judy Maltby, Ontario Central - Annelies Davies

2018 Specialty

We discussed potential sites for the 2018. Although we are happy with the Kilbride show, the camping thus

year had increased to $150 for the weekend which some people feel it too expensive. The following shows

were mentioned as possible venues and we will check out their rebates, camping rates, etc,

Grey-Bruce Kennel & Obedience Club, Owen Sound, Ontario

Guelph & District Kennel Club, Fergus, Ontario

Hamilton Kennel Club, Jerseyville, Ontario

Burlington Kennel & Obedience Club, Grassie, Ontario

Scarborough Kennel Club Inc. Mono, Ontario

AI.1 Christine is to check the camping rates etc, for the about shows forward to the membership for

consideration.

Constitution and By Laws

Christine briefed people on her discussion with Mr. Bob Rowbotham re changes the club would like to

make.

AI.2 Christine to prepare draft for review by the Board.

Meeting adjourned at 1.00 p.m.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING – 23 June 2018

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

The Pomeranian Club of Ontario 2018 Year

We are pleased to be hosting the 2018 PCOO Specialty in Jerseyville this year. The location is central and the camping rates are more reasonable than last year. Thank you to all the members who have supported the club with door prizes, show prizes and the work taken to organize the show. A special thank you to our secretary, Christine Surtees, who has spent hours arranging the show details. We are pleased to have new members requesting to join the club. New breeders and show members help us all to fill the show entries and develop the Pomeranian bloodlines. Welcome to all new members. Any suggestions and ideas are always welcome. Our exposure to the public helps our Poms find new homes and develops awareness of our tiny companions.

Thanks again to everyone who helps our Pom Club grow.

Two people chose not to renew their memberships this year. A recent member Pam Secula and long-time member Marie Hueston decided to leave the club. We have three new member since the last report - Christine Colebeck of Woodstock became a member in March 2018 and I am in the process of preparing New Members Package for Brenda Brookes in Renfrew and Lana Smith in Ottawa. All three of these ladies are currently showing Pomeranians and bring new dogs into the Ontario Pom scene. Welcome - new member packages will be on their way shortly. There were no committees - other than the show committee - convened and there have been no board meetings since the last AGM.

We have the biggest entry this year since the 2013 Specialty held in Tillsonburg. It is great to see some new exhibitors with their dogs entering our Specialty as well as those who have consistently supported our Club throughout the years. A big thank you to everyone who answered our call for financial support by sponsoring individual classes and/or our Specialty fund. A complete list of sponsors can be found in the show catalogue and will also be included in the Specialty edition of the Newsletter. Unfortunately Larry and I are unable to attend this year as Larry managed to put himself in hospital with a back issue a couple of weeks ago. He is much improved but not yet allowed to load/unload and drive a motorhome! Many thanks to Susan Coulson who has transported all the stuff I had here in Almonte to the show site. Walter and LaVerne have stepped into the breach to take care of all on site activities – thank you very much guys - and I am sure they will welcome any help offered. We need people to help sell raffle tickets at the show site and to take lots of candid photos, at ring side, in the ring and the hospitality events I want especially to thank Judy Maltby. Those of you who know Judy and have attended our Specialties in the past know she is a very talented artist. Judy outdid herself this year and has made a number of the items offered as prizes. Larry and I will be thinking of you on Saturday and we wish all exhibitors, club members and guests a wonderful and successful day.

PCOO 2018 Specialty Report prepared and submitted by Walter McCarthy

The 2018 Pom specialty show went well. There was a delay with the judges arrival as they had not finished judging the previous group by Pom time. This was a repeat of Friday where we waited quite a while for the Toy group judge. The Irish judge for the specialty was gentle with the poms. He had a pleasant personality and chose Kimberly’s “Winston” special as Best In Pom Show to Kimberly's delight. The Irish judge was cheerful with a hint of blarney in his eyes. Some commented that he could be a leprechaun. The raffle brought in $180. The Hamilton club gave us a rebate of $384.61. The towels were a success. They were used in the photo settings by the official photographer. Brenda won the door prize towel. She also had her picture taken with the embroidered towel. LaVerne won the pom shoulder clip. She was pleased with it. Judy gave the picture to the judge and had her picture taken with the judge. The soft sided carry bag was won by Jan Maydon 613-256-7695. It was sent back to Ottawa with the Ottawa group for delivery. The Pomeranian clocks and cutouts were appreciated. There were lots of positive comments on Judy’s work. The Annual meeting was attended by ourselves, Judy, Sandra and Ross, Kimberly and her Lynn, and Barb. The others left early with other engagements. The location and events were considered a success. The main complaint was the scheduling of the Pom Specialty judges was late and the dogs became restless waiting. Also there was an Obedience ring in the building beside us which led to some poms being unsettled with the orders shouted at the obedience dogs. This was very nice for the pom people as poms have a hard time being recognised in the groups. Big rosettes are wanted for the wins. Similar to the Best Opposite rosettes.
