STARFFLEET has recently lost one of their most admired and lovable Admirals. Helen was and continues to be an inspiration to many. Her love of life and her love of Star Trek exemplifies the vision that Gene Roddenberry created.

Helen Pawlowski had joined STARFLEET in 1992 and has been very active in the organiza-tion. I met Helen when she was the Dean of STARFLEET Acade-my during the turbulent McGinnis administration. I had the idea of the College of Strategy & Tactics and I was pitching it to Helen and Bijo Trimble. Well at the time, Helen’s son was here in North Carolina and she was visiting and at that time I was stationed with the 82

nd Airborne Division at

Ft Bragg. Helen asked me to meet her half way so that we can meet her and I could hand her a hard copy of what my concept for the college proposal. Helen and I met at a parking lot at a Food Lion. I was not sure what to expect. Helen and I nev-er met before and I had never

seen a picture of her. Well When I met her, I saw a women who was short in statue, but her out-going and friendly personality was that of a giant. She cracked a joke before we even finished our introductions. It was during this time our bond started. We discussed many things, from our large families and our Polish her-itage. We did eventually go over the college concept. We kept in contact as the College proposal moved forward and then when I became the director, I kept in touch with her on a monthly ba-sis. My next meeting was in the win-ter on 1996 when I was asked to go to then FADM McGinnis resi-dence to meet with him and RADM Miller. It was then I met with Helen again and as the last time we met, she was full of life and jokes. She told me how much she loved classic Trek and at the time I was a Next Gen Fan with the Classic close behind. We talked about episodes and char-acters and then we talked about our chapters. Our third meeting was the IC 1996 in Oklahoma City. Helen always liked to talk about that IC. The first thing she loved about it was that STARFLEET Academy had many of the Academy Cours-es available for members to take right there on the spot and most would be scored and certificates awarded. The Academy also held a small graduation ceremony for those who completed OTS and OCC during the IC. The next was the dinner on Saturday night. You see the theme was pirates and she played the part, but for me

that was more difficult. I was the strict military minded, in my twenties etc., I really did not re-lax like that, but Helen had con-vinced me to get a costume and try to play the part, and so I did. But what she did not tell me is during the banquet, a contest for costume and skit was to take place. That was way out of my norm, but Helen insisted and she had help from my chapter Execu-tive Officer and Chief of Staff. Well for me I had to loosen up so the two of them handed me a beer as they knew I was not a drinker and only one beer would do it…well we had a blast and she never let me forget it! One thing I regret is that I have no pictures of us from the IC! For a time, when I had backed away from participation after the 1996 Fleet elections, I had lost contact with Helen for a few years. We talked once or twice trying to get me active again. But those few times, Helen was there for me as support during some life changes. But with my military career, we lost contact again. It was in 2000 when Helen again asked me to come back in an active mode and I eventually did. Once again with my deployment to Iraq in 2003, the chapter faded away and I lost contact with Hel-en. But once again Helen was there when I got back and helped me through another life changing events and also asked me to join her chapter as the Operations Officer. I agreed and again Helen and I talked regular-ly until my next deployment. We Continue on Page 14

that the chapter’s address is that of the Commanding Officer. With that said, the chapters new ad-dress is my address in Whiteville, NC. This also changes us from a Region 12 chapter to a Region 1 chapter. This change has already taken place and that is why you see the Region 1 logo vs the Re-gion 12 logo. I have spoken with both Regional Coordinators about this. Admiral Higdon is sorry to see us go, but he understands why this is taken place. Vice Admiral Ruth Lane is the Region 1 Coordinator. She wishes it was under different cir-cumstances, but she welcomes us into the Region 1 family with open arms. I know the SS TROU-BADOUR STATION will serve Region 1 and the RC as we did with Region 12 and Admiral Higdon. The Chapter Business Well where to start! The crew had decided two months ago to go with a chapter logo redesign. Well do to the changes in our region etc., We had to make a little change. All the publications such as the membership materials, promotion certificates, award certificates and flyers have been converted to reflect our new address and region. As for the chapter shirts. I had talked to the supplier that I had talked to previously about the logo changes and this is what we have for the Duty Uniforms: Continued on Page 5

Marlene has had to have procedures to address the problem and will be in a rehab facility after she gets out of the hospital. Letters and cards can be sent to her at: Marlene Miller C/O: St. Elizabeth Hospital Room 516 Boardman, Ohio 44512 USA I'm sure that she'll appreciate being flooded with cards, letters and well wishes. Marlene's sister-in-law is going to keep the Fleet Admiral appraised of her situation, and as soon as he has more information, he will pass it along. Any Academy course requests or exams that would have been sent to Marlene should be held back for now. The STARFLEET Academy Commandant is aware of what's happening with Mar-lene, so she'll be looking at how to best address things in Mar-lene's absence. Please keep Marlene in your thoughts and prayers. The Regional Business With the passing of our Com-manding Officer, there are some automatic changes that has tak-en place. Greetings everyone! It is with the saddest heart to inform the crew of the passing of our Dearest Commanding Officer and friend. As you all know al-ready, Helen passed on to the next adventure. I am sure she is sitting with James Doohan and Deforest Kelly right about now saying what a wonderful ride it was, while it lasted. Helen contin-ues to be in my heart and will always be my friend for ever last-ing time. A service was held for Helen at the village were her apartment was on 19 August, but sorry to say I was not cleared by the Car-diologist to travel that distance and it was the weekend we had to move our daughter Ashley to the dorms at Western Carolina University. I will be making a donation to the STARFLEET Scholarship Fund in Helen’s name. If you wish to con-tribute, please let me know and I will give you the instructions on how to do that. Before I get into the chapter busi-ness, I have additional bad news

The following are the “Casual “ shirts. These shirts are meant to be less formal for day to day wear. I am going to show the front of each department and only one of the back so you can get an idea. These are separate from the De-partment shirts that Security was talking about during the last issue of the newsletter. I asked ENS Nelson to put the department log-os on them that way the “concept” of a more department shirt is more visible. Remember each shirt is about $24 each unless I can order in a much larger bulk order. This does not include the Department, Region, STARFLEET and for some the Marine patches that are on the sleeves.

Now if you have a better idea or an opinion, then we are glad to hear it. But I do ask that if you are going to make an opinion not favorable, then please have a proposal for an alternative. Well I think I covered everything at this point and time. I know as we settle into Region 1, that we may need to make some ad-justments.

Thank you all for your input and assistance during this past month. I know we will continue to be a caring and hard working crew as we have in the past. Helen’s love of life and love of Star Trek will forever thrive in this chapter. The best way we as a chapter can truly honor her is to full fill the traditions and goals when she and a handful of STARFLEET members came together to form the Troubadour Shuttle. May the wind continue to be on our backs! Paul C. Dyl Commanding Officer

You know it is tough to loose a loved one. This I know through loosing my own mother and fa-ther. Even though I was an adult when these two events hap-pened, I still feel their loss quite keenly. Today, I feel I have lost another person, another parent… It is almost been a month since we received word of the passing of a friend and a fellow worker in our association, one whom I con-sidered precious and at the same time one who I depended on ad-vice to help me in doing the work that you entrusted me. Helen had tons of wisdom to share and I doubt she looked on her advice as wisdom. But it was valuable, none the less. My feel-ing is that she felt as young as she was old. It made her that much more special. I have known Helen since 1995, since the chapter I commanded was the Shuttle Shiloh, starting out as many of us back then, through the telephone. On a trip home, ironically to Rockford, as my family and I lived in Hender-son, Tennessee at the time, I met Helen personally, where we visit-ed the then Commander, STAR-FLEET, Dan McGinnis and the then Chief of Computer Opera-tions, Wayne Cavalier. That night, Helen, Dan and my family, had dinner at the Belleville, Illinois Cracker Barrel, where we wore our uniforms. I kept in touch with Helen over

the years, even the years as she 'attempted' to master the internet. But our main communications was through the phone. The next time I saw Helen was at the 2001

International Conference in Kan-sas City, where she was as feisty as ever. In 2009, after I became the Re-gion Twelve Coordinator, I asked her to fill the position of Honorary Vice Regional Coordinator, which was a way to honor her on staff and make her my 'chief' advisor. When the 2010 International Conference in Wagoner, Oklaho-ma occurred, I offered to pick her up and transport her, along with the scooter, to the site. She ac-cepted with the condition that she pay for the gas for the trip, which she did. We had a great time, as we talked, me having to talk loud-er so she could hear me. The first leg of the trip was made at lease two to three hours longer due to a massive traffic jam be-cause of road construction in I-44 west of St. Louis. I am reminded

that as we approached Se-quoyah State Park, the site of IC2010, after we had actually passed through Wagoner, I said, "We're almost there!" She would retort, "I bet we aren't." We got there soon than she expected but we were all relieved that that por-tion of the trip was over. The re-turn trip was not as long but it was most enjoyable to have her with us. Helen has served this associa-tion in various positions through-out her time in STARFLEET, in-cluding the position on the Re-gion Twelve staff. She helped at STARFLEET HQ, and was an instructor, director, dean, vice commandant and acting com-mandant with STARFLEET Academy. She created the initial classes for the Flag Officer's School. She wrote articles for the CQ and she was the founding commanding officer of the corre-spondent chapter based in the St. Louis area, for which she wanted to name after the late comedian Bob Hope. When that fell through she chose 'Troubadour' and made into a space station. Troubadour Station has struggle but at the time of her passing it is the largest chapter within the Twelfth Fleet! No doubt she will be honored and memorialized because of the Continued on Page 8

Continued From Page 7 incredible life she lead and the way she affected the lives whom she touched. I am proud to say she touched mine! Because of her unceasing service and duty to STARFLEET and Re-gion Twelve that I am honored to announce that the name of the Service to Humanity Award, a Region Twelve Individual 'Spot' Award which is bestowed upon any STARFLEET member who has devoted extraordinary time, energy, and/or resources to a charity or volunteer organization, or who has provided emergency care (medical or otherwise) to an individual/s during a traumatic situation, is hereby renamed the Admiral Helen Pawlowski Service to Humanity Award. And that was not the end of the honors STARFLEET bestowed upon Helen. The Admiralty Board, by unanimous vote, decided to change the name of the Lifetime Membership to the Helen Paw-lowski Memorial Lifetime Mem-bership. Linda Kloempken and Bjo Trimble were the first recipi-ents of the Pawlowski Lifetime Memberships. Besides this, there is an effort with those who were connected with her work with STARFLEET Academy to start a scholarship in her name. However because of the uncertainty of the awarding of any of our scholarships, you may contribute to the scholarship pro-gram in Helen's name. We miss Helen. I will miss her, not only for her advice and the confidence I had in her, but her friendship. She once said she had a second family and we are it.

STARFLEET is a little less today because of her passing. To that end on behalf of the Twelfth Fleet, it's chapters, Offic-ers and Crews, and our Region Staff, I offer our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the fami-ly and friends of Admiral Helen Pawlowski, as well to the Officers and Crew of Troubadour Station, and the region itself and the en-tire association we know as STARFLEET. She will be missed. She has been missed. We Grieve With Thee... IC2014 in Chicago… The big news for the region in-volved an announcement during IC2012 by International Confer-ence Committee Chairman Admi-ral Mark Anbinder, via “Sub-Space Communications” where he announced that the 2014 In-ternational Conference is being awarded to the city of Chicago, Illinois! PRACTICALLY RISA, the 2014 International Conference, will be held at the Pheasant Run Resort in the Chicago suburb or St. Charles, from Friday, August 8th til Sunday, August 10th, 2014. IC 2014 will also celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the creation of STARFLEET in 1974. Admiral Anbinder announcing the site of the 2014 International Conference during IC2012 in Memphis via Sub-Space Com Admiral Anbinder turned the presentation of IC2014 to me as the Chairman of the event. As I was overcome and stated to our CS, Fleet Admiral Dave Blaser,

“I'm speechless”, a special video show- Admiral Higdon during the announcement of the site for IC 2014 - Chicago casing the IC site, created by Colonel William “Junior” Hof, who serves as one of the three officers that put to-gether the bid for the Pheasant Run site. The other officer is Fleet Captain Eric Johannson. Region Twelve will Co-Host the event along with Regions One and Six. The chapters designat-ed as “Host Starships” include the USS Black Hawk, the USS BortaS, the USS Chicago and the USS Constellation, all Illinois Sector chapters of STARFLEET. Among the highlights of the site, I mentioned was the pools, one which is an indoor-outdoor pool that is kept open year round. They also have an indoor pool in which a Sunday Buffet is served nearby. I also gave an idea that STARFLEET HQ will be around a part of the resort where the out-door pool is situated, very close to where the break away groups will be held. This area is called the Courtyard, which has a ga-zebo if you want to relax. The Opening Ceremonies, Gen-eral Session, Banquet & Dance and the Closing Ceremonies will occur in the New Orleans Room while the break away sessions and the SFMC International Mus-ter will take place in a separate building called Gallery Hall. The Quartermaster and Vendor will be set up in a Room located in the hall leading from the Resort Lobby to the Tower Lobby. Top of the day to everyone in Region 12, I wish to express my condolenc-es to the family of our own Helen Pawlowski. I know she was a very long time friend, and she will be missed. This has been a blow to so many of us in Region 12. I was grateful that I got to watch the stream of the IC in Memphis. I really did enjoy everything that went on from beginning to end. Warren, you and your workers did a great job putting that IC together. So thank you very much for your hard work. I have been working on a sched-ule for young people in Region 12 to go to Space Camp. The is

after so much struggling to get someone to go. I just might have someone going. I will keep my fingers, and toes crossed that we will finality get a student to go. But I am not sure if I can get them to go soon, but only time will tell. Well that wraps it up for now... till next month. Hart over and out. *Note: This is the last R12 SVRC Monthly Status Report that we will be carrying due to the change in Regions.

Greetings once again! I hope eve-

ryone is doing good? Well as you

will see in his edition of the

newsletter, I have updated the

Department T-Shirts. Please

take a look when you get the

chance.

The Chief Medical Officer men-

tioned it in her report, but I want

to emphasize the importance of

safety and security. Not only be

safe when you are out and about,

but keep aware of the situation

around you. Halloween is coming

and there are many safety proce-

dures you can take. But also

think security. For example, stay

away from house or areas that do

not have proper lighting. These

are easy areas for someone to

hide. Have a whistle or some-

thing that makes aloud noise that

you can get to easily. Protect

yourself with a mace or pepper

spray if possible. Only Trick or

Treat in areas you know. Always

travel in a large group, the bigger

the better.

I have started my Officer Com-

mand College and it will be

turned in very shortly. I encour-

age everyone to take OTS and

OCC as a Minimum. My next

task will be to complete the Secu-

rity College. Remember, If your

interested in the Security De-

partment, you will need to com-

plete the STARFLEET Academy

Security College.

See you next time!

This year our daughter Ashley is embarking on her college adventure. She is go-ing to Western Carolina Uni-versity where she will be ma-joring in Motion Picture & Tel-evision Production. Maybe someday she will be making a new Star Trek movie. For physical fitness she is joining the fencing club. Would Sulu love that! Fall also ushers in fair season. Chapter Department Shirts

By ENS James Nelson

Greetings everyone. In my Chief Security Report from the last issue, I proposed the idea of Department Shirts for casual wear to show off not only our chapter but our department. The cost is the same as the regular chapter shirts approximately $24.00. So a down fall is if some one moves from one department to the next. But that is all on one’s point of view. Someone may want to get a collection of department shirts. I have displayed each depart-ment and would like your opinion. I changed the chapter logo that I showed in the last issue to reflect the new logo that shows our move to Re-gion One. I hope you like? I think next month I will ask Paul and a few others who may be interested to order a few shirts and see how they come out. If we can do this then I will follow-up with more infor-mation about the shirts etc. Until then…….. ENS James Nelson Chief Security Officer

Continued from Page 3 lost contact and this is the time Helen had her setbacks with her health. I was home on leave when I had found out about them and Helen told me she did not want to worry me while I was de-ployed. Well I thanked her for that thought but I told her that I was fine and that any more is-sues I wanted to know as soon as possible. You see Helen to me was one of my best friends. I had friends but I was picky and very selective when it came to best friends and Helen was just that. I could trust her with what I said, she respected my ways and yet she would tell me when I was right or wrong. It was between the two de-ployments when Helen asked me to be the Execu-tive Officer. Chapter mem-bership was low and she needed someone who had OTS and OCC completed. I told her I would, but that my involvement would be very limited due to another de-ployment. Well that deploy-ment took place and while deployed my membership had lapsed until I came home on leave when I contacted Helen and she had let me know. I took care of that before I had to return to the deployment and after my return I was appointed as the Executive Officer and with more time on my hands Helen and I talked on a weekly basis. She explained her vision and goals for the chapter and now the SS TROUBADOUR is one of the largest chapters. Helen cared about others, even those she never met or those she did not get along with. She has

Region 12 which started her roots with then Captain Helen Paw-lowski and a group of writers and artists who had sent out invita-tions to meet their group and they were willing to permit Captain Pawlowski to sit in on their meet-ing. After learning their general rou-tine, Captain Pawlowski wrote a short script about the effects of budget cuts on Picards’ Enter-

prise. The group had so much fun with it they asked Captain Pawlowski how they could become involved in the star trek fan world, too. The solution? Launch our own Shuttle. The result? The SS TROUBADOUR STATION. At first Captain Pawlowski tried to contact Bob Hope to see if they might use his name for the chapter but she received no reply so Captain Pawlowski cast about for a name that would indicate that they were formed to “Entertain the troops”-like Hope-but they had a less constricted format. The logo at the time was “The Stars R Us” and their stories and drawings focused more ex-clusively on Star Trek. The

group weighed in on their options and they settled in on launching their Shuttle from a chapter in Region 12 called the USS MORNING STAR NCC-4126, an Olympic-Class Hospital Transport under the commanded at the time by Fleet Captain Sherry Anne Newell. The group approached the USS MORNING STAR crew and requested to shuttle off of them. Thus on May 16, 1995; the Shuttle Troubadour was officially Continued on Page 19

many friends across FLEET that stretch around the world. One of those friends and I know this as a fact, was more than a friend, she was more like a daughter to Hel-en, that is Marlene Miller. Their relationship was not started off as close friends but with life changes, it brought the two to-gether in such a way, that can only be explained as a mother and daughter relationship. I can-not say how many times Helen

would tell me not to call at 7 pm on any given day. It was this time that Helen and Marlene would talk, and Helen would always tell me about the wonderful time she had with those calls and thru this relationship, I can say that it helped Marlene and I become better friends and it is all be-cause of one person, Helen Paw-lowski. Continued From Page 8 held on Bourbon Street. This is to a way the public and other can get to know STARFLEET and our various missions. Participants are going to be asked to wear Star Trek Costumes and Starfleet Uniforms will happen sometime during the Saturday Session. Also plans for local (Chicago land) TV, Radio and Press cover-age of our 40th Anniversary Cel-ebration is in the works. We will be coordinating this activity with the St. Charles Chamber of Com-merce and the resort. The video which was presented to introduce IC2014 can be found on YouTube for a short time (will be taken down soon) at http://youtu.be/ckpac7fQqbQ and you can join the IC2014 Face-book page at https://www.facebook.com/admiralhawk#!/groups/129551230522480/. Also join us on the web at http://ic2014.com. There will be more from Team IC2014, so stay tuned!!! The Fun from IC2012… You missed one h*** of an IC. Warren and crew put on one great party for STARFLEET (in which Marian and crew will try to out do for IC13 and we will do at IC2014). I was going to give you a blow by blow account, bagels & all, but decided to say that we had a blast. Rolando, who sat in the ECAB Meeting with me, enjoyed himself along with Ray Brown, our Regional Relay Officer and Chris Tolbert, our Recruiting & Retention Officer. Some for the important highlights of the IC were:

• The promotion of three of our brightest and best – Karen Higdon to the rank of Rear Admi-ral, Eddie Allen to the rank of Vice Admiral and Greg Trotter to the rank of Admiral. With the pro-motions of Eric, Jeff, Bea, Ray and myself, we have had a pretty good time this year as far as Flag Promotions go. Please join me in congratulating all our newly mint-ed Flag Officers for their just re-wards! • The awarding of several SFMC awards to units and Members of the 12th Brigade, including Honor award winners: Sword of Honor (Marine of the Year) – Josiah Smiddy; Shield of Honor (Leader of the Year) – Wade Hoover; Le-gion of Honor (Unit of the Year) - 225th MSG (DedEx). Please join me in congratulating all our 12th Brigade Award Win-ners!!! • There were a few decisions of the ECAB in which I can share with you at this time: 1. There was a vote to change how many STARFLEET Commu-niques members will receive. In-stead of 6 CQs a year the mem-bership will now receive 4 CQs a year on a quarterly basis. The CQ will also be changing from news-print format to a magazine format. The reasons for making this change included keeping current membership dues at the present level and to allow more time for the compositing and editing of the CQ. 2. The addition of language to the qualifications to run for the positions Commander and Vice Commander, STARFLEET. There is now a three year membership-in-good-standing clause where

anyone running for these offices must have been a member of STARFLEET uninterrupted for three years prior to their assum-ing office. 3. The elimination of STAR-FLEET Academy Colleges and Schools from the Membership Handbook. This was to allow for a more expedient change of the curriculum without having to ap-proach the Admiralty Board every time there was a need to make a change. Also many did not see for a need for such a listing the MHB because these are listed in various publications, as well as the website, of the Academy. The MHB now states you should check with the Academy for more information. 4. Of course, the naming of the Lifetime Membership in honor of Helen Pawlowski. You can watch some of the IC on USTREAM located at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/ic2012. STARFLEET Historian Just a few days before the publi-cation of this newsletter, the Commander, STARFLEET Fleet Admiral Dave Blaser made a change in the Office of the STARFLEET Historian. Blaser relieved General Wade Hoover of duty as the STARFLEET Histori-an and appointed yours truly as the new STARFLEET Historian. I have mixed feeling on this. I consider Wade a good friend and it has been a privilege and ex-treme pleasure in working with him as his deputy. However I Continue on Page 18

Twelfth Fleet and STARFLEET for yours truly. Traveling to Bran-son for the 2012 Region Twelve Summit with my friend, Eric Jo-hannson, viewing some of the deviation that was viewed there and then having an extremely enjoyable time at the Welk Re-sort. Then the trip to Memphis and IC2012 was a great time to say the least. And with the 2014 International Conference return-ing to the region, and plans for the upcoming years and months, it is going to be a busy and worth wild time for all the officer and crewmembers of the Twelfth Fleet. See you next month!!! *Note: This is the last R12 RC Monthly Status Report that we will be carrying due to the change in Regions.

Continued From Page 15 understand the situation with Wade and to my understanding he was close to leaving the His-torian's office anyway due to per-sonal and work commitments. We both wanted someone to succeed to the position who cared about the history and it's presentation. It is important that our goals we set out be carried out as closely as we can. But Wade really isn't going any-where. I have asked Wade, when he feels he is able, to ad-vise and assist me in the Histori-an's Office, in which he readily agreed to do. I look forward to this collaboration of our efforts toward gathering a more accu-rate history of STARFLEET. In the next few months I will be announcing via the fleet re-sources of the opening of posi-tion in both the office of the STARFLEET Historian and the office of the SFMC Historian (which I already held prior to my appointment as Fleet Historian), which are two distinct depart-ments of STARFLEET. I had al-ready announced during the In-ternational Muster that the office of the SFMC Historian would be opening up positions of re-searchers to help in the gather-ing of information toward a writ-ten history of the SFMC. I plan to do the same for the office of the STARFLEET Historian. I also plan to advertise for my replace-ment as Deputy STARFLEET Historian. Stay tuned for those announcements soon! We would appreciate a visit from anyone to these sites! Hello and Goodbye USS Pin-guin ??? I was going to take an opportunity here to welcome a new chapter within our region – the USS Pinguin – coming from the Fifth Fleet. But alas, their time was short for shortly after their transfer to the region the chapter decided to disband. While I can under-stand the reasons for the decom-missioning of the Pinguin, I wish we had done more to save the chapter. Some of the members of the Pinguin are staying with Re-gion Twelve as they will be form-ing the 233rd Marine Expedition-ary Unit with the 12th Brigade. Good luck to all that were part of the Pinguin and keep the faith! Final Thoughts… It has been a wonderful whirlwind of a couple of months within

Continued From Page 14 launched and then on February 16, 1998 the Shuttle Troubadour was officially commissioned as the SS TROUBADOUR STATION SFR-1201, an Abbe Class Space Station. As the years past, the crew be-gan to break up, some because of military service had transferred them, others left to join other chapter’s, and some just decided to leave. Some of the origi-nal members have risen through the ranks on their new ships and are produc-tive members. In order for the SS TROU-BADOUR STATION to re-tain its status as a viable chapter, now Admiral Helen Pawlowski and the remain-ing crewmembers decided to become a correspond-ence chapter, open to any otherwise unaffiliated STARFLEET members. As such the SS TROUBA-DOUR STATION was able to sur-vive. The SS TOUBADOUR STATION has launched one Shuttle from her bays, the Shuttle Hekla and later commissioned as the USS HEKLA located in Region 9 which is the country of Iceland. Years later the chapter decommis-sioned. The original CO, Fleet Captain Thomas Sigmundsson then started the USS THOR’S HAMMER NCC-74914 and is cur-rently serving as the Region 9 Coordinator. In March 2010, then Commodore Paul Dyl, who had served as the First Officer for a short period time before, was now home from his military deployment and re-

sumed the position of First Of-ficer and began a revitalization program of the chapter. Commo-dore Dyl began a recruitment drive and within 3 months, had recruited family, friends and any-one he could find that may be interested in Star Trek from a crew of 12 to a crew of 64. Com-modore Dyl also revamped the chapter with creating new logos for the chapter and departments, a new chapter t-shirt, new chap-ter handbook and the republica-

tion of the chapter newsletter. On July 28, 2012 our dearest Commanding Officer, Admiral Helen Pawlowski passed away at the age of 90. She served as the chapter Commanding Officer from May 16, 1995 thru July 29, 2012. Admiral Pawlowski’s love of life was inspirational and her legacy will live on for many years to come. The chapter continues to live the dream that Gene Roddenberry created and the inspiration and example that ADM Pawlowski lived by. Helen Pawlowski was born Feb-ruary 26, 1922 and past on July 29,

2012 at the young age of 90

years old. She joined STAR-FLEET in September 1991 and Commanded the Shuttle Trouba-dour Station and the SS TROU-BADOUR STATION from May 16, 1995 until her passing on 29 July 2012. At the age of 90, Helen was STARFLEET’s oldest serving Commanding Officer. She started off being a volunteer at the SFHQ as a clerk, helping run mail and some filing work. She served STARFLEET Academy as Interim Commandant, Vice Commandant,

Directors of the Flag Officer School, and Counselor

Course. She served and worked with STARFLEET in many other activities and ca-pacities. Region 12 made her Honorary Vice Regional Co-ordinator and Under her lead-ership the SS TROUBA-DOUR STATION was chosen as R12 Correspondence Chapter of the year for 2011. But thru all this, Helen’s two greatest loves was the Acad-emy and her chapter. Her family and friends will miss

her, but her aspect of life and love of Star Trek will be in inspiration for all and will be remembered for all time.

Effie Beaumont, but later dated Zoey Phillips for three years. Sisko had been so homesick dur-ing his first week at the Academy that he beamed home at 6:30 for

dinner to New Orleans, where his mother was still alive. Today Sis-ko worries about his elderly fa-ther's health and heart condition, and at one point felt helpless when it appeared he would in-deed die. The elder Sisko refus-es to leave his business and

make the long journey to DS9, so visits are few and far between. During his academy years Sisko was captain of the wrestling team in 2351, and served his sopho-more field study at Starbase 137. One cadet Sisko knew at SFA was Laporin, a Benzenite. A fellow Academy graduate was Cal Hudson, who shared his love of baseball and ambition to make captain by 30 and admiral by 40; they remained close until the Ma-quis crisis of 2370 split their loy-

Continue From Page 20 "joined the Prophets" and would return at some unknown time.) Psychological Profile, Medical File Extract: Report of Chief Medical Officer Julian Bashir, M.D. (acting in counselor's capacity) ***Starfleet Biographical File appended Following the tragedy of his wife's death fighting the Borg at Wolf 359, Sisko entered a dark period for three years at Utopia Planetia and very nearly resigned from Starfleet rather than take the Deep Space Nine assignment — until an encounter with the Bajo-rans' "Prophet" aliens and the discovery of their wormhole jump-started his healing and set him on an ongoing journey in that role, energizing his life once again. Moreover, his one-time ambitions to make admiral as soon as pos-sible have yielded to his realiza-tion that he's more suited to mak-ing decisions work than just mak-ing them — a prime reason for his success as a "builder" at DS9 and for Bajoran-UFP relations, along with defending against ex-ternal threats such as the Domin-ion, the Maquis, and foreign pow-ers. Sisko is very much proud of his New Orleans upbringing, where his father was a gourmet chef and insisted the family dine to-gether to try out his new dishes. Sisko had worked summers in his father's restaurant, simply called Sisko's, where he had a job by age 15. Along with his brothers he has a sister, who lives in Portland, Ore.; the boys had to pick vegetables in their family garden as young-sters. He had a crush on one

alties. Another friend is now the captain of the U.S.S. Venture; another is the Tholian ambassa-dor at DS9. As a "raw cadet" he also met Cur-zon Dax, a joined Trill and Feder-ation official who became his mentor through many years and assignments; when the two first met on Pelios Station, a woman named Anastasia was somehow involved. A perpetual womanizer, Curzon joined him as a first-rate carouser at least until Sisko's late 20s, well after Jake's birth. Cur-zon had attended his wedding and wild bachelor party as well. They toured the Cliffs of Bole to-gether, often visited Risa, and he once bet he and Hudson's dom-jot play against two Zakdorn at Pelios Station. Sisko met his future wife Jennifer on Earth immediately at Gilgo Beach after his Academy gradua-tion in 2354, and they soon grew serious about marriage. They once shared a trip to the Mazurka Festival on New Berlin with the Hudsons; ironically, Gretchen Hudson died within the first year of Sisko's stint on DS9. After Jake's birth, the men recalled their best family trip ever was camping on Itamish III. Sisko and Curzon served some months on the U.S.S. Livingston. He was a veteran of the last UFP-Tzenkethi War during his tenure as lieutenant and lieutenant com-mander under Capt. Leyton on the U.S.S. Okinawa. Leyton pro-moted him in rank to become his first officer, and helped nurture his career beyond a basic interest in engineering and ship design. Sisko's next assignment, on the Saratoga, came to an abrupt end in early 2367 at Wolf 359, where his wife was killed amid their Continued on Page 22

filled the prophecy in a different way. The incident left him more open and reflective about other prophecies regarding the "Emissary," whose arrival is now celebrated annually as the Ha'mara. He sat in for the ailing Bareil during the secret Bajoran-Cardassian peace talks on DS9, but refused Kai Winn's later re-quest for Starfleet Security troops or aid during her hunt for fugitive

Shakaar, based on the Prime Directive. Sisko does have a temper and is usually unswervable when his mind is made up. He carries a small scar on his lower lip from the impact of a ring where Cur-zon decked him after he took on an Argosian lieutenant. As a jun-ior officer on VIP escort, he once slugged a visiting ambassador for sexually harassing a female ensign. When perturbed in sur-prise he often utters an odd yip-ping sound. He initially butted heads with Kira and Odo, including a case where she went over his head to Star-fleet, but he grew to value their opinions and abilities as time passed. Sisko has stood by Kira during her battles with the Bajo-ran Provisional Government and been aware of her discomfort at his dual role as her religion's "Emissary." Likewise, he has de-fended Odo's performance from

Continued From Page 21 cabin's debris and he and Jake barely escaped. (A reunion with Jennifer was bittersweet when the short-lived encounter oc-curred in the mirror universe after he was forced to replace his counterpart, the assassinated leader of the Terran Rebellion, in talking her out of working on a deadly project for the Alliance there. This doppelganger also lured Jake over a year later to coerce Sisko in helping build that universe's Defiant for the rebels.) Leyton, later an admiral, nominat-ed Sisko for the DS9 post when it came open upon the Cardassian withdrawal, but he took it without conviction, still not over his wife's death; his displeasure turned more solid when his send-off came from Capt. Jean-Luc Pi-card, who was kidnapped and for a time transformed by the Borg to lead the Wolf 359 assault. While considering a resignation to escape the post, Sisko consid-ered directing construction of or-bital habitats on Earth — the field of astrionics he was asked to teach at the University of Vast-eras in Sweden. Instead, Sisko not only decided to stay but con-vinced Bajorans and Promenade merchants like Quark to stay. Sisko's comfort level in his role at DS9 and as a religious icon to Bajor has gradually developed as he's grown comfortable in both roles. Dukat once called him the most joyless and least vulnerable human he's met — a compliment that was eventually rescinded. Torn between the important joint subspace relay project with Car-dassia and the looming chance it might be a foretold catastrophe of Bajoran prophesy, he went ahead with a risky save that not only allowed the relay to work but ful-

past criticism by Starfleet regu-lars, and refused to desert him more than once. It is certainly with Dax that Sisko has the most history. He still calls her Curzon's "old man" nickname and continues their friendship as one of many years, despite Dax's new outward form — a rare break for Trills who usually are barred from such reassociation. He and Dax lost touch after Jennifer's death early in 2367; Curzon slow-ly slid into death and Dax was joined to Jadzia later that year. He hated to see her go to be with the Meridians, but unlike Curzon, he knew she'd thought it through. He never thought he'd get used to the "new Dax," but he threat-ened to turn Trill society upside-down by revealing the Joran scandal after the long quest with Bashir to save Jadzia's life. After taking the risk of embodying the murderous Joran for Dax's zhian'tara, he counseled her not to let Curzon manipulate her again in Odo's form. In return, Dax may have a latent attraction to him, since under the effects of Lwaxana Troi's Zanthi fever, she can't keep away from him. Sisko has long shared his love of baseball with Jake, aided by a holo-program he brought to DS9. Early on he was wary of losing personal time with him to the de-mands of work, and at first banned his friendship with the Ferengi boy Nog until he got to know him better. The landmarks of Jake's aging often leave him confused or anxious, as when he first dated. He knew Jake was writing, though he'd try to hide it, but Sisko was not ready to let him become a matchmaker and was miffed that his private life was so well known before he even met Kasidy Yates. Still he and the freighter captain did hit it off — Continued on Page 23

threw himself into the project of building by hand and flying an ancient Bajoran solar-sail craft with Jake with a zest not seen since he built Jake's nursery — and wound up proving a Bajoran legend about early contact with Cardassia. His love of baseball includes a holo-program of famous stars, including his hero Buck Bokai, and a baseball kept on display on his desk; when playing, he's a right-handed pitcher. He also keeps up with soccer, but he has no bluff in poker and is out-classed by O'Brien and Bashir in darts. He does play 2-D and 3-D chess, often with Dax. Befitting the crossroads culture of his command, he's been reading up on the Ferengi Rules of Acquisi-tion as of his third year on the station, and hosted a Gratitude Dinner during the same-named Bajoran festival in 2371. Professional Assessment: Re-port of Starfleet Command Evaluation Board Sisko has been an exemplary commander in the new hot spot at DS9, although at times he has shown a streak of stubborn inde-pendence that has defied orders yet carried the day in the long run. He disobeyed direct orders to stay at DS9 during the Romu-lan-Cardassian covert invasion of the Dominion, and risked the De-fiant to retrieve Odo anyway; at another time he delayed delivery of a Jem'Hadar youth until he made his escape, trusting in Odo's belief the boy could be raised against his genetic pro-gramming to fight. In still another instance, he liberally interpreted the word evacuate during the Bajoran coup threat to delay the withdrawal of his forces. When trapped in the 21st centu-ry's Bell Riots, he risked his life to

Sis-ko later risked shooting a then-allied Klingon ship to rescue her freighter shortly before the alli-ance breakup. Aside from Yates, Sisko's roman-tic life since Jennifer's death had only included Fenna, a telepathic

psychoprojective alter ego of the Halanan woman Nidell Seyetik in 2370. Sisko maintains a healthy recrea-tional life, led by his inherited love of cooking, especially Cajun, and occasionally prepares a hands-on meal for the staff; an old recipe for Creole shrimp is how he finally got to know Jake's onetime girlfriend Marta, his po-etry and dom-jot talents. He also cooks Hungarian food when in a good mood. His usual drink on duty is coffee — more specifically the Klingon variety, raktajino — especially first thing in the morn-ing; even Dukat knows about it. Kira could set her watch by it dur-ing his first year. Sisko collects ancient African art and after two years finally brought it to DS9. In 2371, Sisko

assume the identity of premature-ly killed riot namesake Gabriel Bell and even took a bullet in the shoulder to preserve the timeline after he and Doctor Bashir's acci-dental arrival. Sisko has also made a bit of history in 2371 as the first sponsor of a Ferengi ca-det to Starfleet Academy, Rom's son and Jake's friend Nog — but not before putting the boy to the test. While Sisko's direct intervention to rescue Cardassia's civilian De-tepa Council may have been questionable with Klingons near-ing Cardassia Prime, along with the unauthorized use of the cloaking device, his heavily re-armed station helped persuade Gowron that division among Al-pha Quadrant powers is exactly what the Dominion Founders want. Sisko has risked his life on more than one occasion in the line of duty, including working from the Cardassian War Room to re-trieved the Defiant when stolen by Tom Riker of the Maquis, then negotiating for the release of hos-tage Kira, the ship and its Maquis crew in return for surrendering their leader without the custom-ary death sentence in store. He was also ready to self-destruct the Defiant rather than let it start another war with the Tzenkethi as part of a Dominion Founders sab-otage. UPDATE: Psycho-medical File, CMO J. Bashir reporting SD 50500 As times have grow tense at DS9, Captain Sisko has risen to the challenge. With only the help of Odo and Nog he foiled a mar-tial-law coup on Earth led by Ad-miral Leyton in mid-2372, even though it pit him against his Continue on Page 24

turned from her six-month sen-tence for aiding the Maquis — about the same time as his pa-gh'tem'far visions began. The intimacy and its consequences in hindsight have appeared to have little effect on his command abil-ity, other than in a positive way. AUTOMATED FILE REPORT: Agent X. Dulmer, Temporal Investigation SD 50200 Upon review of the customary evidence and interviews of all subjects involved by this agent and Agent Lucsley, it is our de-termination that no lasting con-tamination in this timeline result-ed from Sisko's accidental use of the Bajoran Orb of Time to visit 2267 and the NCC-1701, J.T. Kirk commanding. My only regret on this trip is in not visiting more of this station, which I have heard so much about. ADDENDUM: Adm. Charles Whatley, Starfleet Command SD 50500 What do I say about Ben Sisko? First he and his crew are deco-rated for retrieving a new and fairly intact Jem'Hadar cruiser, and then he goes and starts hav-ing these odd Bajoran "visions" and postpones — maybe even sinks for good — the very Feder-ation admission for Bajor that he's worked for five years. Not to mention his run-in again with the Temporal Investigations boys, after his run-in with the time-hopper of all "time," JTK. Any other officer would have been yanked for that, or at least reassigned, but I have a hunch about Ben. I also have a hunch that any sudden action by this "secular" authority regarding Ba-jor's Emissary will not be re-ceived well by the locals.

Continued From Page 23 longtime mentor and senior of-ficer; he formed an uneasy part-nership with the Jem'Hadar to subdue rebels trying to use an-cient Iconian doorways; and he led the team that unmasked the Changeling double of Gowron's top aide Martok. And I must say he has grown increasingly comfortable as Ba-jor's Emissary, especially since he had to "fight" for the role of religious icon from well-intentioned poet Akorem Laan later in 2372. This episode prob-ably best prepared him for the experiences of a year later, when a post-neural shock helped the captain discover the ancient lost holy city of B'hala on Bajor after 20,000 years, and to seeing cryp-tic vi-

sions of the future. Now that this doctor can reflect from a dis-tance, I am not sure what was more shocking: that without Jake's intervention to authorize corrective treatment he would have sacrificed his life to contin-ue, that he called off Bajor's UFP admission based on a vision, or that he finally has Kai Winn's re-spect. To the surprise of no one, and just as he had promised her, the captain resumed his relationship with Kasidy Yates when she re-

Captain Benjamin Sisko

Despite our earlier choice to take him off the mission, I must also commend Sisko for his handling

of the Eddington affair and the virtual end to Maquis operations that brought. And yes, his covert team sent to check out whether Gowron had been replaced by a Changeling was well done, and likely helped set up the current armistice.

I suppose the fact that his psy-chographic profile is now re-quired reading for Dominion Vor-ta field supervisors means some-thing.

It is an honor and a privilege to personally invite you to the STARFLEET International Conference 2013, to be held at the beautiful and luxurious MCM Elegante Hotel in the heart of Dallas, Texas on August 1-4, 2013. We have a lot of surprises in store for those in attendance, in addition to all of the wonderful things you’ve come to expect from an International Conference! The theme for this IC is "The Year of the Phoenix", as 2012 is supposed to be the year the world comes to an end. From the ashes, the phoenix will arise, reborn. As Gene Roddenberry was often referred to as the Great Bird of the Galaxy (which was also referred to in the Star Trek: New Frontier books by Peter David) and the Phoenix was the name of Zefram Cochrane's ship in Star Trek: First Contact, we felt it would be a fitting theme for this 2013's International Conference. Information will be added to the website as it becomes available, and we strongly encourage you to keep checking with us as 2013 approaches — we’ll be posting some very exciting information between now and then. In the meantime, if you are planning on attending IC2013, we suggest that you take this opportunity to lock in the early registration rates by printing your information on the downloadable registration form and re-turning it to us with your full payment to the address provided below: IC 2013 STARFLEET P.O.
