Check out the Social Committee update in this issue of The Eagle’s Eye. Janis

Gentile, Meghna Bansal and the Tanski’s do a great job of putting together a

wide variety of activities for one and all. Are you curious about trying yoga?

Well, you can try it at our Owner’s Clubhouse on Saturday mornings for just $5 per

session! No long term commitment – what a deal!

You’ll find lunches, brunches, picnics and more. Some of the events require an

RSVP so that the committee makes sure there is enough capacity as well as food and

beverage. In those cases, I know the organizers would

sincerely appreciate early responses from attendees. It’s

fun to organize events when folks respond

enthusiastically. Not so much fun when last minute

responses make you scramble.

And, finally, it wouldn’t be the August edition of The

Eagle’s Eye if I didn’t issue my annual reminder to be

especially careful driving through the neighborhood

during the early morning hours. The same young

residents who got used to a few months of sleeping in

are now getting up early and often making their way to

the bus pickup spot half‐awake. Be careful out there!

When Angela Hein was first approached totake over as president of White EagleElementary PTA she declined.

“When I asked my husband what he thought he said itmight be too much for me to take on,” said the mom oftwo. “But when the PTA couldn’t find anyone else Ithought I needed to do this. Everything happens for areason and there was an empty spot waiting for me.”

Angela, who lives on Winberie Court, admitted shewas a little overwhelmed when she learned how muchwork she would have to do, but was grateful out goingpresident Joni Becks had done so much to help streamlinethe business side of things.

One of the first things Angela did was to make sure shehad a good executive committee behind her made up ofother White Eagle friends. She’d never been on the PTAboard before, but had served on the Parent DiversityAdvisory Committee.

“It’s important to get on with each other,” she said.“It’s the friendships that make it successful.”

Angela, who has accounting background, says she’s avery organized person who loves working withspreadsheets.

“I see my role as more of a management position,” sheexplained.

One of the biggest challenges this year’s PTA faces isattracting more volunteers.

“The dynamics have shifted,” she said. “These days it’smore likely that both parents will be working. I wantpeople to know we still encourage them to be PTAmembers even if they don’t have the time to volunteer.Whenever I used to hear someone talk about the PTA, Iwould cringe because I thought it meant I had to volunteerto be involved. That is so far from the truth. Weunderstand family comes first.”

Having said that, Angela wants to reach out to attractparents who may not have been involved before.

“With so many different cultures in our school if youreach out you get to meet so many wonderful people,” shesaid.

To help grow the organization, Angela has instigated afew changes this year. Meetings will now take place in theevenings with child care available to accommodate thosewho cannot make mornings.

“We are working with the Waubonsie Valley Key Club,”she said. “We are using their gym for meetings so thatstudents can look after our children thus creatingvolunteer hours for them.”

Another new initiative is for more studentrepresentation at PTA meetings, starting with theCommunity Service Projects that each grade levelparticipates in.

“We would like the students to report on the successof each service project,” she said. “We are also going toinvite students to participate at our meetings to make suretheir voices are heard. I have heard from many studentsthat they would like to be a part of the process.”

The PTA makes an enormous impact on the schoolbudget, providing things like class parties and ice creamsocials which would not happen without their help.

This year’s W.E. Gives Back fundraiser in October willbe centered around superheroes and will include a carnivaland prizes for highest class participation.

Angela’s daughter Laura, seven and six-year-old sonGus, are excited that they will see more of their momaround school.

“Because I do not work outside of the home, theythink I don’t have a job,” she said. “This will show them Ihave responsibilities outside too and provides them with avaluable lesson.”

Meet the White Eagle teacher who is asbusy at home as he is at school

Matthew Johnson is fighting fit and raring togo as school starts up again this month. TheWhite Eagle Elementary PE teacher is

about to start his second year working with all gradesacross the school.

“White Eagle is an awesome community and wehave an awesome school,” he said.

“From Mr. K. (White Eagle’s principal TimothyKrahenbuhl) through teachers and teachers’ aids, it’s agreat group of people to be around. Their passion forteaching spreads through the halls. I look forward togoing to work every day.”

During the summer Mr. Johnson welcomed a newaddition to his family with whom he lives in Yorkville. His wife Kelly, a reading teacher, gave birth to Teaghan,a sister for four‐year‐old Brayleigh and two‐year‐oldRheed. As if that didn’t keep him busy enough, he’s alsoworking two jobs.

“I grew up in a farming family in Plano,” heexplained. “As a kid I was constantly on the go.”

Although he follows the District 204 curriculum, Mr. Johnson believes in focusing on skills basedphysical education so children can improve individually. They start learning these in kindergarten beforelearning to work together as they go through the school.

White Eagle also offers an intermural program where children play team games like ground hockeyand basketball, refereeing themselves.

“They get to learn how to communicate with one another and how to include everyone,” he said. “MyPE program is designed so everyone feels included every day.”

Mr. Johnson developed his love for sport while at school.“I was always very active,” he said. “Later

I ran track and was the cross‐country teamat Elmhurst College. As a child I loved historyand thought I wanted to teach that, but I hadthis awesome PE teacher, Mr. McNamarawho put me on course to do that instead.”

Mr. Johnson loves to run although headmits the older he gets the harder it is onhis knees. He also plays soft ball, golf andenjoys hiking. He’s encouraging his ownchildren to stay fit with daughter Brayleighalready a keen gymnast.

“Being a PE teacher is the very best job Icould have,” he said. “I get to be active all dayand the time just goes by so fast. I couldnever be a classroom teacher, I would justfeel too contained.”

NEW Year... NEW StartWhite Eagle Elementary welcomes a sense ofrenewal at the beginning of the school year

Anew school year means newstaff and new programs forthe children of White Eagle

Elementary. The school is welcoming anew full-time interventionist, an EnglishLanguage Learner teacher and apsychologist, as well as new classteachers. No one could be more excitedabout the new year than PrincipalTimothy Krahenbuhl who said: “There’s awonderful sense of renewal; that’s the great thing abouteducation. It’s the opportunity to start fresh and new, bringingon new staff members who are excited to start teaching.”

Mr. K. is starting his fourth year as head of the school whichhas around 550 pupils. He’s one of just six male elementaryschool principals in District 204.

“I like the children’s enthusiasm at this age, they want to tryto do things” he said. “I always wanted to be one to encouragechildren.”

Children and parents can expect to see three main changesthis year — Next Generation Science, increase in a positiveculture and more support for children with social and emotionalneeds.

Following direction from the district, the focus on sciencewill be encouraging children to use their 21st century criticalthinking skills. This will include problem solving where studentsof all ages will create a hypothesis and work together to prove itin teams.

“In the past the district would send kits for scienceexperiments, looking for specific results,” said Mr. K. “This ismore inquiry based, which means children should be more opento things they are interested in.”

The aim is for a broader range of students to think ofthemselves as scientists.

“We are being more proactive in using language andactivities that would cause gender stereotyping,” he said. “Wehave done excellent STEM activities for a while.”

Every member of staff and the PTA will be involved inincreasing the positive culture of the school by becomingchampions of the students.

“It means we will be intentional about being encouragingand welcoming to them,” Mr. K. explained.

For the first time White Eagle Elementary will have a full-time psychologist on staff, who will work with individual childrenas well as running classes in topics like friendship and bullying.

“There is more of a need globally for this kind of supporttoday and in District 204 we are responding by providing help forthose children,” he said.

A full-time interventionist will visit each grade every day togive children who need it help with reading and math. It ishoped children of all abilities will benefit with tailor-madeassistance for their individual needs based on data collected.

Classes begin on August 21st.

Fond Farewell A popular White Eagle family is moving back home

It’s time to say goodbye to Julie Mansfield and herfamily who have lived on Palmer Court since 2008. TheMansfield’s are heading back to California to seek new

opportunities after Andrew’s job was eliminated. Althoughthey’re excited about living closer to family, they’ll be sad toleave all the friends they made in the neighborhood.

“Andrew and I were born and raised in SouthernCalifornia. We moved to Naperville in 2008 for a banking jobopportunity for my husband,” Julie explained. “We didn’t haveany kids at the time so we thought we would give the Midwesta try. The winters were rough at first, but we adjusted. Alongthe way we had our two amazing children Brady, eight andCooper, four. We missed our families terribly but we built agreat life with the love and support of many friends andneighbors.”

Julie became involved with the White Eagle children’scommittee and soon became an invaluable member organizingparties and events.

“Kristina Pelligrini and Kristen Liyeos gave me theopportunity to run the Halloween party for the subdivision. That kickstarted my passion for organizing parties andvolunteering,” Julie said. “In fact, that trickled over into theschool where I was in charge of the school carnival and otherschool events. I finally got to a point in my life where I wascontent where I was.”

But just when things were going so well, Julie got a callfrom her husband that would change everything.

“On one random Thursday, my husband called me andsaid his position was eliminated from the bank. He told me, it’stime to go home,” Julie said. The family is moving to Temecula,CA, about one hour from San Diego.

“We bought a house in the same subdivision as mybrother, my cousins, my mom, my aunt... so we are excited!”said Julie “For the past 10 years that I have lived here, I havewanted to move back to California to be with family. Now thatit is here, I’m truly sad. I will miss this place that I have calledhome for the past 10 years. I will miss this beautifulsubdivision. I will miss my friends that I have made. Thank you,White Eagle, for all the great memories that I will cherishforever. But this is not goodbye...I will be back to visit!”

We wish the Mansfield’s all the best on their newadventure, you’ll be missed by all your White Eagle friends.

Her entire body trembled as he moved closertowards her. The hairs on her arms stood up togreet him as the smell of his cologne tickled hernostrils. Her pink painted toenails may have beenanchored in the white sand but her head was inheaven….

It’s amazing what junk you’ll read in the

summer. For me it’s pretty much like TV

at Christmas. I wouldn’t dream of

watching a single Hallmark movie from January

to November, but as soon as December hits, all I

crave is predictable romances set

in snowy lodges with roaring fires

and cups of hot chocolate all

round.

I’m really not sure why

summer books are even designed

to be light and easy to read. Many

people have more time off or go

away on vacation. Surely that

would give them more time to

digest a particularly heavy tone?

Just because the weather is

heating up, it shouldn’t cause your brain to melt.

I find having a Kindle really helps me read

whatever trash I want in the summer. First of all, I

don’t have to go through the embarrassment of

anyone seeing what I have in my basket if I do a

sweep around the shelves of Anderson’s or

Barnes and Noble. Being spotted with a cart of

chips and chocolate in Jewel is nothing compared

to the feeling of condemnation from a friend

about to pay for Enlightenment Now: The Case

for Reason, Science, Humanism and Progress

while I’m thumbing through My One True Love.

My Kindle means not only can I read

anywhere, but I don’t have to hide a trashy book

behind something more socially acceptable.

Sadly, you don’t have to travel far to find book

snobs. The worst are members of book clubs who

are always telling me about some political,

historical or anthropological work they have just

had a fascinating discussion about. Personally, I

don’t really want to discuss the books I read, or

even mention the titles out loud, because I’m the

first to admit they’re not going to teach me

anything.

What frothy summer literature offers is pure

escapism and something to take your mind off

doing the ironing or writing a

column. They’re full of

opportunities to think “why did

she do that?” and “well of course

they’re going to end up together,

anyone can see that,” but it’s fun to

see how they actually get there.

A book that demands

contemplation and consideration

is often more difficult to read. I

don’t want to have to mull over

one point before moving onto the

next. I want instant gratification, so that when I’m

reading all I see is a movie running through my

mind. I want to be transported to Martha’s

Vineyard (a popular literary spot it seems) or a

Greek island.

Finally, the day she had planned for her wholelife was here. The lace on the hem of her dressskimmed over the sand as she began walking intothe sunset. A gentle breeze played with hergossamer veil tickling the tendrils of hair whichhad been casually swept up into a knot on the backof her neck. She was about to become Mrs. TroyCarter and she couldn’t be happier…h

There is a flurry of back‐to‐school

excitement in the air, but for us

gardeners we have up to three more

months to enjoy and improve our outdoor

surroundings.

I will be focusing on improving as I was

either away or distracted by the joys of

grandparenting (Addy, Alex and Wyatt) for much

of June and July. When I returned from a visit

with my son and his family in Arizona, my

gardens were a science experiment in survival. I

was surprised to see geraniums, heuchera (coral

bells), lilies and canna blooming away with no

help from any mortals. But there were a few

fatalities in my pots of petunias, impatiens and

euphorbia in spite of using potting soil with

moisture beads. Good to know which ones I can

count on and that I really do need some help

watering.

So, in August I will be replacing the dearly

departed with mums and the bleeding heart,

daylilies and iris that I have yet to divide and

transplant. I had been wondering where the

extras would go and now it is painfully obvious.

Some areas will be planted with bulbs in the fall.

Remember that containers usually need to be

updated every few weeks. A plant or two may

need to be replaced by something with more

vigor and the color scheme changes from spring

to fall, too. I love the pastels of spring, but it’s

hard to resist the more vibrant colors of summer.

And in fall, even a touch of orange and red (my

least favorite colors) have their place in my

gardens, playing nicely with purple which I love.

Keep fertilizing annuals in the ground and in

your pots. Perennials and roses need to start

getting ready for their long winter’s nap, so don’t

fertilize them. Most flowers need to be

deadheaded (spent blooms removed). If they

look leggy, cut them back. Chances are they will

flower again in September.

I leave my echinacea (coneflowers) alone for

the birds to enjoy the seeds all winter. Keep

weeding. Please pay attention to the thistles!

Any thistles you have will surely find a way to get

their seeds to my gardens.

Next month I will be writing about the joys of

joining a garden club. Fall fever strikes most of

us and joining a garden club may satisfy the need

to do something new, learn something new and

make some new friends, too!

Your Health and...YouBy Patty Minta, RDN, LDN

White Eagle Resident

Live the OrganicLifeThe first day of school is

quickly approaching, and ourschool district is continuing

this year with their food serviceprovider: OrganicLife. Their focusis on bringing scratch cooking andhealthy options but also, excitingfood that our children will want toeat. OrganicLife meals are based on“preparing food using basicingredients rather than buyingprepared meals.” The menus forthe 2018‐2019 year have not yetbeen released, but the menus fromlast year showcase foods that ourchildren like, made in healthierways. (www.organiclifeusa.com)

Our high schools receiverestaurant‐quality meals withOrganicLife’s signature food court‐style of choices. OrganicLife’s foodservice offers a daily special andalso a variety of other itemsincluding salad, pasta and pizza, and additional items such assandwiches, kebobs, falafel andchicken nachos. Middle schoolshave similar options on a morelimited rotation. The elementaryschools have a daily offering andalso one or two options.

Our school district states thatroughly one‐third of the studentpopulation purchases lunch on adaily basis, which means it isnecessary to offer healthy, appealing choices for our students. It is important to give our childrenguidelines on what to choosewhen buying lunch. Choose thehealthiest entrée possible, includea veggie and a fruit, keep sweetsto a minimum (making it a treatinstead of a large part of the meal)and choose water instead of soda.

The availability of food service is agreat plus in our school district, but most of our children do notpurchase lunch every day, so weneed to think about soundprinciples for packing thoselunches.

1. Arm yourself with the rightsupplies such as an insulated lunchbag/pack, small ice packs, insulated stainless steel thermosand reusable containers.2. Have a meal‐planning day witheveryone and make lists of thefoods they prefer to eat, includingone veggie and one fruit at eachmeal. Include leftovers, quesadillas, wraps and “pinwheels”, salads, hummus, yogurt, soup, etc.3. Enlist the children’s help inpreparing and packing. Theprocess of planning and preparingmeals is a great educationalexperience and gives plenty ofopportunity for math skills, taskplanning and organization. Olderchildren can prepare tuna orchicken salad, or wraps, whileyounger children can count outfruit, veggies or pretzels intocontainers.4. Have a good reusable waterbottle so that they can stayhydrated and don’t gravitatetoward the vending machine.

There are many websites that givegreat ideas for creative and healthypackable school lunches. A good

healthy lunch is an essentiallearning tool for our children. Keepthem fueled during the day withthe most nutritious foods, and theywill be able to do their best in

As I’ve done every August for several years,

this article outlines the basic information

needed to kick off the school year and

gives you ways to make sure you’re up to date on

what’s happening at Waubonsie. The sheer number of

events and activities at Waubonsie can seem

overwhelming, so the premise of this is to inform

those of you that are new, and others that might want

or need a refresher on how to stay informed on

everything Waubonsie.

The first thing to do is go to the Waubonsie

website (http://wvhs.ipsd.org/) and go to the bottom

of the page to sign up your email address. When you

do, you’ll be sent an email asking you to confirm your

information. After doing so, you’ll get weekly,

sometimes daily, updates on what’s going on in the

Warrior community. This will help you stay informed

and give you the opportunity to take part in several of

the activities that are currently happening.

WVTV is also a great way to stay in touch with

events, and a fun way to stay connected. They make

fun videos that you can follow on You Tube or through

the home page at Waubonsie, or simply go to The Beat

at Waubonsiemedia.org. This is the student’s splash

page which has articles written by and for students. If

you have twelve minutes, I highly recommend

watching the LipDub on You Tube, it’s incredible.

Twitter users can

also keep informed

about events and

current updates such

as school closings and

other emergency

alerts. @WVHSStipp

communicates tweets

directly from

Waubonsie Valley

Principal Mr. Jason

Stipp and

@WVHSCom is where

to find Waubonsie

news. Warrior Nation

(@Warriornation1)

and WVTV are also

available on Twitter

(@WVTV). Another

way to stay informed

is to ensure that your

contact info (within Home Access Center) is correct.

Readiness Days are August 13th to the 15th, and

are divided by first letter of your last name. All the

information for this can be found at

http:/wvhs.ipsd.org/News.aspx?id=92458.

You can easily make payments for things like

lunches and fees at Waubonsie’s online payment

system, called PushCoin. Info on this is at

http://www.ipsd.org/news.aspx?id+91605.

Classes begin August 21st, and once classes begin,

tutoring will be available during lunch. ARC is an

academic resource center and is staffed by content

area staff. The area has undergone some changes over

the summer, so make sure your student checks out the

improvements. They can bring homework or

questions to ARC for assistance and support. Also, if

parents set up a HERO account (information will be

available at Readiness Days) they will get confirmation

emails that their student attended ARC.

Any other questions you have you can find

answers to on the Waubonsie website or by using any

of the above information resources. I hope this helps

and encourages you to support our high school.

Pet TalesBy the Naperville Area Humane Society

Theo | Male | 2 Years OldAffectionate, laid back, and handsome are how I would describe myself. I am one of the coolest cats outthere if I say so myself! My main goal though out every day is to get petted and admired. I maybe FIV +, butthat doesn’t stop me from enjoying life. Since I am so laid back I could probably live with another dog. FIV +is not something any human can get and it isn’t easily passed to other cats. Come meet me soon so we canchill together! * FIV Positive

Juice | Male | 4 Years OldI know what you are thinking...wow what a handsome boy! Yes, I may have the good looks, but moreimportantly I am smart with a stellar personality. I love everyone I meet, and I will happily introduce myselfto you in a very polite way (jumping is for puppies, and I am a 4-year old mature man). If there is anotherdog in your house, bring him or her on by to meet me as I enjoy the company of the four-legged friends asmuch as the two-legged. Also, I forgot to mention I LOVE car rides! I prefer to ride shotgun, but understandif you prefer I sit in back. Currently, I am at IYC-Warrenville on my way to achieving a Canine Good CitizenCertification in the Project Pawsitive Future program. In just a few days there, I already know how to sit, laydown and stay. My graduation date is July 25, but if you want to meet me before please call NAHS and setup an appointment. I would love to have my furever home and family waiting to take me home after mygraduation day!

Adoptable PETS of the MONTH...

Calling all Animal Loving Kids!

K9 Matters ProgramK9 Manners is a 5‐session class for the spring and fall that allows kids to work with a Humane Society dog.

Children will learn positive reinforcement training techniques and have the opportunity each class to work with our shelterdogs. The training the dogs receive will be in line with the requirements on the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) evaluation.

At the conclusion of each session, the children will have a strong sense of accomplishment knowing that they helped their dog‐partner get one step closer towards achieving his or her CGC certificate.

Ages: 11‑14 years‑old Cost: $50 per student

Dates (Thursdays from 4 ‑ 4:45 pm) Fall Session: August 23‑ 30, September 6, 13, 20

If you have any questions, please contact Lauren Lonski, Humane Education Manager at 630‐420‐8989 ext. 114 or you can register online at www.naperhumane.org/education.

This may or may not be the right time for you to adopt a new furry family member or maybe you just want to see if your child’sinterest is serious before making a commitment to an animal.

Naperville Area Humane Society’s education programs are a great place to start!
