The oil head travels back and forth at a constant speed
The Kegel lane machine can travel at six different speeds for best front to back taper results
Streams of oil are applied to the dual brush transfer system
The buffer brush rotates at a constant speed applying oil to the lane surface
Start and Stop = The boards where the stream of oil begins and ends– The width of one stream of applied oil
40 µl
Ld = Number of Loads – How many loads or streams of oil are applied to the lane
40 µl
Sp = Travel Speed of the machine in inches per second– Kegel lane machines have six available drive speeds– The slower the drive speed, the more oil is buffed to a specific area– The faster the drive speed, the less oil is buffed to a specific area
40 µl
Cr = The number of boards crossed per load screen– A bowling lane consists of 39 boards– One 2 to 2 load crosses 37 boards…Two 2 to 2 loads cross twice that = 74 boards– One 10 to 10 load crosses 21 boards, two 10 to 10 loads cross twice that = 42 boards
40 µl
Boards Crossed is a the number of boards oil is applied• Forward Boards Crossed is 74 + 27 + 42 + 34 + 26 = 203 boards• Reverse Boards Crossed is 26 + 30 + 38 + 46 + 25 + 27 + 74 = 266
boards• Total Boards Crossed is (Forward 203) + (Reverse 266) = 469 boards
40 µl
Start F. and End F. = Start and End point the machine travels per load screen
FT = Total distance the streams of oil are applied to the buffer brush in that load screen
40 µl
TOil = Total amount of oil applied per load screen– Calculated in microliters (µl) of oil per board (example here is 40 µl stream of oil)– One 2-2 load or stream = 37 boards crossed multiplied by a 40 µl oil stream = 1480 µl =
1.48 ml– Screen 1F has two 2-2 loads = 74 boards crossed multiplied by a 40 µl = 2960 µl = 2.96 ml
40 µl
Oil Totals = Total amount of oil applied per lane– Forward boards crossed is 203 x 40 µl oil stream = 8120 µl = 8.12 ml– Reverse boards crossed is 266 x 40 µl oil stream = 10640 µl = 10.64
ml– Volume Oil Total is 8.12 ml + 10.64 ml = 18.76 ml
40 µl
Number of 2 to 2 Loads on Screen 1F– May tell us the approximate difficulty of a pattern– The more 2 to 2 loads, the more difficult the oil pattern
Length of the Oil Pattern– May give us an idea where to play; inside, middle or outside– Longer patterns tend to play more inside– Shorter patterns tend to play more outside
The total volume of the Oil Pattern– More oil is used for more games between re-oils or higher friction lane surfaces

The chart on this page is generated by Kegel’s KOSI lane machine software from the Sanction Technology lane machine program sheet.
The OVERHEAD CHART on the right shows where the conditioner is applied on both the forward and reverse screens.
The gradient area is a calculation of how the conditioner might bleed off of the buffer brush after the application of conditioner has stopped being applied to the buffer brush.
The COMPOSITE GRAPH below is also generated by KOSI from the program sheet and shows the total amount of conditioner applied to every board.
A good way to think about this graph is to envision all the conditioner on the lane being pushed back to the foul line. Once all the conditioner is stacked up, this is what it would look like.
By calculating the total volume on each board, we can generate a VOLUME RATIO from the Kegel Sanction Technology Program Sheet.
Keep in mind, the VOLUME RATIO is not the same as USBC Sport Bowling ratios which are derived from the lane tapes and Lane Monitor.
VOLUME RATIO is a good indicator of how easy or difficult the pattern might play. Generally, the lower the ratios in the break point area, the more difficult the oil pattern. Pattern length and the slope of the oil pattern along with individual lane surface characteristics determine the optimum break point area.
