CHAPTER ORGANIZATION

In OSKar, there are eight officers in charge of organizing the society:

• President — Emilio Gutierrez-Partida

• Vice President — Adrian Dittmaier

• Treasurer — Petra Schumacher

• Secretary — Niklas Borchers

• Public Relations — Prateek Gupta

• Event Coordinator — Rimantė Jarockytė

• Outreach Coordinator — Marius Kienzler

• Faculty Advisor SPIE – Prof. Dr. Uli Lemmer

There are two kinds of membership: Student member and Society member. Everybody can

become a student member and get access to the minutes of past meetings and our collection

of exam protocols for some lectures given at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

Being a society member requires the student to be either a member of OSA or SPIE and that

he or she has affiliated his or her membership with our student chapter. Society members get

additional benefits: They can take part for free or discounted participation in our activities; they

have the right to vote during elections and can also nominate themselves for board positions.

Any society member can be an OSKar representative to one of the international conferences

of OSA and SPIE, and many more around the globe. The OSA student membership is $20

USD per year, and the SPIE student membership $20 USD as well.

OSKar was officially accepted as SPIE chapter on May 7th, 2012.

Activities

Stammtisch + Open Meeting

Our group, besides the official logistics and planning meetings, holds a monthly open meeting where

we discuss the most recent events and future plans for the board.

After the meeting we normally have a “Stammtisch”, which is a german word to describe informal

meetings among the members of an organization or club. It is an important social event to chat and

discuss in a relaxed atmosphere, commonly accompanied by a drink or a nice meal. The Stammtisch

takes place regularly every second Wednesday of the month.

Some of the highlights of this year were the Stammtisch in the “Weihnachtsmarkt”, a german market

only in Christmas and also the Stammtisch for the new batch of students which helped them in getting

to know the city and each other.

International Dinner

To welcome the new batch of students in the Karlsruhe School of Optics and Photonics, every semester,

we organize a fun event called the “International dinner”. During this event, we usually motivate students

form part of OSKar and the great international optics community, along with having a good time and

getting to know each other.

Like every semester, the Erasmus students also arrived at the beginning of the lectures and the OSKar

chapter organized the International Dinner.

The idea of the event is as the name states, that everyone bring a dish from his/her country and shares

it with the other students. It is always a nice evening where the new students are allowed to get their

questions about the master answered and can get all the important information about the courses, city

life, etc.

This year we had a lot of participants from 4 different OSKar generations, we enjoyed the night with

dishes from around 15 countries and a lot of new members for the chapter.

SPIE student Leadership Conference - 19.08.18

During the summer of 2018, having finished their internships, Anirudh and Klaudia attended the annual

SPIE Optics & Photonics conference in San Diego. Klaudia being the facilitator for the student chapter

leadership workshop (SCLW) attended the facilitator meetup, on 17th August- a day prior to the SCLW.

During the event she met with the other facilitators and was trained to be a moderator during the

workshop. Before, the actual conference started, we attended the student leadership workshop. Anirudh

was attending the conference for the first time.

The student leadership workshop was held on 18th August and was conducted by Jean-Luc-Doumount.

It was a great start to the conference, where Mr. Doumount presented us the art of communication and

persuasion. As the workshop was a group event, it was a fun way to meet other student chapter

members, from around the world, as well as to participate in the persuasion and communication

exercises with them.

The next day, we attended the course by Mr. Doumount on making the most of your presentation. The

course offered insights on how to get the message across in presentations. It also offered tips on

managing the nervousness while giving presentations and speaking in public. It was a great learning

experience which has been useful for our professional career. Later that day, we attended the Optics

outreach games, where we got to see and learn experiments from other student chapters. We have

been trying to use some of these experiments in our outreach events.

The official conference started on Monday where we attended several talks on topics ranging from

biosensing and laser beam shaping techniques. The lunch with the experts was also a great opportunity

to meet Prof.John E. Greivenkamp, where he shared his experience and career path. Later that day we

attended the poster session and learned about the various research topics. After an exhausting day,

we attended the welcome reception where we remembered Stephen Hawking.

On Tuesday, we attended a job fair and several other talks after which we presented the OSKar poster.

It was, again, a good opportunity to see the kind of outreach activities conducted by other student

chapters. It was followed by a reception in the evening. On Wednesday, we attended a few more talks.

In the afternoon all the friends we had made decided to go to the beach. So, we decided to join them

and had a refreshing swim in the hot sunny weather.

Overall, it was a fun filled week where we not only learned new skills or learn about the latest research

happening in the field but also, we made connections and friends from across the world. It was a

wonderful experience which we shall cherish for a long time.

On Thursday, both Klaudia and Anirudh left to travel to Mexico.

Freiburg City Tour - 13.10.18

Another event mostly planned for the new batch. One of our OSKar members, who did his Internship in

Freiburg, helped the team by giving a tour to some people of the new and the older batch at the beautiful

city of Freiburg.

We started by climbing the Blue bridge (A tradition of Freiburg saying a visit to the city is not complete

until you sit on the bridge). From there we went to the amazing Schlossberg (Tower in the mountain)

and enjoyed the view of the city from above. The day was filled with joy and nice weather, all the

students had a great time and were really excited about their start at the Optics & Photonics world.

Travelling Lecture Prof. Christopher Dainty - 08.11.18

On 8th November, Prof. Christopher Dainty gave a talk about limits on smartphones cameras to KSOP

and KIT physics students. We got a brief introduction to the history of digital image capturing, current

achievements and limitations for the future development.

The interesting presentation was followed by further discussions with food and drinks.

Board Elections - 14.11.19

Like every year, time to say goodbye to the old board arrived and the new elections had to be made.

With a total of 22 attendees, more than 1 third of the total OSKar members the elections were

successfully held on the 14th of November.

The old board(upper picture) was then dismissed of all responsibility followed by a warm welcome to

the new board members (lower picture).

IOSB Fraunhofer Visit - 17.12.19

After successfully accomplishing their Master Thesis, two former OSKar members gave a tour through

the modern laboratories of the Fraunhofer research institute IOSB at which they worked. The visit was

a huge success, not only for what was learnt but also it was one of the first effective networking

opportunities the new batch had.

After the event, some students managed to receive a position as a research assistant at the Fraunhofer

institut.

LaTex & Mendeley Introduction + Open Meeting - 09.01.19

While discussing with our members we realized that a workshop related to an appropriate computer

program usable for report writing was in high demand. Therefore we held a workshop on LaTex, using

the easily accessible and collaboration promoting online version Overleaf, and the document and

source organization software Mendeley. The basics of both programs were covered, we did see an

improvement in proficiency regarding report writing after the workshop. A lively discussion which

followed the talk highlighted the need for this workshop for the beginners to LaTex.

Gerhard Jaworek Lecture: “Exploring the Universe with four Senses” - 16.01.19

On 16th January, the graduate computer scientist at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT),

Gerhard Jaworek has introduced us to his way of seeing the universe. Even though Gerhard Jaworek

is blind, astronomy is his passion.

In his presentation, G. Jaworek described how his curiosity and interest in science were awakened in

childhood, how he was able to live in the world of astronomy despite his blindness, and how astronomy

as a discipline could integrate people with sensory disabilities into the mainstream. During the lecture

we were able to listen to the sounds of celestial bodies and phenomena in the atmosphere.

Afterwards, the lecturer invited everyone to touch 3D models and tactile graphics of astronomy. Drinks

and snacks were offered in a corridor as refreshments.

Winter Hike - 27.10.19

Early sunday in the end of January we gathered for a hike in the Black Forest. As Karlsruhe is known

to be one of the warmest cities in Germany, no wonder, that many of us would like to experience some

real winter with snow. In the search of snow we took the train to a small town called Oppenau, and

began our hike uphill.

We have walked through the forest and enjoyed great views. Sadly, only a little bit of snow was left.

However, it didn't stop us from a short snowball fight.

Info Session for the new Batch 13.02.19

As the examination session of the semester came closer the tension of the new batch increased

tremendously. In order to get them more comfortable with their first master exams, senior OSKar

members held a Q&A session.

Bowling 28.02.19

To break the monotony and experience the conservation of momentum, OSKar organized a relaxing

evening at the local bowling court. It was huge fun!

Girls Day - 28.03.19

Every year, a nationwide day is held in Germany to introduce and excite girls for the STEM fields - Girls

Day -by inviting girls to try out job areas which are male dominated. One of the major messages is that

STEM is nothing to be fearful of and should be considered as a career and study options.

In cooperation with our university the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, OSkar participated in the Girls

Day at KIT, an event concentrated on bringing the idea that science and technology is fun and

appealing, instead of difficult, boring or rigorous to 9 - 14 year old girls.

After setting up in the “Gastdozenthaus” at KIT we welcomed a group of 21 girls at 11am. We were

able to show that optics is a lot more than just eye glasses. After splitting the group into two, each with

their own set of experiments and instructors, the day started.

We proceeded to show and explain experiments on polarization, using a PC screen with one polarizer

removed, mixing of colors, and what is white, and refraction and total internal reflection to name just a

few. While some experiments are just shown, quite a few allow for hands on experiences with light

allowing the girls to formulate ideas and discover principles.

After lunch, the groups switched tables and experiments to be able to see the whole range of optics

phenomena. As a bonus, one of our members demonstrated as an extension to the color mixing

experiments the pixel configurations used in smartphones with a small portable microscope.

After a brief feedback session every participant was gifted with a pair of diffraction spectacles to bring

a part of the experiments they saw that day home and into their schools. We used the feedback provided

to us to improve the set up for the upcoming outreach events.

Erasmus Welcome 15.04.19

OSKar held a presentation to the Erasmus students which come for the new semester. We introduced

them in the activities and opportunities they receive by joining OSKar and becoming and SPIE member,

we also invited them to our first events

Campus Tour 17.04.19

An event made every semester, in order to welcome the new Erasmus students we held a Campus

tour. During this tour we took the students to the most important places of the university, like the library,

the cafeteria, and the important halls where the most important lectures were held.

Page 15: the Optics Students Karlsruhe (OSKar) are a group of ... · Ali Nawaz Babar -20 September 2019 Samuel Bassaly -20 February 2020 Prateek Gupta -13 June 2020 Niklas Borchers ... The

International Day of Light - 16.05.19

When the call came for an outreach activity on the International Day of Light we were ready.

Incorporated into the KIT Career Fair we had the opportunity to show our experiments to passing

students and staff from the attending companies. For this, a pavilion was set up in front of the biggest

lecture hall at KIT.

We once again created quite a bit of puzzled looks with our heat vision camera. Overall we spoke to at

least 150 people that passed by. Also it became clear again how important it is to explain optics as

many people were unsure about the origins of everyday phenomena. It challenged us to give an

appropriate and simultaneously simple answer to people which were not related to optics at all.

Our activity also gave us an opportunity to network and strengthen our relationship with the industry.

OSKar Weekend Getaway - 07.06.19 - 09.06.19

An interesting new event which started last year was a weekend trip to a house in the middle of the

Black Forest. Inspired by the workshops given in SPIE student leadership events 10 of our members

from the old batch, the new and the Erasmus people, enjoyed a unique and fun two-day learning

experience.

We started off with an interactive talk about effective communication modeled about what us engineers

understand best: machines. This little experimental workshop proved to be a great way to enhance both

group cohesiveness and individual communication skills and awareness of people interactions.

Later we followed it with an outreach experiment design contest, in two competing groups of five.

After a nice lunch and a hike up the forest hills that included a nice rollercoaster trip down, we uncovered

our experiments and then shared a nice meal down, and topped it all of watching the misty mountains

over the fire while we traded some stories about the past, present and future of our lives learning light.

This conversation carried on the entire Sunday as we toyed around more with our outreach elements

and our newly refined communication skills.

Laser World of Photonics in Munich - 24.06.19

The “Laser World of Photonics” takes place in Munich and the OSKar board decided to send three

dedicated members as a grant. In the words of one of the attendees it was a great success:

Attending "Laser World of Photonics" was an immense experience for me. And as a representative of

OSKar, I got a chance to see and understand the advanced world of Photonics and latest instruments.

There were so many stalls and to visit each of them in a day was not as such possible for me. Thus,

amongst all, I tried to visit the interesting stalls which represented their research and instruments like

"Topics Photonics", "Nanoscribe","SmarAct", "Fraunhofer IOF", "UniVet- Optical Technologies","Thor

Labs" and many more. They presented components like frequency combs, tunable laser diodes,

femtofiber lasers, quantum enhanced imaging, linear stages, modular system for high precision, tunable

To:Sapphire laser for multiphoton microscopy and laser protection to name few.

The representatives at the stalls explained the science, working and future plans of their companies.

Amongst all the booths, there were some presentations too, which were very informative and gave idea

as how the research was done to reach the final product, which was presented at the stalls. Few of

them which I attended were:

● Molecular Spectroscopy for efficient medical diagnostics and therapy [AR/VR in Medicine].

● Agilent : Optical Measurements using next generation UV-VIS/NIR Spectrophotometer.

● Femtosecond Laser Technology for high throughput and productivity.

● Applications of Ultrafast Lasers in Automotive Industry.

I hope OSKar represents in all such future events which will not only make students know about the

research but also industrial opportunities that lies ahead.

With some good industry contacts we could manage to get the entrance tickets for free.

Open Days - 29.06.2019

One of the annual activities of the KIT Campus Ost ist to organize a big event where the people are

invited to visit the campus and learn about different topics in the field of science. Similar to other events,

OSKar organized a table full of interesting optics & photonics experiments which has been presented

and explained to all kinds of people - from kids to adults.

The event was a great success not only had we a lot of attendees but there were a lot of interested

people about our work and asked about ways to participate in further events. The Collaboration with

some Students and Professors is our new task after this day.
