Celebrate NAIDOC Week by treating yourself to recipes from a beautiful little book - Koori Kids’ Kitchen Tales: Fifteen Indigenous Family Recipes (641.5 KOO, available for loan).

Lemon Myrtle Scones. 3 cups self-raising flour 1 cup cream 1 cup lemonade 2 tablespoons dried lemon myrtle Pinch of salt

Preheat oven to 220c. Lightly grease baking tray. Sift the flour and salt into a large bowl. Create a well in the middle, and add the cream, lemonade and lemon myrtle. Stir until well combined. Place small balls of mixture onto the greased tray. Bake for ten minutes until golden brown. Serve warm with jam and cream.

Celebrating NAIDOC Week 2018 Did you know the Town of Bassendean has registered Aboriginal sites within the district? These include the Swan River/ Derbarl Yerrigan, Nyibra Swamp, Success Hill and Mary Crescent Reserve. Read about Whadjuk Noongar history at https://parks.dpaw.wa.gov.au/park/swan-canning-riverpark

Also of interest will be Marli riverpark - an Interpretation Plan for the Swan and Canning Riverpark (2014) and Indigenous history of the Swan and Canning rivers by Debra Hughes-Hallett. (Linked at the above website)

Under the theme - Because of her, we can! NAIDOC Week 2018 will celebrate the invaluable contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have made – and continue to make - to our communities, our families, our rich history and to our nation.

The Bassendean Library will focus on the life of May O’Brien. May was born in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia, and at the age of five, was taken to Mount Margaret Mission where she spent the next twelve years. She taught in Western Australian rural and metropolitan primary schools for twenty-five years. May served in a number of other positions before being appointed Superintendent of Aboriginal Education, a position she held until her early retirement in 1988. Since retiring, May has been writing bilingual children’s books that feature her Wongatha language.

Bassendean Memorial Public Library BORROWING RULES AND CONDITIONS

1. A Library card is required to borrow items; resources cannot be removed from the building unless they are registered as a loan.

2. The Library needs to be notified if the card is lost or stolen as library patrons are responsible for any items borrowed prior to such notification.

3. All items need to be returned on or before the due date in good condition as patrons may be required to pay the replacement cost for damaged or lost items. A non-refundable administration fee will be charged for overdue items.

4. The Library does not censor resources used, borrowed or accessed from the library.

5. Parents/Guardians are responsible for their child’s resource selection and in the monitoring of library resource and Internet use.

Effective from 1st July, 2018.
