In an article on Puccini's unfinished Turandot in April's LuccaMusica – the essential free guide to Lucca's music scene (includes an English version) – eminent Puccini expert, Michele Bianchi, states that Puccini didn't complete the opera not because he fell ill but because he was still dissatisfied with the libretto's Maureen Halson is well-known for her sculpture, combining a final denouement. will take place in the marvellous baroque Oratory near the Torre Guinigi in Lucca's historic center. The fasci-nating frescoes by Lucca painter Gian Domenico T

Lombardi and the excellent acoustics make the oratory a unique location with a warm and enveloping atmosphere.

The organization has reached its third consecutive year of activ-ity, proposing a program with international collaborations (Berlin, Buenos Aires, New York, Melbourne, Vienna) and the participa-tion of soloists from around the world.

On June 12 at 9 pm, Roberto Giordano’s concert will be of par-ticular interest. This pianist from Calabria has performed in the major theatres and concert halls of the world, including Milan's La Scala, Paris, Salzburg and New York. He records regularly and his videos are transmitted on classical music channels.

In 2012 his performance at the Oratory of the Angeli Custodi was a clamorous success. He returns to Lucca with a program entirely dedicated to late 19th/early 20th century Viennese composers.

On June 18 at 9 pm, Claudio Sanna (pianist) and Silvia Puggioni (clarinettist) will perform two concertos for piano and clarinet, by C. M. Von Weber and Aaron Copland, offering all the sweet and sensual fascination of these pieces.

The concert season continues in July with many more appoint-ments, sponsored by Vienna’s UNESCO Club and Alice Amy McDonald scholarship trust (Melbourne, Australia).

Don Pasquale in MontecarlouccaOPERAfestival is celebrating this year's activity with two Donizetti titles: Don Pasquale and L L'Elisir d’Amore. The first

opera season proposed by this group of young people, already established artists with international experience, was a grand success. The performances in the 18th cen-tury Teatro dei Rassicurati of Montecarlo (see photo) found their ideal setting and the public responded enthusiastically.

Don Pasquale will be presented on 13, 14, 15 June at 8.30 pm, with a modern and captivating staging. The opera, directed by Stefania Panighini, is set in a 1950's cine-matography studio. Panighini has already worked in many theatres, including Venice, Bologna, Florence, Wexford and Vienna, collaborating with artists on an international level.

The ones listed below are from the Versilia Coast, Garfagnana Mountains, and the Valle del Serchio; there are plenty more scattered throughout the countryside and around the towns. Before setting off, take a good map or GPS and a jacket or sweater for the cool evenings. Allow extra driving time so you can enjoy the route!

Next month we'll bring you the Sagras of August and September....

aint Fiacre is the Irish patron saint of gardening. The saintly monk made a garden around a little church dedicated to Our Lady in the seventh S century! I need that Irish monk's help in my

campo (allotment). Everything is growing so fast, particularly the weeds and grass!

The other problem is water. I'm hoping, indeed praying, for rain. One must water everything twice daily: early in the morning and just before supper. It's pointless to water things during the day. And the higher summer temperatures haven't even hit us yet!

Tomatoes of five different varieties, courgettes, cucum-bers, melons and various types of salad are now settled down after their birth-pangs. Fruit trees are showing good signs of flourishing too.

Anyway, there could be no more beautiful place to do one's gardening than here.

There is sufficient tree cover to cool off in the hotter parts of the day. The occasional wild animal pays a visit (mainly deer – hopefully not wolves which are becoming more fre-quent in these parts as local shepherds inform us) and there's lots of peace and quiet. I might even pitch my tent here and enjoy a bit of very local camping.

I'm off again this early morn-ing for more de-weeding, grass-cutting and watering. I'm feeling more of a peasant (in the positive sense of the word) every day and have lit-tle impetus to be away for more than a day or two from my field.

The soil really ties one down. We are made from its products (home-grown taste so much better than anything a supermarket could provide) and one day will return to it too….

It's truly the good life at the moment!

Weeds We Can Eatrom the beginning of Spring to almost the end of Autumn the hedgerows and woodlands of the Lucca F region offer a wealth of great

food. The funghi gathered in the nearby woodlands of the Garfagnana, the blueberries of the Tre Potenze and the wild asparagus from the hills near Pisa. Unfortunately for those of us who have little local knowledge of woodsman skills these dietary wonders of the wild are virtually impossible to find and when you do someone else has been there before you, and, in the case of the funghi, can be extremely dangerous. However, there are a wide variety of salads and vegetables, not to mention fruits, that are easy to find and enjoy. One of these greens is found almost everywhere, even your back garden, and is fit to grace the table of any king – and probably has in the past … the lowly nettle.

The Common Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica), ortica in Italian, scourge of the gardener, has been used in food and medicines for millennia. It almost certainly graced the tables of the early hunter-gatherers. The ancient Greeks reportedly used them as a diuretic and laxative. Over the centuries the nettle has been used as a rem-edy for many other ailments and afflictions too numerous and sometimes too strange to mention.

The everyday nettle can be used in soups, pastas, risotti, gnocchi, omelettes, as a pesto, in salads or just as a simple side dish. It can be dried out and used as a tea or infusion. The roots can be used as a dye. They can be mulched up, added to water and used as an insecticide (this I believe is a common use by local farmers). The list goes on and on.

The nettle can be found pretty much anywhere you go from mid-March through the end of November, along roads and tracks, streams and rivers. It likes rich soil and lightly shaded areas. Wear long trousers and latex gloves. I prefer to use my nails to pinch the tops out, as it's a lot quicker than scissors and a lot easier to feel the leaf and not pull up the stalk. If you get the tips young enough there is little or no sting. Latex gloves with the thumb and forefin-ger tips cut off also work. Either way, it gets easier with practice. Avoid collecting nettles by the roadside. They are often dirty with muck from traffic and fumes. Look for a spot where the dogs don't go and where the nettles look like they are there to stay.

For best results collect only the tips. Just pinch out the last 4 to 6 leaves, although the lower leaves can be used if you are in short supply. Even when in flower they are still useable but the best times are spring and autumn. For a risotto or pasta you will need about half a carrier bag full; soups, side dishes a bit more. Any excess can always be frozen. Try and collect the best quality. Once you have gathered enough, sort through them, taking out any thick stalks, bits of grass and the odd snail. What you want is Nettle risotto is just one of the many things you can do with this just the leaf and if you picked right then this process should be versatile weed. If you manage your nettle patches well you can easy. When you're ready make sure you give them a good wash get a good crop most months throughout the growing season, and leave them to drain. Now for the good bit. First you have to remove the sting. In a using the nettles when flowering as they are more bitter and large pan boil some water, just enough to cover them, with a little tough, but they can still be used if you add a little sugar in the first salt (optional). Add your nettles to the water and stir for one or stage and boil a bit longer. You can change the recipe and try two minutes. Remove the nettles from the water and strain them something different.in a colander over a bowl, saving the liquid for later. Nettles are Remember, nettles are similar to spinach. Nettle Risotto

?1 – 1.5 litres of vegetable stock?250 g cooked finely chopped nettle leaves?70 g butter?olive oil?100 ml dry white wine?4 shallots or 2 medium onions (chopped)*?400 g Arborio or Canaroli rice?2 – 3 cloves of garlic, finely minced*?good handful of freshly grated hard cheese

(a mild pecorino or grana padano) ?Salt and pepper to taste

*Traditionally the recipe was much simpler and used traditional ingredients such as wild garlic. Onions were substituted for leeks depending on the time of year. The wine can be substituted with beer.

Heat the vegetable stock and add the strained liquid from the nettles, making up about 1 to 1.5 litres. Once heated, keep the stock at a low simmer. In a large, thick-bottomed saucepan heat the olive oil and add the onion or shallot. Sweat the onion for 3 or 4 minutes, add garlic and continue for a couple more minutes. Add the rice and stir well to coat the grains. Cook the rice gently for a few minutes, stirring continuously, until it begins to look translucent. Add the wine, remember to keep the mix-ture moving until all the wine has been absorbed. Now add the nettles and cook for a few more minutes before adding a ladle of the stock.

Continue to simmer and stir until it is all but absorbed. Keep adding the stock a ladle at a time, ensuring each measure is absorbed before adding the next. Continue the process until the rice is cooked, adding a little salt to taste if necessary. The rice is cooked when it is soft on the outside and slightly raw in the middle – al dente. Remove the rice from the heat. Add the butter and grated cheese, stirring gently. Serve immediately with a chunk of freshly baked bread.

short distance from Longoio is the tiny hamlet of Mobbiano. There is nowhere to park in Mobbiano unless you live there, so it is best to leave your car at A the bottom of the hill and walk up.

I walked down from above Longoio, past the little church that sits between the two villages. A little further along the track Mobbiano comes into

view. Mobbiano is now a collection of houses. I don’t know whether there were ever shops or businesses here.

There are some lovely houses and it must be a peaceful place to live. All you can hear is birds. The gardens are lovely and the views are gorgeous. There are some seriously steep steps and tiny lanes between the levels of the village.

Spring seemed like a perfect excuse to revisit Longoio, one of the tiny villages on the way to San Cassiano. Just after Gombereto, on a bend in the road, is the sign for Longoio. Turn left and follow the narrow road to the car park. From there it is walking only. Friend and fellow blogger Francis showed me his village. His house is at the very top of Longoio, offering fabulous views of the valley below and several other villages. Francis and Alexandra took me for a walk above and behind Longoio.

The path leads to the most amazing forest of old oak trees and dry stone walls. The ancient paths are lined with stones. I would love to know who built them. Clearly a lot of hard work was involved.

Monte di Villa, Pieve di Monte di Villa, Riolo and Granaiola can be seen through the trees. We wandered down to the delightful little chapel, Madonna della Serra. It is very well maintained. There is a curious little statue of Beethoven just inside the window. I wonder why.

On the left of the church is a track leading down to La Villa. On the other side there are great views of Il Rondinaio. We walked back towards Longoio past an old fountain.

We came upon the wonderful sight of a shepherd with her goats. The beautiful animals looked as though they had just been washed and brushed and were out for a walk to show off their lovely coats.

We passed some huge old stone wheels from a mill, and came to the old path to Longoio. Right now is a perfect time to do this walk. Wisteria is in bloom, fruit trees are in blossom, wildflowers are everywhere… What more could you want?
