Whoa! What happened to the color? Is this black-and-white publication really from Womanspace — the place known for vibrant covers? Well, YES . . .and let me tell you why: Watching art class trends in New Dimensions Studio is one of our favorite occupations . In the last year, we have noticed a BIG enrollment increase in some areas — particularly pen and ink classes . There is something very satisfying about being able to draw. It is a skill that transfers to almost every other art form. We are delighted to have a wonderful and generous instructor (Ray Schulz) and dedicated students to highlight . So, in this issue, we celebrate pen and ink drawing .

A brief digression: While I am on that topic, here is a question for you, dear reader: Have YOU personally ever considered exploring drawing for yourself? If not, you might perhaps consider this a tap on your shoulder from “the universe .” The phrase: I can’t draw is the perfect reason to take a class! You will never know until you try .

And now, back to the black-and-white basics: “Celebrating drawing” is the primary cause for our cover choice this year, AND it is a pragmatic one as well . Printing in one color is considerably less expensive than using full color . This season we are being economical while also holding up a beautiful art form .

In this issue of Your Guide you will find MANY unique and intriguing offerings . So I invite you to sit down with a cup of coffee or tea, your favorite colored marker and your calendar . Get ready to highlight the things you want to experience during this trimester . Don’t be surprised if your black-and-white Your Guide is suddenly filled with many colored notations!

While you are at it, think about doing your friends (and us) a favor by noticing programs that would be interesting and beneficial to the people you are close to — your family and friends . It is more fun to come to an event WITH someone, and you can be the person who makes that happen by reaching out and making a suggestion . You can be part of that “one woman at a time” that we believe in so strongly .

You might also notice in this Your Guide that there are variations on some programs . We are trying to make topics available at different times of the day, different lengths of time, different instructors on similar topics, etc . Take time to peruse these pages and let your heart be open . You will see that there are at least three retreats, a solstice and equinox celebration and a weekend journaling workshop that is like a retreat; two different types of meditation offerings; many different painting and drawing classes; clay classes galore; writing classes and groups; book discussions; groups for spiritual support, photography, creativity and environmental awareness; programs on herbs and various healthful practices; parenting; drumming; social justice, sleeping . . .and that is just for starters!

I may have begun with Whoa! but now I end with WHEW! Enjoy exploring these abundant pages . I hope to see you soon!

Elaine Hirschenberger, Executive Director

In her early childhood, she and her sister, Renee McArdle, lived with their Irish grandfather and Welsh grandmother where they learned to see the “invisible world” and relate to it. Conversations with the spiritual world were as real as conversations around the dining room table. We are in the Home Stretch of Our Lives, Spirituality & Science

Journey to Inner Freedom: A Journaling Experience in Writing from the Quiet CenterFaye Schwelitz, Ph.D. in the William Reif Gallery

October 6–8, 2017 (RT17-1)

The name, JOURNEY TO INNER FREEDOM, reflects the goal of writing from the quiet center: to uncover within ourselves an inner freedom, one we did not know we possess . As we discover the hidden resources deep within us, we also find ways to free ourselves of the chains of past destructive behaviors and to learn from the “mistakes” of life . We begin to see that all the material of our life is a rich, exciting learning ground and fertile soil for new, creative works . As this occurs we find our-selves more and more inwardly free and truly ourselves . By writing from the quiet center we are able to follow our inner guidance and do the deep inner work our lives require . This workshop will use the journal method of Ira Progoff described in his book, At a Journal Workshop. Bring a sack lunch on Saturday!

Reiki ClassesDebby Gaines in the Media Room

Reiki (ray-key) is a Japanese word meaning “Universal Life Force Energy” and describes the energy found in all of life . An ancient form of hands on energy healing, Reiki is a skill obtained through an attunement (opening) to bring the power of Universal Life Force Energy through the human chakra system . The energy then is used to balance the body or an object by bringing it into harmony with the universe once again .

Circling the Sun by Paula McLainThe story of Beryl Markham, a record-setting aviator caught up in a passionate love triangle with safari hunter Denis Finch-Hatton and Karen Blixen, who, as Isak Dinesen, wrote the classic memoir Out of Africa . Raised in Kenya, Beryl’s unconventional upbringing transforms her into a bold young woman with a fierce love of all things wild and an inherent understanding of nature’s del icate balance . She forges her own path as a horse trainer and eventually as an aviator . Set against the majestic landscape of early-twentieth-century Africa, the book reveals the extraordinary adventures of a woman ahead of her time, the exhilaration of freedom and its cost, and the tenacity of the human spirit .

Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End by Atul GawandeMedicine has triumphed in many areas, but in the inevitable condition of aging and death, the goals of medicine seem too frequently to run counter to the interest of the human spirit . Gawande, a practicing surgeon, addresses his profession’s ultimate limitation, arguing that the quality of life is the desired goal for patients and families . He offers examples of freer, more socially fulfilling models for assisting the infirm and dependent elderly, and explores the varieties of hospice care to demonstrate that a person’s last weeks or months may be rich and dignified . Medicine can comfort and enhance our experience even to the end .

The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh NguyenThe winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, as well as six other awards, The Sympathizer is the breakthrough novel of the year . With the pace and suspense of a thriller and prose that has been compared to Graham Greene and Saul Bellow, The Sympathizer is a sweeping epic of love and betrayal . The narrator, a communist double agent, is a “man of two minds,” a half-French, half-Vietnamese army captain who arranges to come to America after the Fall of Saigon, and while building a new life with other Vietnamese refugees in Los Angeles is secretly reporting back to his communist superiors in Vietnam . The Sympathizer is a blistering exploration of identity and America, a gripping espionage novel, and a powerful story of love and friendship .

Exquisite Corpse Mosaic Susan BurtonInspired from a writing and drawing technique called “Exquisite Corpse .” The technique was invented by Surrealists in 1925 and is based on an old parlor game in which players write in turn on a sheet of paper, fold it to conceal part of the writing, and then pass it to the next player for a further contribution . Later the game was adapted to drawing and collage, producing a result similar to children’s books in which the pages were cut into thirds, the top third pages showing the head of a person or animal, the middle third the torso, and the bottom third the legs, with children having the ability to “mix and match” by turning pages . An exquisite corpse mosaic is produced in three sections . Each section is completed with mosaic, then covered and the next section is done by a different person not knowing what the other has done .

Except for times when special events are scheduled, the Womanspace Labyrinth is open to visitors seven days

a week during daylight hours . To reach it, follow the ribbon hoops at the entrance to the woods on the right side of the circle drive . It is not a maze, so once you reach the center, you will have walked on every part of the path . There are no rules, but most prefer

to walk to the rosette at the heart of the design, con-template the experience, and then retrace each step

as the path unwinds . Both inward and outward trips offer powerful life metaphors and insights .

Come discover the ancient practice of circling to the center . The Womanspace Labyrinth is a walking meditation path that is both therapeutic and energizing . A devoted team of volunteers, led by a core group of twelve women, broke ground on our prairie in 2000 and dedicated the Labyrinth on September 22, 2003 . Labyrinths have been in use for over 4000 years . Our eleven-circuit design is modeled after the laby-rinth in medieval Chartres Cathedral in France and features an echoing energy vortex at the center . The basic design is fundamental to nature as well as many cultures and religious traditions . This sacred space is our gift to the community and available to anyone seeking quiet and reflection .

Interested in renting/reserving the labyrinth for special events or ceremonies? Contact Liz Hiemstra ([email protected]).
