Message from the President

Hi Neighbors,

The February meeting of the Osprey Pointe Board of Directors brought some

changes to the Board. Missy Kehres’ resignation was accepted, and she leaves

the Board after two years of service. Missy has volunteered her time to the com-

munity in many ways over several years—leading the playground renovations pro-

ject, assisting with the Activities Committee, serving on the Board of Directors, and

more. Herb Reynolds volunteered to take her place, and was voted in by the

Board. Thanks to both of you for your time and efforts!

There was also a change in officers during the February meeting, as Mike Guida

stepped down as President and I accepted the nomination to take his place. Mike

has been involved on the Board for many years, volunteering for many community

projects and improvements, and will remain on the Board as a director. For those

who don’t know me, my name is Sydney Rossetti, and my husband and I have

lived in Osprey Pointe for 20 years. I have served on the Board of Directors for

eleven years, but this is my first experience in the role of President.

Please consider attending a meeting of the Board to learn firsthand about the is-

sues managed by our Osprey Pointe Association. We meet the first Tuesday of

every month in the Clubhouse, beginning at 7:00 (dates are also published on the

community bulletin board). It is my hope there will be more neighbors who find a

way to volunteer for our community, and attending these meetings is a good way

to learn about the needs and responsibilities of the various committees.

Board of Directors Update Vote Results for Proposed Changes to the Osprey Pointe Declaration

of Covenants and Restrictions

The study of our neighborhood’s Declaration of Covenants and Restrictions began almost one year ago, resulting in the proposal that was mailed to residents prior to our annual meeting in November. A change to the Declaration would require a super majority—2/3 approval of homeowners (or 173 ‘yes’ votes), within a timeframe that ended February 7. The vast majority (86%) of those who voted were in favor of the changes; however, only 55% of our neighbors participated in the process. The final vote was 122 in favor and 20 opposed to the changes. As a result, the Declaration remains as it was written in 1988 for the next thirty years, unless there is a successful amendment vote some time before then.

Wildlife Alert

As Osprey Pointe sits next to a natural wet-lands area, we share our neighborhood with a wide variety of wildlife, including barred owls, gray foxes, raccoons, wild geese, and the oc-casional coyote. Please be aware, and remind your children, these are wild animals and should not be approached or fed. In addition, some of these animals may prey on smaller dogs and cats, so be on the alert and protect your pets!

Daylight Savings Time Begins March 12

Don’t forget to spring forward!

During World War I, in an effort to conserve fuel,

Germany began observing DST on May 1, 1916. The

rest of Europe soon followed. The plan was not adopted

in the US until the Standard Time Act of March 19,

1918, which established standard time zones and set

summer DST to begin on March 31, 1918 (reverting Oc-

tober 27). The idea was unpopular and Congress abol-

ished DST after the war, overriding President Woodrow

Wilson's veto. DST became a local option and was ob-

served in some states until World War II, when Presi-

dent Franklin Roosevelt instituted year-round DST,

called "War Time", on February 9, 1942. It lasted until

the last Sunday in September 1945. After 1945 many

states and cities east of the Mississippi River (and

mostly north of the Ohio and Potomac Rivers) adopted

summer DST.

OP Tennis Courts

The tennis courts were resurfaced in 2016 in an effort to

keep them in good condition for the enjoyment of our

neighborhood tennis players. Unfortunately, the gate

lock has been vandalized repeatedly, costing several

hundred dollars in repairs. For that reason we can no

longer rely on the card reader to secure the gate lock,

and a combination padlock is now being used. If you

wish to play tennis and need the combination, please

send your request to Ron Stocum at docrjs@gmail.com

and he will respond within a day or two. Thank you for

your understanding in this matter.

Neighborhood Happenings

SWABS—February

Love was in the air! Nine couples battled it out playing

the Newlywed Game to see who knew their spouse the

best. Ever wonder what Robert Steel thinks is the ulti-

mate dream vacation destination for his wife? Those in

attendance were surprised (as was Karen Steel!) to

learn the answer. We also learned about unusual gifts

husbands gave to their wives, and which cartoon char-

acters husbands remind their wives of. It was an even-

ing of laughter and fun as we all

learned a little more about each

other. Congratulations to Lisa and

Pete Kirby, who won a nice parting

gift to take home. A big thanks to

Mike and Maria Guida, who set up

the event and provided pizzas for

everyone to enjoy.

Easter Egg hunt on Sunday, April 9, from 2:00-

4:00 at the Clubhouse.

What to Plant:

Annuals: Dianthus and other cool-season annuals will continue to flourish. Consider planting warm season

annuals such as angelonia, wax begonia, and zinnia at the end of the month.

Bulbs: Plant dahlia, canna, and gloriosa bulbs for spring and summer flowering bulbs in beds that have been

amended with organic matter. Provide stakes as needed to support growth.

Herbs: When temperatures warm, consider growing edible ginger. Plant a rhizome in well drained soil in full

to part sun.

Garden Vegetables: Plant warm season crops, such as bean, tomato, squash, and corn early in the month

for late spring harvest. Protect from frost.

What to Do:

Azaleas: If azaleas need hard pruning to shape or produce a fuller plant, do it just after plants finish bloom-

ing.

Prune spring flowering trees and shrubs after blooming. To guard next season’s blooms, begin pruning after

the last flowers fade but before new buds set.

Prune shrubs and trees when new growth begins. The end of the dormant season is a good time to prune

many trees and shrubs.

Identify and conserve beneficial insects: Some insects should be encouraged in your yard!

Fertilize palms, azaleas, camellias, and other ornamental shrubs if needed. Choose a fertilizer that has at

least 30% of its nitrogen as slow release.

Irrigation: Now is the time to check sprinkler systems for issues such as broken heads or inefficient spray

patterns.

Mulch: Mulch conserves moisture during dry weather and minimizes weeds in landscape beds. Organic

mulches add nutrients to the soil.
