Theme: Life lesson, meaning, moral, emotion that drives the story action or message about life or human nature that is shared in a story.

In other words…

Theme is what the story teaches readers or shows them about life.

A theme is something people outside of a book have to deal with in real life.

You don’t have to agree with the theme to identify it.
