BSCBAA Board Actions: Your BSCBAA will be providing a summary of action taken by the board during its board meetings held in executive session (Club bylaws require that board meetings be held in executive ses-sion). The club and the board have achieved major reform in accountabil-ity and transparency and are taking that a step further by providing a link in each newsletter to a summary of action taken by the board. Click here to read summaries. Within this newsletter you will find several items of interest. Each and all are well worth reading. I am particu-larly looking forward to reading Wil-liam Howard’s (DVM, BSCBAA Board member, Chair Health Committee) article discussing OFA and PennHip -see page 8. Let us know if there are any subjects of particular interest to you that you would like to read more about in the BSCBAA Newsletter. We are reviewing the BREED STAND-ARD: It is most important that the membership has an opportunity to present their ideas about the Breed Standard - see page 3 for details. The Board has voted to create a Face-Book Forum for members only and by invitation. The details will be sub-mitted to you through an email blast to join us in positive and healthy con-versations concerning our Boykin Spaniels.
Also, I encourage you to take ad-vantage of sharing your Boykin Span-iel with others by submitting to the newsletter at [email protected]. Read about the brags starting on p.5. You will find Upcoming Events on page 9 of this Newsletter or on the BSCBAA website. We hope to see you at one or more events. If you live in the Northeast, check out the Meet the Breeds in Hartford, Connecticut, Sun-day, October 26, 2014, with Boykin Spaniels presented by Jacquelin DeAn-gelo, Regina Hairie and other BSCBAA club members. If you live in Texas, plan on attending the Howl-o-Ween Fest in Bridgeland, and the WD/WDX Certification in Hempstead, Texas. And if you have not started, begin training now in preparation for the annual BSCBAA Hunt Test to be held at Cooper-Black Wood Duck Pond in Cheraw, South Carolina, February 28/March 1st, 2015. I say begin now be-cause I find myself and my Boykins way behind in training for hunt tests entered this coming weekend.
Enjoy all the things you do with your Boykin, whether hunting, hunt test, field trials, agility, conformation, ther-apy or whatever makes you and them happy! GregC

ISSUE 15 October, 2014
*IMPORTANT!* BOYKIN SPANIEL BREED STANDARD UNDER REVIEW!
© 2014 The Boykin Spaniel Club and Breeders Association of America, Inc.
We are reviewing the Breed Standard. It is most important that YOU present your ideas about the Breed
Standard. Please forward your recommendations to [email protected] or Breed Standard
Comments, BSCBAA, P.O. Box 781, Cypress, TX 77410 prior to November 3, 2014.
AKC Parent Clubs manage the breed standard for their respective breeds. Breed standards are allowed to be
updated no more often than every five years. The Boykin Spaniel Breed Standard was approved in February
2007. You may recall we first began taking a look at updating the Boykin Spaniel Breed Standard and re-
questing comments/changes in 2012.
We are again reviewing and requesting your input. Hence, we have begun taking a good look at the Boykin
Spaniel Breed Standard with the intention of providing the AKC with an update. Such an update is not to be
taken lightly nor is it a trivial matter. In accordance with the bylaws of both the AKC and the BSCBAA, an up-
date will require the BSCBAA board approval, BSCBAA membership approval and AKC Board approval. The
Breed Standard for the Boykin Spaniel is managed by the Breed Standard Sub-Committee, which is part of the
Education and Standard Committee, and consists of the following members: Chair Butch Norckauer – AL,
Greg Copeland – TX, Pat Watts – SC, Ginger Hurley – TX, Carole Thomas – SC and Rose Leale – TX.
The BSCBAA board has asked that the sub-committee collect recommended changes and prepare a consoli-
dated recommendation. In accordance with their procedures, the AKC has been notified of our intent to re-
view the standard. We have extended our request for membership input in hopes that more members will
participate in this important endeavor. From now through November 3, 2014, the sub-committee is col-
lecting recommended changes to the 2007 breed standard.
Please prepare your recommendations in the form of a suggested addition, deletion or change referenced to
the current paragraph(s) or section(s) being specific as possible, e.g., to the word, phrase or sentence; recom-
mend a specific change, addition or deletion; and provide brief yet concise rationale for the recommenda-
tion. General, non-specific comments without rationale, e.g., ‘The whiskers should not be trimmed’, may not
get the desired attention so please explain the reasoning and justification for suggested changes. In seeking
AKC approval of any proposed change, explanation, justification and reasoning is required to be submitted to
the AKC.
Forward your recommendations to [email protected] or Breed Standard Comments,
BSCBAA, P.O. Box 781, Cypress, TX 77410. To assure that each recommendation gets proper considera-
tion, submissions will be acknowledged and may be shared beyond the sub-committee.
Copies of the breed standard can be found at http://theboykinspanielclub.com/Final-
Breed_Standard_Flyer_1-10.pdf and at http://www.akc.org/breeds/boykin_spaniel/breed_standard.cfm .
We look forward to receiving your recommendations and keeping you updated on the sub-committee's pro-
gress.
Thank you.

STATUS OF COMPLAINT AND COUNTERCLAIMS The BSCBAA and twenty-one (21) present and former board mem-bers, committee persons and/or officers were sued by former mem-bers of the Club on May 23, 2013 in Lexington County, South Carolina. Your Club and each defendant moved quickly to defend against the allegations, which are consid-ered baseless. The Club and most defendants moved to dismiss the complaint. Nearly all individual de-fendants were subsequently dis-missed without the need for court involvement. The Club and one oth-er defendant remain in the suit. Your Club continues to vigorously defend against the plaintiffs’ claims
and prosecute its counterclaims against the plaintiff. An unsolic-ited settlement offer from the plaintiffs was received by your club Monday, October 28, 2013. The settlement discus-sions are proceeding.

OMG! The moon and stars were aligned at
the Greater Humble Area Kennel Club Show
on Saturday, October 4, 2014 for my girl,
Rose. This was our first dog show since the
summer break and as always I was appre-
hensive and my mind was swirling with
doubt thinking “does my dog look good, is
she moving well?” Well, I guess she was
because Silver GCH Texas Trace Yellow Rose
CGC RN won Best of Breed and Best of
Breed National Owner-Handled Series.
These wins allowed us to compete in the
Sporting Group and the NOHS Sporting
Group where she respectively won a Group
4 placement and a Group 1 placement
NOHS. The Group 1 placement in Sporting
Group NOHS allowed us to show in the
NOHS Best in Show. It was great for the
judges to recognize a Boykin Spaniel in both
venues. At this point, I’m very excited for
the opportunity to handle a Boykin Spaniel
in the BEST in Show competition. “I won-
dered can this get any better?!” Yes it did,
Rose won BEST IN SHOW NOHS! This is the
first ever for a Boykin Spaniel to win a Best
in Show! Again, OMG, this was a great day
for Boykin Spaniels, Rose, myself and the
breeders at Texas Trace. Never in my wild-
est dreams would I have expected to
achieve all this in one day! The icing on the
cake was that this was all done under three
different judges. Rose and I would like to
thank the judges for a wonderful experi-
ence: the BOB judge was R A Indelia,
Sporting Group Judge, Cindy Vogels
and BIS NOHS judge was Ms. Prudence
Hlatky.
Congratulations to Harriet Patrick's
Larriet's Rhynaissance Woman OA OAJ
“Rhyn” earned her Open JWW title
August 30 at the Houston Papillon Club
Show held in Spring, TX Rhyn is now in
Excellent standard and jumpers.
Congratulations to Texas Trace Always
Sunny in Kemah for her 1st Winner’s
Bitch on October 5, 2014 at the Hum-
ble Show. Owners are Roslin Copeland

It was a mild sunny day with thin wispy clouds in the sky as I
paddled my way down the Rivers of Waco, Texas. I came upon
a friendly fellow fishing alongside a brown spaniel looking dog
none quite-like I had ever seen before. It seemed like the per-
fect size with the perfect ability to steady itself in a boat. I
quickly inquired about the dog “Hi there, so tell me just what
kind of pup is that?” I learned it was a Boykin Spaniel and that
Boykins were known as the little dog that didn’t rock the boat.
It would seem like the perfect choice as a companion for me. I
love canoeing, fishing, swimming here on the lakes and rivers
in Waco.
Several years have passed since that one encounter on the
river with the Boykin Spaniel and it had come time for me to
seek a new companion. The encounter with that Boykin Span-
iel had always stuck with me. I began my research and seeking
out information on Boykin Spaniels. I was fortunate to have
the opportunity to meet with a nearby Boykin Spaniel breeder
at the Texas Trace Ranch & Kennel. The Copeland family spent
several hours introducing me to the Boykin Spaniel breed. We
discussed everything about Boykin Spaniel history, proper care,
training, attributes, characteristics, instincts and abilities. After
spending time with several Boykins, it was easy to recognize
how much of a well-rounded companion and bird dog they are.
I was convinced the
Boykin would be
the best choice as a
companion for me!
I was introduced to
Ranger, who was up
for adoption and it
was as though he
knew we could be
family. He stuck by my side and had an expression of eagerness that
resonated confidence for both of us. Since that moment, he has
grown to be a very loyal friend who is always attentive and ready for
any challenges that may be presented. It has only been three
months but what many adven-
tures we have already shared!
We were fortunate that it was
at the end of the summer
months, so to enjoy the hiking
in the parks, a cool-off swim in
the rivers & lakes after a long
trek and even making a canoe-
ing trip together along the
Colorado River. Ranger has
turned out to be the Little
Brown Dog that Doesn’t Rock
the Boat. On the Colorado River trip, Ranger was very steady in the
boat and enjoyed watching curiously on the edge at all the wildlife.
He is also very attentive when hiking and has easily picked up on
new commands.
Through our many adventures, Ranger has been working on socializ-
ing with other people and dogs. He always finds a couple of new
friends by the end of
each day. The same
question I first asked
and the one that contin-
ues to be asked to me is
“so tell me just what
kind of pup is that?”
When I respond with
Boykin Spaniel, the usual
reaction is; I never heard
of them nor ever seen
one. I now answer with first hand knowledge in explaining the char-
acteristics, intelligence, energy, eagerness and history of the Boykin
Spaniel. Texas Trace Kennels continues to be a part of Ranger’s life
with providing advice and help with his care. The experiences I have
shared with Ranger as a companion has provided me with much
appreciation for him and the Boykin Breed. I look forward to sharing
many more adventures with Ranger in the future as he surprises me
with his intelligence and confidence every day!

The Boykin Spaniel Standard
ISSUE 15 October, 2014 The goal of any responsible Boykin Spaniel breeder is to reduce the incidence of hip dyspla-sia in their blood lines. For now, there are two ways to diagnose hip dysplasia in dogs. The older standard was established in 1966 by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). The newer standard, known as PennHIP, was established in 1993 by the University of Pennsylvania. The OFA system rates a dog’s hip joint on a seven point scoring system and is judged by three independent radiologists. The scoring system is as follows (1) Excellent, (2) Good, (3) Fair, (4) Borderline, (5) Mild, (6) Moderate and (7) Severe. OFA Radiologists judge how well the femoral head sets in the acetabulum, the shape and size of the femoral head and the shape and depth of the acetabulum. Each breed is judged against others of the same breed to establish a standard. A dog must be two years of age or older for a certified result. Pre-liminary films can be done earlier than two years but the grading is done by only one radi-ologist. If a radiograph is taken that shows dysplastic hips, that radiograph does not have to be send to the OFA. With the OFA procedure, some dogs are sedated and others may require general anesthesia. Unlike the OFA test, which only requires one radiograph, the PennHIP test requires three radiographs and the veterinarian must be certified. PennHIP does require general anesthe-sia. The PennHIP system measures the laxity of the hip joint and can be done as early as sixteen weeks. A score between “0-1” is assigned with “0” being tight hips and “1” being loose hips. This method is not a pass or fail test, but an actual measurement of the hip Distraction Index (DI). The distraction index is based on the percent out of joint the femo-ral head is displaced from the acetabulum. A DI of .15 is 15% distracted (which is a tight hip) and 0.8 is 80% distracted (which are very loose hips). The measurements are made using a circular gauge that is paced over the films. A DI of < 0.30 is usually considered non-osteoarthritic susceptible and a DI of > .30 is considered osteoarthritic susceptible. All radi-ographs taken must be sent to PennHIP for evaluation. Each breed is compared with oth-ers of that breed that are ranked within the breed. A ranking of 70% means that the dog is better than 70% of that breed. Which test is the best? For now, the gold standard is the OFA method. Recent research has shown that OFA is not a more accurate indicator of a dog’s susceptibility to osteoarthri-tis as compared to PennHip. Until genetic markers are found that relate to hip dysplasia, the controversy will continue. Advantages to OFA are: 1) Does not require general anesthesia, 2) Radiographs do not have to be sent in for evaluation, 3) Less expensive to perform, 4) Most veterinarians can perform and 5) Most people understand grading methods. Disadvantages to OFA are: 1) Have to wait until two years old to be certified and 2) Allows breeders to pick and choose which dog gets certified since radiographs do not have to be sent in for evaluation. Advantages to PennHIP are: 1) Early evaluation (16 weeks), 2) A true laxity of the hip joint, 3) Better indicator of a dog’s susceptibility to osteoarthritis and 4) More accurate evalua-tion of the breed can be established since all radiographs have to be sent in. Disadvantages to PennHIP are: 1) Takes general anesthesia, 2) Requires veterinarian certification, 3) More expensive and 4) Most people have not accepted the method. On a personal note, my female Boykin had PennHIP evaluation at 22 weeks of age. Her DI for the left hip was 0.60 and the right hip was 0.61. She was scored in the 65th percentile. That means she is better than 65 percent in the Boykin breed, but 35 percent of the breed has better hips than she does. The mean for the Boykin breed 0.65, which could be inter-preted to mean that the Boykin breed is susceptible to osteoarthritis. Her sire was OFA excellent and her dam was OFA good. At two years of age, she was rated a good OFA. I used the PennHIP to decide whether I wanted to put her in hunt training. I do not think one system is necessarily better, but the PennHIP does allow earlier decisions about the dogs’ future. For more information on PennHIP click here and more information OFA click here.

Keeping Your Dog Safe this Halloween The American Kennel Club, Inc. Thinking about showing off your dog's "Howloween" spirit this year? The real trick is not to treat Halloween as just another day for your dog. The AKC reminds owners to follow certain guidelines for keeping pets safe during Halloween: If you choose to dress your pet up in a "doggie" costume, supervise him at all times. Make sure it fits properly and is not in the way of his breathing, eyesight or hearing. If your dog swallows any elastic or decorative items, it could cause intestinal obstructions or choking. For more tips on how to acclimate your dog to wearing a Halloween costume visit the Ask AKC archive.
Chocolate and sweets can be dangerous for your dog. Make sure all "people treats" are out of harm's way.
Walk your dog early, while it is still light outside, so you can be aware of any candy, wrappers or broken eggs on lawns and streets and make sure these "tempting treats" stay out of reach.
When you answer the door for trick-or-treaters, make sure pets are in a safe and secure room to prevent them from run-ning out, getting hurt and frightening your visitors. If you want your dog to greet the visiting ghouls and goblins, keep him on a leash.
Don't leave your dog unattended outside. Pranksters may target your dog with eggs, and passersby may be tempted to give your dog harmful treats and candy.
If you are having a Halloween party, consider confining your dog securely in one area of the house. Leave a radio or TV and lights on for the dog.
Be careful about where you place candles and Jack-o-Lanterns. They can easily be knocked over by your dog's wagging tail and either burn your dog or start a fire.

AKC Government Relations reports that the Pasadena City Council conducted a first reading of an ordinance to require the sterilization of all dogs and cats within the city limits. Limited exemptions will be provided. However, even with those exemptions, ANY dog that is impounded for ANY reason will be sterilized before being released, even if the owner has a valid intact dog li-cense and even for a first offense. Further, in order to breed a dog an owner must be in compliance with existing provisions for “dog kennels” which pro-hibits dog kennels within 1000 feet of any dwelling other than the owner’s home. It is likely this would have the effect of completely prohibiting breed-ing for all but the largest landowners in Pasadena. It is vital that responsible dog owners and breeders oppose this burdensome ordinance. Contact infor-mation is available at the bottom of this alert.
Pasadena City Council Meeting Date: Monday October 6, 2014 Time: 6:30 PM Location: Council Chamber, Pasadena City Hall 100 North Garfield Avenue Room S249 Pasadena, CA 91109
