Celebrating 2015-2016!The 2015-2016 school year is concluding with great success. We deeply appreci-ate all Whitmore Charter School parents, teachers and volunteers for their con-tributions in making WCSAT a wonderful place for learning for our students. I also want to recognize our Parent Booster Club (PBC), which consists of parents and teachers. They have provided many wonderful opportunities for families, including many of the ones listed below. We appreciate all of their hard work and efforts. During this school year so many great things happened including; excit-ing Winter and Spring Performances, assemblies for awards, Living Museum, theater and life skills. We enjoyed Life Skills pizza luncheons, Literacy Night, Round-Up, Spirit Days, Book Fairs, Dance-A-Thon, Wolf-Walk, Santa Breakfast, and a continued building of our school climate and spirit.

Let’s not forget the number of students who participated in district-wide activi-ties and received honors during the year for their Peace Essay’s, Masonic Essay’s, Rotary Student of the Month, Every Student Succeeding, Recycling Poster’s, and the list continues on with Whitmore student recognitions! Congratulations to all of you for these wonderful achievements! Hooray to another fantastic year and an amazing school!

Please look for a letter in the mail roughly two weeks before school starts wel-coming you and your child to our new school year. The letter will contain more information about our Back-to-School Night, Chromebook deployment and be-ginning of the year events. Students will again be receiving their devices during an assigned time at Back-to-School Night. Further information and forms will be sent home in the students Welcome Back packets in the summer.

I commend our wonderful staff and teachers for working so hard to provide our students with high expectations and a rigorous education. They continually go “above and beyond” to enrich our school with both their time, and talents. They have all spent many “extra” hours contributing to the success of our children and we are so grateful.

I, and the entire Whitmore Staff, wish you a very happy summer and hope that you enjoy your precious time during the summer with your children as much as we enjoyed our time with them during the school year.

Box Tops for EducationThe class with the most Box Tops collected this year was Mrs. Burnett’s kindergarten class! Congratulations! This class received a fabulous frozen yogurt treat party in May.

Please keep collecting Box Tops. Each Box Top is worth ten cents for our school. Over 8,000 Box Tops were collected this year - resulting in over $800 for WCSAT!

The Whitmore Charter Fine Arts Department is in need of donations. Currently the Fine Arts Department has an off-site storage facility at Stor-Quest Self Storage here in Ceres. Over the years, through grants and dona-tions the Fine Arts Depart-ment has acquired a vast

collection of costumes that are used at all grade levels at Whitmore. The team is grateful that this storage space is donated at no cost , yet the space is in need of storage shelves. The team wants to be sure they are organized so they may make good use of the costumes and other

items currently in inven-tory. The Team needs storage shelves and help with repairing a damaged clothing rack. Other items that are needed include, plastic hangers, wooden hangers, and skirt hangers. The Fine Arts Team wants to take good care of their collection of costumes,

etc., to ensure use of them by many students for years to come. If you are able to donate your time, resources, talent or items, please contact Gail Benge, Whitmore Charter Fine Arts Department Chair at [email protected].

Field Trip Highlights 1st Grade World of Wonders

First graders visited the Wow museum in Lodi in March. Students were able to experience science in action with hands-on exhibits about energy, electricity, and magnetism to list a few. Race cars, Legos, puzzles, and bubbles were on the equipment list for students to test different aspects of science. Our students were energized with all they learned during this trip.

4th Grade Capital Tour and California History Museum 4th graders visited the State Capital and the California History Museum in Sacramento in May. A surprise sighting of Governor Brown was exciting for the students. It was a wonderful trip with our students viewing the different rooms in the capital, pictures of past Governors, and memorials out in the park behind the capital. At the museum, students were captivated by all things California.

Modesto Nuts Literacy Program

During the month of March, Whitmore Charter’s kindergar-ten through 6th grade students teamed up with the Modesto Nuts Baseball Team to promote literacy. Students earned priz-es each week just for simply reading! Students who completed all 4 weeks of reading and turned in their order form received a free ticket to the Modesto Nuts game against the Stockton Ports on April 17. Whitmore students who attended the game were able to participate in a pre-game parade and received a free hot dog and drink! Students had a great time and the Nuts pulled out a win in the end, too!

Mrs. Burnett - We Wish You Well!After 34 years of working in the field of education, kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Sharon Burnett is retir-ing. On Wednesday, May 18th, students and staff celebrated Mrs. Burnett’s career during a school-wide assembly and dinner event that occurred later that day.

Mrs. Burnett has served as a dedicated teacher and mentor at Whitmore Charter School of the Arts and Technology since the school opened over 10 years ago.

On behalf of the WCSAT Parent Booster Club, we would like to honor this very special teacher for her unwavering committment to the students of Ceres during her career.

You will be remembered

most for inspiring all stu-dents to do their PERSON-AL BEST every day. Your legacy continues within all of your BEES and that is the greatest gift of all.

More than a teacher - you have given so much in 34 years of teaching to your students and their families. WCSAT is honored that you have been with us from the start. Thank you!

In April Whitmore Charter sixth grade students heard the call of the wild and journeyed up to Foothill Horizons Outdoor Education Center for a howl-ing good time. It was that time of the year when our sixth grade Whitmore Wolves get the chance to step out of their indoor classroom, and jump into an outdoor classroom with the oppor-tunity to use and complement what the Middle School teaching staff has been working on all year with them. And we are proud to say that our students didn’t miss a beat. In the true spirit of Whit-more Charter, sixth graders behaved exquisitely, and were more than ready to learn what the naturalists were teaching each day. P.E. coach, Mr. Caulkins and 6th grade teacher, Ms. Jones revealed

that in the staff dormitories rumors were circulating between the naturalists and teachers from the other participating schools that Whitmore students were among the brightest and best behaved at the outdoor school.

The fact that Whitmore Charter students were perfect, however, did not mean that they did not know how to get down and have some good clean fun. In fact, Whitmore Charter student, Ian Barnum, was one of the first students ever to be inducted into the Foothill Horizons “Polar Bear” Hall of Fame (an honor-able award recognizing the student that was willing to endure the freezing cold river water on their feet and hands for 30 seconds). Matthew Sanchez, Ed-

die Fuentes, and Jessica Scott also did a fantastic job of representing Whitmore Charter. Their nighttime presentation of the meteorology report was an “Emmy” worthy performance. All together the experience was educational, fun, and in the words of Whitmore Charter sixth grader Zack Martinez, “All sixth graders should go, it’s a great way for them to learn about nature.” Itzel Mendoza also expressed her interest in the geology lesson she learned about by energetically stating, “Foothill Horizons ROCKS!!!”

With this in mind, we thank all of the parents and staff that made this experi-ence possible, and we look forward to many more years of fun, engaging, and active education at Foothill Horizons.

On Thursday, May 12th students in grades K-12 danced to a variety of mu-sical themes at Modesto Junior College. Thank you to the Fine Arts Teachers for coordinating this performance and thank you to the Parent Booster Club for volunteering time to assist with a wide variety of event activities

Living Museum Middle-School celebrated the lives of nearly 150 different influential people during Living Museum Night on May 11, 2016. Students created multi-disciplinary projects that included a research report, historical fiction writing, a primary source analysis, cited quotations, an extension of their own choice and more! It was truly a splendid night to showcase academ-ics, technology, and the arts! We’re very proud of everyone who participated, and we appreciated the support from families and all staff members!

The 2015/2016 Parent Booster Club worked tirelessly this year to plan and coordinate the many fundraising events and activities that were provided to WCSAT students and families.

Thank you to the PBC Board, PBC members and many parents who volunteered their time and resources to support WCSAT teachers and students.

Please know that your efforts are greatly appreciated by the staff and the parents who are unable to particpate in the day-to-day activities ocurring on campus. The continued dedication of so

many, has allowed WCSAT stu-dents the opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of events this year; including, Round Up, Trunk or Treat, Giving Tree, Thanksgiving Food Basket Drive, Breakfast with Santa, a Dance-A Thon, a Wolf Walk, Literacy Night, and so much more.

These parent volunteers were also an integral part in the facilitation of many of the Fine Arts Department shows and performances that occurred throughout the year, including; the Fall Concert, the perfor-mance of Annie, the Spring Dance Recital, Fine Arts Night and so much more.

A hot dog lunch will be provided by the Parent Booster Club. Donations of food items are being requested. Refer to list below. Non-perishable items are due week of May 23-27. Fruit items are due the morning of June 2nd - cleaned, pre-cut, and in a dispos-able container.
