Keep in Touch

On behalf of our entire school community we congratulate you all on this very special achievement and we wish you a very successful school year ahead. We know you will make both your families and school community very proud!

Unexplained Absences

A reminder to all parents, that it is your responsi bility to notify the school of your child’s absence. You can do this in five simple ways:

• Through notifying the school through the QParent app. • Replying to the SOBS same day notification text

message for your child. • Phoning the school and notifying the office. • Sending a note to school with your child, signed and

dated. • Emailing directly: [email protected]

Absences that are ‘unexplained’ are recorded as such, and are highlighted in your child’s Report Card at the end of each Semester. Ideally we would like to see no child with an ‘Unexplained absence’ throughout the course of a regular

school year – currently we have 122 absences still to be explained by parents or carers.

P&C Meeting – What a great turn out!

It was great to see so many parent, citizens and staff our first P&C meeting for 2018 last Tuesday night. I hope many of you will return next month and become regulars, contributing to our school community. I encourage all member of our school community to engage with and support the P&C with their initiatives all students in our community benefit from both now and into the future. The next meeting will be the Annual General Meeting (AG M) and will be held on Monday, March 13 at 6.00pm in t he staffroom. All positions will be available to nominate for and we hope to see lots of parents at this meeting.

Upcoming Change advice by Logan Regional Council

Please find attached an image of the proposed new School Zone signs in Redgum Street. This work extends the school zone with 40km/h speed limits to west of the intersection of Wisteria Drive. Whilst we will continue to work closely with Council to improve and enhance the traffic conditions surrounding our school to ensure our student’s safety – driver behaviour is something we have little or no control over. I would implore all parents, carers and family members to please consider your own safe driving behaviours and ensure strict adherence to traffic regulations surrounding our school when picking up or dropping off your children. Warm Regards Mr Greg Brand, Principal

Prepstart

This week in Prep we are beginning PrepSTART. In this program we will focus on a different picture book every fortnight to improve our speaking and listening. Over the next two weeks we are learning about characters in stories, counting syllables (or beats) in words, and learning some new tricky words. We want to share the books we are reading at school with you at home. Every 2nd week your child will bring home a book on Monday. Please remember to bring your book back on Thursday so another child can enjoy it. At home, you can: • read the book to your child • talk about the pictures • have fun talking about the story When learning tricky words in Prepstart, the teachers follow a framework called STRIVE. This is an approach that is implemented across the school in all classes. Each class learns new words that come from the books that are read in class. For the next two weeks in Prep, we are reading “My Mum and Dad Make Me Laugh” and the words we are learning this week are “splendid” and “adore”. Splendid means “something that is very good” and adore means “something that you really, really love”. We are learning what these words mean and how to use them in our sentences when we talk. My challenge to the Prep parents is to use these words at home when speaking with your children and encourage the children to use these words as well. Eg: Your child may say, “I love Grandma”. You can scaffold and rephrase this by saying, “I can see that you adore Grandma”.

Vicki Wakefield Pre-Prep & Prep

LetterLand Update:

Dippy Duck, “d” is the letter and sound of the week. This is so exciting as now the children have learnt 3 sounds and they can learn to blend these into words such as Dad.

Prep Pirate Show . PAYMENTS CLOSE 28/02/18 Children are encouraged to dress up for the show, but must wear their uniform for the rest of the day. No swords, guns or other pirate weapons.

ELMER the ELEPHANT – 2KD

Knowledge of letter-sound correspondences is essential in reading and writing. In order to read a word: the learner must recognize the letters in the word and associate each letter with its sound.

This is the craft we are doing that goes with our sound of the week. We read Elmer Elephant and discussed how he is different to all other elephants because he is a patchwork elephant. Elmer the Patchwork Elephant has been a colourful children's favourite, inspiring them to be tolerant of others.

Student Leader Induction

On Friday 23rd February our student induction ceremony was held to formalise our 2018 school leaders into their leadership roles. Our special guests included Deputy Mayor Cr Cherie Dalley, Retired Principal Mr Mick Quinn, and 2013 Yugumbir State School captains Kahlia Lapham and Caleb Jackson. Deputy Mayor Dalley, Mr Quinn and Mr Brand all addressed the parade about aspects of leadership and congratulated them on their new roles. This year we started a new tradition, inviting past captains, who are currently in Year 12, to speak to the student body about how their leadership in primary school has affected their lives. Caleb and Kahlia delivered fantastic speeches to the students. All of the school leaders wore their newly embroidered and personalised school shirts and were presented with a badge (captains/music captains/house captains) and certificate of recognition.

Year 5 SEP are working very hard on their English Key Learning Area of spelling by using the Sound Waves program. This small group environment allows the children to focus on learning at their level and allows the teacher to pre-teach and scaffold their learning in a more focused and less distracted setting. The students here are working on the short vowel sounds.

If you have any uniform donations, please send to the office. We particularly need small sized shorts and underwear. Thank you for your assistance
