Westrive to keep these vast and vital forestsworking by pursuing a comprehensivestrategy to Retain , Sustain and Gain .

We help Retain our forest infrastructureby raising awareness of the threats toAmericas private working forests andby directly conserving critical forestlandsin partnership with landowners andcommunities in California, Oregon andWashington. We lead the country inthe use of working forest conservationeasements that ensure productive forestsstay working. And we help protect theintegrity of important public forests byconserving neighboring private landsthreatened by development. To date, wehave conserved more than 50,000 acresof forestlands.

We help Sustain forests by employingstate-of-the-art forest stewardshippractices on the thousands of acreswe manage in the Paci c West. We alsopromote exemplary forest managementto forest owners, policymakers and thepublic so people across the U.S. willbetter understand that forestry is key toecosystem conservation.

We help both landowners and the publicGain from working forests by developingand promoting new forest eco-services.These forest eco-services serve as thebasis for a sustainable business model that

yields nancial returns from managementpractices that reduce forest-based carbondioxide (CO 2) emissions, watershedquality and sh and wildlife habitat.

In this category, the Paci c Forest Trust isespecially focused on advancing the climatebene ts of forests. By leading regional andnational efforts to enact climate changepolicies that unite conservation andmanagement with market-based incentivesto reduce greenhouse gas emissions, weare promoting the positive role forests canplay to help mitigate global warming. Ourleadership in this area has led to the creationof a rst-in-the-nation, California-basedprogram that allows forest landowners toregister and sell CO 2 emissions reductionsgenerated by conservation and sustainablemanagement.
