STAND ON DECK AND WATCH AS THE COLUMBIA RIVER

shoreline changes from stark rock to vibrant forest. Feel the

spray of seawater as your expedition landing craft whisks you

through the surf to shore. Our ships in the Pacific Northwest

are nimble enough to tie up at the small docks along the river;

and they’re outfitted with landing craft to access locations

along Canadian coastal waterways untouched by tourist

infrastructure. We have been exploring here for decades, and

our fleet of four ideally sized ships will convey you to beautiful

places where larger ships simply cannot go.

Intimately scaled, with open bows and decks for unobstructed

wildlife viewing, they are the perfect platforms for off-the-

beaten-path experiences. All four vessels are equipped with

a roster of exploration tools that make expedition travel so

rewarding. A fleet of kayaks and paddleboards enable you to

get out on personal water-level adventures, and splash cams,

underwater video cameras, and video microscopes give you a

glimpse beneath the water’s surface in the Salish Sea.

THE PERFECT PLATFORM

NIMBLE EXPEDITION SHIPS THAT CAN TAKE YOU WHERE OTHERS CANNOT

“ We are thrilled with our newest ships, National Geographic Venture and National Geographic Quest, designed to give a complement of 100 guests the same intimate, inclusive experience the 62-guest National Geographic Sea Bird and National Geographic Sea Lion provide. They’ve introduced a generation to the profound joys of up-close, personal exploration with expert naturalists, and a collegial expedition community.

DESIGNED TO PROVIDE THE OPTIMAL ONBOARD EXPERIENCEEVERYBODY KNOWS THE MOST FAMOUS MANTRA IN REAL

estate: “Location, location, location.” When you’re aboard

one of our ships you’re always in prime real estate.

Whether standing on the open deck as the ship passes

through the colossal locks on the Columbia & Snake rivers

or scanning the shore for wildlife along British Columbia’s

Gulf Islands, you’ll experience the marvels of the region

from the ideal vantage point. Large windows in the ships’

dining rooms mean you never have to sacrifice a view,

and delicious meals are sourced locally, so you can taste

the best of the Pacific Northwest. In the lounge, where

camaraderie kindles, we gather daily for Recap when

naturalists share stories and answer questions about the

day’s events, and the expedition leader presents the plan

for the following day.

A REGION’S BOUNTY

WWW.EXPEDITIONS.COM 7

DISCOVER THE BOUNTIFUL PACIFIC NORTHWEST IN THE SHIPS’ DINING ROOMS,

on farms, in orchards, and at wineries. Our chefs provision our ships along our

route, shopping at local farms as part of a program that raises the bar on locality,

seasonality, and sustainability. Our certification as a Food Alliance Supply Chain

Ally ensures that food served aboard is produced by well-treated workers, derived

from humanely-raised animals, and that regional wildlife habitats are protected

and enhanced in its production. And our Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch

certification means that seafood served aboard our fleet is harvested in environ-

mentally responsible ways. For you, that means delicious dining that highlights the

best of the area.

On our Columbia and Snake Rivers voyage, enjoy a farm-to-table lunch in Walla

Walla on spring departures, or in the golden Hood River Valley in the fall, and

welcome a vintner or brewer aboard for a sampling in the ship’s lounge. And on

the British Columbia itinerary, learn about polyculture farming, the next level of

farm sustainability. Then enjoy a dinner entirely sourced from a local polyculture

farm. Eat well, and go home with a deeper knowledge of how delectable dining

and sustainability can live in harmony.

DOING WHATEVER IT TAKES TO MAKE YOUR EXPERIENCE EXTRAORDINARYWHETHER IT MEANS WAKING EARLY TO HELP YOU CAPTURE A WATERFALL

in the pre-dawn light, constantly manning spotting scopes to search

for killer whales along the coast, or staying up late for an impromptu

stargazing, our team is dedicated to revealing the Pacific Northwest

and ensuring you an exceptional experience. Benefit from the

personalities of an expedition leader, naturalists, a Lindblad-National

Geographic certified photo instructor, and on select departures, a

National Geographic photographer. Enjoy the company and perspec-

tive of a historian who can quote extensively from the journals of Lewis

and Clark, or an anthropologist who has lived among the Coast Salish

peoples of the San Juan Islands. Depending on your itinerary, you’ll

also travel with either a geologist or undersea specialist.

Learn more at expeditions.com/expertbios for full bios on our staff.

THE LINDBLAD EXPEDITIONS-NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ALLIANCE HAS

provided unique opportunities for guests to travel with engaging

experts. National Geographic photographers join select sailings

to help guests create incredible photos of the region’s famous

waterfalls, dramatic landscapes, and be active participants in the

expedition, sharing lunch,

dinner, or the deck rail with

you throughout the voyage.

THE POWERFUL COLUMBIA AND SNAKE RIVERS FLOW

through some of the world’s most geologically fascinating

landscapes, carved over time by tumultuous floods and

volcanic eruptions. Get an up-close look at towering canyons,

massive waterfalls, ancient petroglyphs, and rocky shorelines

where bighorn sheep roam free. Along the way you’ll also

travel through a series of eight locks, visit intriguing museums,

and savor this fertile region’s abundant bounty—from salmon

fished right out of these waterways to award-winning wines

and craft brews. Overlying it all: the intrepid spirit of Lewis

and Clark and the Corps of

Discovery. As you travel in their

wake, your historian will weave

tales of this dramatic episode

in American history.

FALL’S BOUNTY. Harvest time along the

Columbia and Snake rivers bursts with

flavors—and in our own dining room as we

provision the ship from local markets and

wineries. Photo ops abound with dark green

hillsides interrupted by reds, golds, and

greens as the leaves change.

SPRING FORWARD. Clouds of blossoms in

the orchards, vines straining to the sun—the

spring bloom in this region is extraordinary.

Enjoy the effervescence up close—whether

on a visit to a local vineyard for lunch and a

tasting, an optional whitewater rafting trip

down the White Salmon River, or in the river-

flanking vistas.

BRITISH COLUMBIA & SAN JUAN ISLANDS

YOU’LL EXPLORE NOT JUST ONE STUNNING SHORELINE

but many on this expedition. The newest state-of-the-art

ship in the U.S. Fleet threads the Salish Sea, tucks into

straits and sounds, and weaves through island groups

known for their charm: the San Juan Islands, Vancouver

Island, and the Gulf Islands. There is much

to see, and even more to do—from

wildlife sightings and personal forays

into nature by Zodiac, kayak, or

paddleboard, to active engagement

with the culture and beauty of the

First Nations, and cosmopolitan

Victoria. And, of course, we take

advantage of the Pacific Northwest’s renowned food

culture. Our team is committed to using ingredients

sourced within a 250-mile radius of where we explore—

from sustainable growers, producers, and fisheries.

Book early to ensure your preferred cabin category for 2020 as there are just two sailings this season, both aboard the newest ship in our fleet, National Geographic Venture. With generous open deck space and panoramic windows throughout, National Geographic Venture is the perfect platform to take in the October colors of the Pacific Northwest or gather on the bow for communal viewing of marine life.

We’ll feel history in the drumbeats at a moving,

private dance performance in the Big House at

the Centre. This afternoon pick your spot at the

deck rail and have your binoculars at the ready

as we search for wildlife, including, with luck,

killer whales.
