May 2016 You have been most fortunate as a congregation to have had the same minister for over 30 years. It speaks of a good, solid working relationship. It also means, however, that change can come as a bit of a shock to the system. The vacancy process can seem slow and laborious but at the end of the day it is always better to take things slowly and get things right than do things in haste and rue the day. Once elected on 5 June your Nominating Committee will carry a responsible load on behalf of you all. That means they need your prayers, your support and your understanding, especially when nothing seems to be happening. They will all be asked to respect the confidentiality of those applying and the subsequent deliberations so I would ask you all to respect that. Above all please keep praying that they will find the right person for Bowden and Melrose. You will want to know that the Kirk Session at its meeting on 19 May, having listened to members of the congregation after its meeting on 5 May, by a majority of 27 to 12, voted to ‘depart from the Church’s practice in relation to human sexuality in respect of the current vacancy.’ This means that the Nominating Committee may consider applications from any minister, including those currently in a civil partnership. Each application will be considered, however, on its own merits, so that the committee may select as its sole nominee the best person for the congregation. On Sunday 5 June we will be electing 13 people to serve on the Nominating Committee. (The number is set by Presbytery and is allocated by the size of the congregation.) This is a role that carries quite a responsibility. It will require several evening meetings, and perhaps day meetings during a Saturday as well as away visits on a Sunday. The Kirk Session has given thought to ensuring the Nominating Committee represents the congregation as accurately as possible in terms of interest and age profile. On Sunday 5 June, therefore, I shall be asking if you are happy that the Kirk Session appoint three nominees, those who worship in Bowden appoint two, the Guild one and those who attend the Family Service one. This leaves 6 to be elected from the floor of the meeting. It will be up to the congregational meeting to determine acceptance of that suggestion or not. Otherwise we will simply accept nominations from the floor to fill all the 13 posts available. If we receive more than 13 nominations we then have to proceed to a vote by paper ballot to determine the final 13. Please do make every effort to attend the service and the meeting on 5 June. To ensure as many as possible are able to attend there will be only one service that day at 11.00am in Melrose. Whichever way you decide to proceed on 5 June the method of being elected to the Nominating Committee remains the same. A person is proposed and seconded and that person has to indicate he/she is willing to be nominated. The first meeting of the committee will be on Wednesday 8 June at 7.30pm with the Presbytery’s Advisory Committee. In the meantime can I ask that you do keep Rev Bruce McNicol, your locum minister, informed of any people in hospital or otherwise needing a pastoral visit? It is also often in a vacancy that a congregation discovers there is a wealth of talent and ability that has been under-used because a minister has been in place. It belongs to us all to do our bit to keep up the morale, to attend worship regularly and generally go that extra mile to ensure that normal life continues in the congregation and parish. I look forward to being with you from time to time on a Sunday morning. I also look forward to ensuring that together we all do our very best for the congregation. With best wishes David Arnott

24th May, 2016. Dear Friends Greetings from Bermuda where today is Bermuda Day - the National Holiday. It's also the day when Bermudans begin swimming in the sea, regarding it as now sufficiently warm. I'm sure Scots could swim all year round. First of all a huge thank you for all that was organised for our departure and the generosity of the presentations to Judi and myself. We were quite overwhelmed and look forward to choosing a painting next year when the Strathearn Art Gallery in Crieff, owned by our son Scott and his wife Susan, will be hosting an exhibition by Chris Bushe whose work we both like. Unfortunately the painting will have to remain in Scotland until our return as the humidity here is very damaging to art work (and almost everything else!). However as I write this it's a very pleasant 75 degrees and we're already enjoying the beauty of the island. The days, and indeed weeks, leading up to our departure were perhaps inevitably hectic having been in Melrose over 31 years, and with Judi having been in Canada for five weeks for the birth of our first granddaughter Sophie. Both Lyndsey and Sophie are now doing well. However a great regret over the manner of our leaving was being unable to say goodbye personally to so many people, both at the wonderful reception at Melrose Rugby Club, but also to some of our older members in their homes. I'm afraid at the end of the day I just ran out of time! This letter then, as well as being a letter of thanks for your support, kindness and generosity, not just at our leaving but over all the years, is a farewell to those I could not say so personally.
Our time in Melrose, as minister of Melrose and then Bowden and Melrose, has been of the happiest and it was always going to be a wrench leaving, but that day was always coming. In the meantime we wish the congregation well in their search for my successor and without getting in his/her way hope to be able to visit on some of our return visits to Scotland. Best wishes to you all. Yours sincerely,
Alistair and Judi

EASTER SUNDAY Perhaps the changing of the clocks to British Summertime coinciding with the Easter Sunday service on the Saddle of the Eildons at 8a.m. could have been a daunting prospect for some prospective attendees this year. However, a group of thirty people met the challenge and enjoyed the service, along with some fifteen well behaved dogs. The weather wasn’t as favourable as in previous years but it stayed fair and there were breaks in the cloud, giving an opportunity for some interesting photos as noted below. As ever, bacon rolls and coffee were much appreciated in the Church Hall afterwards. (Photos courtesy of Alison Bacon)

ANNUAL CHURCH FETE The annual church fete this year in aid of church funds will be held in Bowden Village Hall on Saturday 13th August from 2-4pm.Stalls will include books, bottle, bric a brac, cake and candy,hand-made cards and plants. There will also be a raffle. Donations or help for this and other stalls would be gratefully appreciated. (Contact: Irene Armstrong 01835 823591). GUILD NEWS The Guild season for 2015/2016 came to a close with our AGM in mid-April. We are happy to report that our Fundraisers for Street Pastors have meant we are able to send £500 to this worthwhile charity. Thanks to so many who contributed in lots of ways towards this. Other charities have also benefitted with lesser sums, i.e. to Leprosy and Relationship Scotland Borders. The donations brought in regularly to the Food Bank in food gifts and cash are very welcome, and put to good use locally by those struggling to make ends meet, where their finances do not eek out from week to week. The Food Bank is ongoing throughout the summer and beyond.
At the AGM many thanks were expressed to the Committee for all their work behind the scenes in creating interesting and friendly afternoons for Guild members and friends.
Our AGM was wound up by Dr. Malcolm Lindsay, with a beautiful talk enhanced with fine photographs of butterflies and moths found in and around the Borders.
At the farewell service for Rev. Alistair Bennett, Isa Scott presented Judi Bennett with a pair of pretty cushion covers with a Scottish theme, sewn by Isa, with warm best wishes from the Guild members. Many of the Guild attended Alistair’s last service, and joined in with his gift from the congregation, and the convivial lunch thereafter.
Our Guild year finished on a very sad note, when our Honorary President, Greta Leitch, died following ill health. She had been a staunch member of Guild over many years, having held many posts, including Secretary, Vice President, and President (several times round). Greta was much loved by us all and will be sorely missed.
A meeting of those interested in creating the World Day of Prayer for 2017 have agreed that the three churches in Melrose will work together towards this event on Friday 3rd March 2017.
In September, three of the Committee are planning to attend the Annual Gathering of the Guilds throughout Scotland, in Dundee. We hope to give a report on this meeting to share with our members in the Autumn.
The Guild Committee has met to plan our provisional speakers for the coming season, and details will have been confirmed by the time the next Newsletter is in print. We intend to restart on Thursday 6th October. (A date for your diaries!) Our fund raiser for the coming year is “Care for the Family”. We look forward to welcoming members and new members to the coming season.
Elizabeth Fraser,
President.
CHRISTIAN AID WEEK 15TH – 21ST MAY 2016
President Jomo Kenyatta (1890 – 1978) was the founding father and the First
President when Kenya was among the early African nations to gain independence in
1963. He, like President Nelson Mandela suffered for his convictions and in the end
won through.
Since then Kenya has made enormous strides towards overcoming POVERTY,
IGNORANCE AND DISEASE. Between 1963 and the present day millions of
Kenyans have realised personal fulfilment and have seen their nation rise in
prosperity and significance in both Africa and throughout the world. However there is
still poverty ignorance and disease in Kenya and Kenyatta’s prayer and passion
have not yet been fulfilled
Christian Aid since its inception after the Second World War is also still dedicated to
the eradication of poverty ignorance and disease, wherever they occur and whatever
their cause.
Christian Aid Week in Melrose and district (comprising Bowden, Darnick, Gattonside,
Melrose, Midlem, Newstead and Tweedbank) is a beautiful exercise involving 75
volunteers working together. A begging envelope was delivered to the majority of
homes, a second visit was made to gratefully acknowledge much generosity. The
door to door collection was followed by a Coffee morning with stalls and a raffle in
the Corn Exchange, Melrose, and this year a Big Christian Aid Week Breakfast was
held in Midlem on Sunday 22 May to complete the programme.
Good money is raised (Coffee Morning £802.66; Breakfast £280 including Gift Aid;
House to House to date £2,832.10) Thank you, people of Melrose and district, on
behalf of those who are still poor, still lack educational opportunity, and are still often
ill. Thank you to all the volunteers in 2016 and in all those earlier years who have
identified with President Kenyatta and so many others in seeking to improve the lot
of those who are, for whatever reason, under-privileged.
Richard Gordon,
Chair of the Melrose and District Christian Aid Committee
FINANCIAL REPORT FOR 2015 Services of worship take place each Sunday in both Bowden & Melrose churches as well as a Family Service each month in Melrose. In addition there is a mid-week service monthly in Melrose followed by a lunch. The Pastoral Care Group becomes increasingly active visiting in Nursing and Care Homes, Sheltered Housing, and elderly living at home. A new Christian Aid Group has been formed with representatives from the other churches in the town. Our commitment of £63,921 in respect of Ministries & Mission Allocation to central funds was met in full. In addition to the above financial commitment the congregation continues to support the Al-Shurooq School for the Blind in Bethlehem with an annual grant of £2,000 to fund a holiday in the Galilee for the children. The congregation is partnered with the congregation of Chinamwali in the Presbytery of Zomba, Malawi and a grant of £2,000 this year enabled them to complete the building of a manse. In the same area the congregation continue to support a “Street Kids Project” providing education and meals to homeless children and also support with a grant a rural clinic. These are ongoing commitments but in addition this year the congregation gave a grant of £2,073 for rebuilding of homes in Nepal following the earthquake – the “Build a House” project of the World Mission Council. The congregation gave a grant of £1,000 to one of our young people to participate in “Project Trust” and he is presently spending a year working with them in Senegal. A number of special services and events were held to assist with support for the above projects. In addition the congregation supports the work of Christian Aid, giving a further donation this year of over £2,000 to the Syria Crisis Appeal and the Earl Haig Fund.
This year's accounts have been drawn up under the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator's (OSCR) guidelines, as instructed by the Church of Scotland. The principal source of income is offerings of £87,493 with our overall unrestricted income being £361,512 which was boosted by a significant legacy of £227,677. Our expenditure totalled £139,005 giving a surplus of £222,507 to our General Fund. As indicated above there was further fabric expenditure of £22,870 met by the Fabric Fund. This left a year-end balance of £40,447 on the fabric fund.
Gordon Chisholm,
Treasurer BOWDEN COMMUNITY CAFÉ This continues to meet on the third Wednesday of each month from 11-12noon in Bowden Village Hall. Attendance varies between about 15-30 and walkers are particularly welcome! Forthcoming dates are (all Wednesday) June 15th, July 20th and August 17th. BOOKS WANTED Melrose and District Community Council will run their annual Book Sale on 26th and 27th August in the Lower Ormiston Hall. Books are wanted for this on any topic, in saleable condition. Please contact Val Miller on 01896 822758 for further information.
From our Sports Correspondent MELROSE SEVENS 2016 Edinburgh Rugby lifted the famous Ladies Cup at The Greenyards on April 9th but the performances of several Scottish Club sides gave rise for optimism that one of them might break the professional dominance which has overshadowed proceedings in the past few seasons.
There were few surprises in the opening rounds with Marr, GHA and Watsonians making the early running. Watsonians, winners at Gala the previous week, in turn lost to the host club much to the delight of the increasingly growing and vocal, local crowd. As the tournament reached the semi-final stages, the quality of rugby improved and the first tie was a classic between two impressive Scottish sides in Jedforest and Edinburgh Accies. Jedforest, with the flying twins, Lewis and Gregor Young pulling the strings, prevailed in a highly competitive game running out 31-15 winners. I’m sure they must have felt that this was now their golden opportunity to win Melrose Sevens for the first time since 1974. In the second semi-final, Melrose pushed Edinburgh all the way in an eight-try thriller and at one point looked like they were going to do the unthinkable. The tie was ultimately decided by a missed conversion by Richard Mill from far out on the touchline with the very last kick of the ball. A predictably entertaining Final ensued between the experienced and highly motivated amateurs and the professionals. It was Jedforest who took an early lead before Edinburgh hauled themselves back into the tie with a converted try by their Tongan International Will Helu which gave them a slender lead at halftime: nothing in it and everything to play for. The second half started at a frenetic pace but gradually superior fitness began to tell. To their everlasting credit, Jedforest managed to keep themselves in the tie and with two minutes left on the clock, only a converted try separated both sides. The Edinburgh defence, at this stage, was looking extremely flaky and a possible upset of epic proportions was on the cards. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be and one final try by Sasha Tofilai clinched a 29-19 victory for Edinburgh and with it, the Ladies Cup for the first time. Huge credit must go to Jedforest and the other Scottish Club sides for showing us that the amateur Sevens game is very much alive and kicking at the home of Sevens, where the game was devised by Ned Haig and Davie Sanderson all these years ago. A huge thank you must go to the Club Sevens Committee and all the willing helpers who continue to make this one of the highlights of the Rugby calendar.

EILDON SINGERS The Spring concert on Sunday 15 May was a melodious balance of choral songs, a small Mass by Haydn, pieces by Mendelssohn and Gounod, fine instrumental playing by a string quintet with James Letham at the keyboard and Melrose's own splendid soprano soloist Claire Taylor. The enjoyable atmosphere for audience and musicians alike was due in no small measure to the hard work and ingenuity of conductor James Young who is bringing out the best in the voices under his leadership. The Autumn practices in The Ormiston are awaited with anticipation.

VOLUNTEERS We depend on our willing bands of volunteers for many of the duties around the church. There are teams of people who clean the church; serve coffee after the weekly service; welcome people to the church on a Sunday morning, hand out Orders of Service and take the collection - all at Melrose Parish Church. If you feel that you could spare an hour now and again to help out with any of these, please let us know through the office.
