Year of St. Joseph: On December 8 th , 150 years after his predecessor, Pope Pius IX, declared St. Joseph to be Pa- tron of the Universal Church, Pope Francis published a letter “With A Father’s Heart” describing the man- ner in which St. Joseph loved Jesus and with it opened a year dedicated to the foster father of the Savior. The Year of St. Joseph will continue now through to December 8 th , 2021 and during it all the faithful of the church are invited to contemplate the unique role St. Joseph was asked to play in Salvation His- tory and to remember the example he has set for us to imitate. Pope Francis draws on the wisdom of his prede- cessors and that of the Church itself in presenting St. Joseph as a “hidden person” who never placed himself at the center but who quietly and faith- fully discerned and obeyed the will of God. Saint Joseph as the humble and industrious craftsman has long been called upon as the patron of workers, and as the strong yet gentle protector of Mary and Jesus he is looked to as a model for all fathers to imitate. As tradition holds that Joseph was older than Mary, and he is not mentioned in the gospels as being present at the time of the public ministry of Jesus, it is assumed that he died when Jesus reached early adulthood at Nazareth and so Joseph is considered to be the patron of a happy death for it is safely assumed that he drew his final breath with Mary and Jesus at his bedside. The humble, behind the scenes help- fulness of Joseph is noted by Pope Francis as a most appropriate example during this pandemic when so many people, from store clerks to medical personnel, are all in their own quiet way are being so helpful to everyone in these unusually challenging times. The Pope’s letter is worth reading in its entirely and can be found under its Latin title “Patris Corde.” Pope Francis concludes the letter by recom- mending that all the faithful pray a simple prayer to St. Joseph throughout this special year:

Year of St. Joseph: On December 8th, 150 years after his predecessor, Pope Pius IX, declared St. Joseph to be Pa-tron of the Universal Church, Pope Francis published a letter “With A Father’s Heart” describing the man-ner in which St. Joseph loved Jesus and with it opened a year dedicated to the foster father of the Savior. Thank you for your generous support of our parish!

Eucharistic Adorationwill begin in the Main Church

immediately following the 8:30 AM Mass.

The Church will remain open until 10 AM, and will reopen at 4:30 PM.

The Blessed Sacramentwill be available for prayer via live stream in between.

This has been our custom the past few months as it is unsafe to remain in one place for an extended period

of time due to increased risk of transmission of the virus.

Benediction will begin at 5 PM; join us in-person or via live stream.

Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.To you God entrusted his only Son; in you Mary placed her trust; with you Christ became man.

Blessed Joseph, to us too, show yourself a father and guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage, and defend us from every evil. AMEN

The End of Christmastide: On Tuesday of this week, the secular word will observe Ground Hog Day, but February 2nd is a much more meaning-ful day in the year for Christians in that it marks 40 days since the Solemnity of the Lord’s Nativity and concludes “Christmastide” with the celebration of the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. As at the presentation of the Christ child in the Temple Simeon recognized him to be a light to the na-tions, this is a day when it is customary

to bless candles for use in church and at home during the year. It is also the last day on which the creche contain-ing the Holy Family is displayed and candles should shine in windows of Christian Churches and homes. Once these remnants of the celebration of the incarnation are put away for an-other year it will be time to begin to prepare for the start of the season of Lent. The candles blessed on the Feast of the Presentation are traditionally used on the following day, the Feast of St. Blaise, for the blessing of throats, however, in these pandemic times only a general blessing from the sanctuary at the conclusion of Mass on February 3rd will be appropriate for reasons of safety.

Why does the Church honor St. Joseph?

Catholics do not worship saints, but ask for their heavenly intercession before God and seek to imitate their virtues here on earth. The Catholic Church honors St. Joseph as the foster father of Jesus. He is invoked as the patron saint of the Universal Church. He is also the patron of workers, father, and a happy death.

WE ARE IN NEED OF VOLUNTEERS— ESPECIALLY MEN—

LIFE LINES REFLECTIONEvery great religious revival in Ameri-ca has led to an advance in civil rights — from the Declaration of Indepen-dence and the Bill of Rights to the end of slavery and the pursuit of racial equality. But all this has been achieved in the face of established power struc-tures strongly and often violently op-posed to these rights.

This is the time for choosing — choos-ing whether as Catholics we will stand together to keep open the doors of re-ligious liberty. If we do so, then we will make possible the next great awaken-ing in America that will bring us closer to building a culture of life and civili-zation of love.
