DECEMBER 29, 2019

Dear Friends,

Once again, a blessed Christmas to all!

I think it is great that the feast of the Holy Family always falls within a few days of Christmas. It challenges us to find holiness where we sometimes least expect it. For most of us, we know our family better than other people do. We often see their faults and blemishes more quickly than others. If we are looking, we can usually see their gifts and talents more quickly too. But the stress of holiday preparation can sometimes shift our focus, and tensions can rise. This feast reminds us that holiness is possible in families, not just in the holy family. But that holiness is not found automatically.

We need many of those attitudes and traits mentioned by St. Paul in today’s reading from Colossians: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, bearing with one another, and great forgiveness. In these attitudes and actions, love is made known and holiness can happen. These characteristics remind us that holiness is not about always being perfect. It is more a matter of attentiveness to each other, and a desire to follow God’s will.

On Holy Family Sunday, we look to Jesus for direction in our way of living and our way of loving: “As the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do.” There is no better example.

Special thanks to all who have brought the joy of Christmas to others through our parish: thank you to all who brought gifts to share through our Be an Angel program and Advent Giving tree; thanks to all who have assisted in our parish liturgies—our serv-ers, lectors, extraordinary ministers, ushers, and especially our choirs in their special preparation for Christmas; thank you to all who contributed to the Christmas flowers and all who helped to decorate the church for Christmas. May God bless your gener-osity.

A Blessed Christmas and joy-filled New Year to all!

Peace and blessings, Father Tom +++ Queridos amigos,

Paz y bendiciones, Padre Tom

DECEMBER 29, 2019 FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY, AND JOSEPH A change in plans Dreamers can’t explain themselves. People ask: “How could you? Why did you?” And dreamers shrug and smile. They make the sacrifice, they take the risk, they think differently, they become someone unimaginable. Ask any artist or composer, star athlete or entrepreneur, priest or monk or missionary: How did you become what you are? They shrug and smile, because it’s hard to tell someone who hasn’t heard the voice themselves: I talk to angels, I listen to the universe, I close my eyes so I can see more clearly. Sit and pay attention to the holy silence. Today's readings: Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14; Colossians 3:12-21 or 3:12-17; Matthew 2:13-15, 19-23 (17). “Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you.”
