Our Parish Family

Dear Parishioners,

“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those

who dwelt in the gloom a light has shone.

You have brought them abundant joy and great rejoicing. For the yoke that

burdened them, the pole on their shoulder and the rod of the taskmaster you have

smashed.

For a child is born to us, a son is given us; upon his shoulder dominion

rests. They name Him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of

Peace.”

Thus are the words of Isaiah the prophet as he looks for the deliverance of

his people when a child is born and a son is given. For us who are celebrating the

Mystery of the Incarnation, we see these words being fulfilled in the birth of Jesus

Christ. And so, we who proclaim this child who was born to us, this son who was

given to us, truly rejoice today as God’s Word takes flesh and dwells among us and

becomes that Wonder-Counselor, that God-Hero, that Father-Forever, that Prince

of Peace. As we are filled with joy this day, we join the angels in Bethlehem when

they appeared to the shepherds that first Christmas and proclaim as they did, “For

today in the city of David a Savior has been born for you who is Christ and Lord.”

On behalf of the parish staff, school administration, teachers, and all personnel, I

want to wish each and every one of you a very Blessed and Merry Christmas.

I also want to thank the many parishioners who remembered the Church,

School, and myself personally with your many prayers, generous gifts, and your

kind remembrances. It is a time like this that reminds me of what a great parish

the Church of St. Peter is. Thank you! As pastor of this parish, you truly are

God’s Christmas gifts to me. You contribute to my life in so many differing ways.

When we think of Jesus appearing in the flesh that first Christmas, I often think of

the many times He continues to appear to me in the flesh through each of you, your

love, your support, and your kindness. May God continue to fill all of us with His

grace of Christmas and truly experience His love and His presence in all of us.

As we look ahead in our celebration of Christmas, the next weekend, De-

cember 31st-January 1st, is the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God. This is a

Holyday of Obligation for us. Fortunately, this Holyday falls on a Sunday so our

attendance will be greater than what it usually is when it falls on a weekday. Since

it falls on a Sunday, our weekend schedule will remain the same, namely, Decem-

ber 31st—5:00 p.m. Mass; and January 1st—8:00, 9:30, and 11:00 a.m.

ures at the end of the year, that these donations must be given with Thursday, De-

cember 29th as the cutoff date for them to be recorded for 2016. Thank you for

Perpetual Adoration Chapel

The St. Peter Church is never completely empty. Even at the oddest of hours, you can find at least one

car in the parking lot. For every hour of every day for the last 30 years, hundreds of volunteers have been

praying before the Most Blessed Sacrament in the St. Peter Perpetual Adoration Chapel. This time with

Jesus is spent any way you want. Bring your own prayer books, use the books in the chapel, read the Bi-

ble, pray the rosary, or just enjoy the peace that comes from simply being in the Presence of God. Perpet-

ual Adoration in a parish is not just for a day, a week, a month, or a year. Rather, it is for always. It is not

temporary, but ongoing, lasting, permanent. To participate, please contact Mary Voorhis at (217) 224-

0084 or Gina Wolf at (217) 257-9966 for more information. There is an immediate need to fill the fol-

lowing time slots – Tuesday 1:00-2:00 a.m., Saturday 1:00-2:00 a.m., 2:00-3:00 a.m., 3:00-4:00 a.m.,

6:00-7:00 p.m. (3rd Saturday), 8:00-9:00 p.m. (alternating weeks), and Sunday 2:00-3:00 a.m.

Soup Kitchen

Local soup kitchens are important year-round, but absolutely critical during tough winter months. For

many individuals, their soup kitchen meals are their only source of fruits and vegetables. Luckily, our

Quincy area has Horizons Soup Kitchen & Food Pantry at 224 S. 8th Street. As part of our St. Peter Soup

Kitchen Ministry, volunteers staff Horizons on the first, third and fifth Mondays of each month. There are

three different shift options available: 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.; 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; and 1:00 p.m.

to 3:00 p.m. To lend a helping hand, please contact Sharon Mays at (217) 224-5169 or

[email protected] for more information. With Horizons’ recent move to a new facility, Sharon now

utilizes 28 volunteers each Monday to effectively staff the soup kitchen.

John Ley, Kathy Harman, Angela Lepper Fr. Leo’s column continued

I hope that you enjoy the picture on our bulletin cover this week. There is an explanation behind it and I would be more than happy to tell you about it. Just a hint that Santa is in front of the altar of the Church of St. Leo the Great.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE: It was the second day after Christmas vacation. Sr. Rita had told her 21 second graders on the first day after vacation; “Tomorrow we will visit the crib in Church. How about everyone bringing some little gift for the Infant Jesus? Nothing expensive; nothing too big. Bring it in a sack so nobody will see your gift until after Jesus sees it first in the crib.” Tomorrow came. Twenty-one little hearts were beating faster than usual as they took turns placing their gifts at the feet of the Little King—candy bars, a whis-tle, a baseball, a toy computer, and some fruit, and even a can of mixed vegetables. But standing out was a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, about 7 or 8 inches high. Billy put up his hand when Sister asked whose gift that was. She asked him why he had chosen that gift. Billy replied, “I think Jesus would like to see what He is going to look like when He grows up.”

My Christmas Blessing to you:

My God, who willed that the great joy of His Son’s saving Birth, be announced to shepherds by the An-gel, fill your minds with the gladness He gives and

makes you herald of His gospel. And may God, who by the Incarnation brought together the earthly and heavenly realm, fill you

with the gift of His peace and favor and make you sharers with the Church in heaven.

Merry Christmas,

Gingerbread Traditions

Did you know that we have a tradition at St. Peter School? For

the last 30 years our Kindergarten students have constructed a

gingerbread house with their parents or chosen loved one.

Many of the St. Peter School alumni still talk about the time

when they made their gingerbread houses when they were in

Kindergarten. In fact, some have reported that they still have

their creation and they bring it out every year as they decorate

for Christmas!

Parish in Action A Matter of Social Concern

One of the most beloved traditions of St. Peter

Parish is the Social Concerns Committee's annual

cookie sale each December. Thanks to your gener-

osity, the cookie sale was a success!

The Social Concerns Committee provides direct

assistance (gas money, food vouchers, etc.) for

needy persons in our area and arranges for speak-

ers on a wide variety of social issues. The group

funds it's work through Fifth Sunday collections and

the December cookies sale. The group also spon-

sors monthly collections to benefit Ladies of Charity.

Social Concerns Thank You to Parish!

The Social Concerns Committee would like to express a very big Thank You to all who baked cookies and

helped at the cookie sale last weekend. The cookies were all sold and enjoyed by the many buyers.

A special thanks to Mary Brahler and her family and crew who baked the cinnamon rolls. This money helps the

many projects of the committee in the name of St. Peter Parish.

The Giving Wreath also showed the generosity and stewardship of our parish. An overwhelming number of gifts

were distributed to needy families by various social agencies in town. Thank you to Christy and Mike Holm for

once again contacting the agencies, making the tags, and sorting the gifts so that they get to the right places on

time. This is truly the Spirit of Christmas!

Giving Wreath 2016 St. Peter Parishioners donated

over 900 gifts to make Christmas

merry for area families.

Crocheters Who Care

Thank you to the members

of our St. Veronica’s Guild

for using their time & talent

to make our prayer shawls

for the ailing members of

our parish and Christening blankets for infants baptized in

our parish and adults coming into our Church through the

RCIA process. These items are knitted, crocheted, or

sewn, and they all are expressions of healing, outreach

and love. As guild members work, they pray for the person

who will be the recipient. Completed items are blessed before distribution.
