Baptism -The Church shares the joy of families in the birth of children and with their parents takes seriously the responsibility of bringing them up in the faith. Parents seeking baptism for their children are to attend Bap-tismal Preparation Class. This can be arranged by calling the parish office. Parents should be registered members of the parish. Godparents, those who represent the Church in the life of the child, must be practicing Catholics. If they are married, they must have been married in the Church, practice the faith regularly, and must obtain a sponsor certificate from their home parish. Please choose Godparents with these criteria in mind.
Anointing of the Sick-This sacrament is given for those facing serious illness or surgery, and for those of ad-vanced years. If you or a family member is planning to enter the hospital, please see one of the priests follow-ing Mass if you would like to receive this sacrament.
Marriage-This great sacrament of vocation is a joyous time, but also a time of very serious spiritual prepara-tion. The responsibility assumed by the couple and the Church is significant. While many focus on the day of the wedding, we seek to prepare for the second day and beyond. The Bishops of NJ have adopted a policy to assist in this preparation. Attendance at Engaged Encounter, Pre-Cana, or another approved marriage prepa-ration program, and individual sessions with a priest or deacon are required of all couples. Couples should contact the Rectory one year in advance of the intended marriage, and before finalizing other details of the Wedding particularly reception facilities.

THE NATIVITY OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST
JUNE 24, 2018
From Father Doug: As July 1 approaches there is some concern and many questions about the future of our two parishes in a new reality as linked parishes. There is also some confusion about what that means. The two independent parishes are simply linking, we are not merging. This is very different from what happened when Our Lady of Peace and St. Bonaventure parishes merged to become one parish with two churches. We will remain two independent parishes who share a pastor. Finances and governance will remain completely independent, but there will be some sharing of resources and expenses. Our joint interview committee with equal representation from both parishes are in the final in-terviews for a Business Manager who will be split between the two parishes as I will be spending equal time in each parish. Obviously, expectations will have to change as to what the Pastor can and should do. By Canon Law the Pastor retains responsibility for things that are delegated to other staff members. Most financial and facility issues will be the responsibility of the Business Manager with the supervision and close collaboration of the Pastor. The challenge will be that I will be present half as much as I have been at St. Pio Parish, and half as much as Father Mike has been at Sacred Heart Parish. I will continue to live at the priest resi-dence at St. Pio Parish, in no small measure because of my family, the cats! Their “assistance” in the business of the office at Sacred Heart would likely not be appreciated. I will be spending equal time in each parish office while rotating celebration of Masses in each parish. Though the GPS says 6.2 miles between the churches, as you all know in the summer and particularly on weekends that can be a long 6.2 miles. Many of you re-member when Father Mike was temporary administrator of St. Pio Parish after the pas-tor’s retirement a few years back. As was the case then, we will be relying on the gener-ous presence of our assisting priests and more delegation to our deacons. The future has the possibility of many different ways that independent parishes can cooperate in shared ministry while remaining independent. That will progress slowly and largely as the options become clear to the Pastoral Councils of each parish. In the im-mediate future the priority will be keeping things steady through these summer months when our summer parishioners are with us. Also deserving mention is that much attention should be given in great gratitude to Father Mike for his ministry at Sacred Heart and his constant support of St. Pio Parish. We are all very grateful to God for the gift of his priesthood, and personally I am very grateful for his gracious help during this time of transition. All of our prayers go with him for a very happy and healthy retirement.
