The Parishes of Fr. Joe’s article continued on Page 3 MALLIA’S MOMENTS By Fr. Joe Mallia I will be honest with you, prior to coming to your two parishes, I never really looked at fields before nor cared much about how planting of crops really took place. I would pass by planted fields from time to time and maybe I was attracted to the perfectly aligned rows of corn but beyond that, I really was not all that interested. I have learned a lot in my time here as far as farming goes and it has helped me understand today’s Gospel passage a bit more, actually. Unlike today’s farmers with various equipment which helps them to get the most yield out of their fields, farming in the time of Jesus was not very scientific. It really was a rather hit and miss kind of approach. The farmer may seem a bit careless with the seed, throwing it almost haphazardly here and there. The parable tells us that some landed on the path and others among the weeds and some in good soil. To the farmer, it is all the same since the intent was to plow the whole area. At that time, first came the seed and then the plowing rather than the other way around. So, when it fell on the path, the farmer would have planned to plow the path as well. You will notice that the seed grows anyway, but the harvest is not very good. The lesson for us in this story is not about farming, but about being willing to cast out the Word of God onto the soil of hearts in the world and also about being willing to do the work afterward to try to help it grow. Though many are willing to tell people what is in God’s Word (often in a condemnation), they are not willing to do the follow up in trying to help it grow and take root in the heart of the other person. It is the willingness to do the hard work that results in a better harvest, both in ourselves and in others. But sometimes the hard work does not pay off the way we want. Look at some fields and you will notice how plants grow at different rates and in some places not at all. It’s the same seed, the same farmer, the same process, but some grows well and some does not. It’s not the fault of the farmer or the seed or the process, it’s just that the soil is not receptive. That does not stop the farmer from trying to include that portion in the process with the hope that maybe this year, he will be able to get a harvest out of that portion. Here too we have a lesson to learn. Just because some people are slower to accept the Word of God in their hearts, we should not give up but keep trying to provide seed for their hearts. At some point, it may just take root. Afterall, it is only in the planting that a harvest is possible. As we pray this week, let us ask God for the grace to keep planting and doing what we can to help that seed grow. Have a great week. St. Augustine Festival We are just under a month away from the festival and there is much to do before we are really ready to prepare to welcome people to our parish. I want to again urge you to return your raffle tickets and also to sign up to help in some way during the festival. The most important thing you can do is to tell people that the festival is on and encourage them to attend. We are doing all that we can to make it a fun and safe event. We are moving things around to allow for more space between tables, dinner on Saturday night will be provided by Richmond Meat Packers and on Sunday by Achatz. Both will provide a plated dinner to assure safety. This year’s festival provides us a unique opportunity to reach out to more people and maybe reconnect them to the parish. Let’s not miss out on this great opportunity to plant seeds in the soil of their hearts. CSA Just a reminder that this year you will be contacted directly by the archdiocese about the CSA campaign. You will be able to donate in various ways and as in the past, the overage from the goal amount is returned to the parish. If you simply do what you did last year the parish will be even better off as the target for every parish has been reduce by 15%! That ends up being a 15% increase in return for simply doing what you have done in the past. I want to thank you in advance for your generous support of the parish. St. Augustine School There is still time to register for school in the fall. Although the staff is not in the office every day, they do check their messages and are more than happy to return your call and give you the information that you need to be part of the St. Augustine School family. MALLIA’S MOMENTS

By Fr. Joe Mallia

I will be honest with you, prior to coming to your two parishes, I never really looked at fields before nor cared much about how planting of crops really took place.

MALLIA’S MOMENTS Continued from Page 1

Plans are in place to move forward with in-person, all day classroom instruction. By limiting the class size to around 15 students, we are able to provide proper social distancing and give your child the individual attention they deserve. In uncertain times, the stability of our school is a very important aspect of your child’s educational and emotional well-being. Please consider registering today. It’s almost that time With only a couple of weekends left, it’s almost time to say goodbye. Both parishes have planned an informal reception so that we can do that face to face. I want to let you know how wonderful these past four years have been. New adventures are fun, but they are only good if the foundational experiences of the past prepare you for what lies ahead and you have more than done that for me. I look forward to thanking many of you personally. I also know that you will all do your best to continue to support the parishes, move the ideas we have forward and most importantly, to welcome Fr. Phil as your new pastor. In the months ahead, he is going to need your support and wisdom as the diocese moves forward with the Family of Parishes process. The challenges may seem great but God is greater than any challenge and your collective strength is more powerful than any obstacle. I have faith in you and in God’s work in you to move forward and create a better future than your past. God bless you all.

Fond Farewell to Fr. Joe

St. Augustine and Holy Family parish families are invited to say your personal good-byes and wish Fr. Joe well in his

new assignment. A farewell reception for Fr. Joe will be held at each parish on:

Sunday, July 19, 2020

following the 11:00 a.m. Mass at St. Augustine

Sunday July 26, 2020

following the 10:30 a.m. Mass at Holy Family

Thank You

Thank you to St. Augustine and Holy Family parishes for the donations to the Baby Bottle Bounce back through the envelopes this

year, instead of Baby Bottles, (due to Covid). You have donated to Spero over $1600 dollars. Spero Pregnancy Center will put these needed funds to great use in their very important mission of saving Babies lives. You can still donate to Spero by placing your donation in the Spero envelope or a plain envelope with Spero written on the envelope, and place it in any of the locked envelope boxes in church, the drop box at the Life Center entrance at Holy Family, the back door of the St. Augustine rectory, or turn them into the office.

Many thanks to all who donated and God Bless All,

Mary Jo Ballor & Marlene Brown St. Augustine & Holy Family Christian Service

F A I T H M A T T E R S

Congratulations to those who have celebrated their First Holy Communion!!!

The Parable of the Sower MT 13:1-23 OR MT 13:1–9

On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd stood along the shore. And he spoke to them at length in parables saying, “A sower went

out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. But some seed fell on rich soil and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. Whoever has ears ought to hear.” TAKE TIME TO CHAT What does a plant need to grow? What do you need to grow in faith? Have you ever planted seeds? What happened? Retell this parable in your words. Take turns and be creative. FAMILY FUN Visit a Local Pilgrimage Site or Historic Church The Archdiocese of Detroit has a rich history and many interesting places to visit. Consider getting some families together to visit a local pilgrimage site or historic church in the Archdiocese of Detroit. Call ahead for mass times and ask if someone can give you a tour after Mass. Here are some suggestions: Solanus Casey Center, Detroit Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Detroit National Basilica Shrine of the Little Flower, Royal

Oak Ste. Anne, Detroit Sweetest Heart of Mary, Detroit St. Joseph, Detroit Old St. Mary's, Detroit Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Detroit St. Aloysius, Detroit

Holy Family Parish

Holy Family Mass Intentions

Intercessory prayer reflects God’s own character of outgoing love and mercy. Please pray for the intentions of the following:

Jessica Phillips (l)

The prayer list was updated. If someone who was on the prayer list came off that still needs to be on the prayer list, please contact the parish office either by phone or by email at [email protected].

As we continue to gather for Mass, it is important to ensure that proper measures are taken for cleaning and disinfecting the spaces we gather in. After each Mass, all pews are disinfected along with the frequently touched surfaces in the worship space, gathering space and the restrooms. In order to complete the disinfecting process, it is imperative that we have volunteers set up for each weekend Mass. Currently, there are open slots for each weekend Mass. Please prayerfully consider volunteering and sign up using Sign Up Genius at

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080b44a9ae2ba6fb6-after. You can also call either parish office.

6:40 p.m. prayer

Since February of 2012, our parishioners, family, friends and many others have been connected spiritually through a 6:40 p.m. prayer time, stopping what we are doing, praying the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be for the parishioners of Holy Family and St. Augustine. If you are in our parish buildings at 6:40 p.m., you will often hear a number of phones going off, sounding the alarm for the 6:40 p.m. prayer time. When our alarms go off elsewhere as we go through our day, this gives us the opportunity to pray as a family, a group of friends or even co-workers, also creating an opportunity for us to evangelize. Last week, Fr. Joe invited us to use the 6:40 p.m. prayer time for the intentions of our nation. Prayer cards were available after the Masses. If you did not get one, no worries! There are more prayer cards available in church and the prayer can be found as well on our FaceBook page. Please join us in reciting this prayer for our nation and invite other family members and friends to join us on this mission of prayer and intercession.

St. Augustine School

At last, our career in elementary and middle school has to come to an end. We are starting a new chapter of our lives in the fall, and the dreaming of going to high school is now becoming a reality. The transition between middle school and high school can be extremely challenging, but I know we can all get through this. Every teacher here has prepared us for the years ahead of us. One thing for sure is that without these teachers, I would not be where I am today. I would like to acknowledge each of them for all their hard work and effort they put in for us to be successful.

Mrs. Perry, I want to thank you for setting a great foundation for the rest of my years as a student. You taught me the very basics from reading and counting from 1-100, and you showed me that it takes work and commitment to learn the basics, so I could build on them in the rest of my years at St. Augustine. I really enjoyed you as a teacher, and I am going to miss passing you everyday in the hallways.

Even though Mrs. Jennings is no longer teaching at this school, I still want to recognize her for her generosity and kindness she showed towards everyone. She was always there to cheer us up when we were down, and she definitely knew how to make us laugh. She used to tell us that at night she flew around on her broom with her dog, and we would laugh and laugh and laugh.

Mrs. Viviano is the teacher who is able to take you to a whole new level in your faith. My relationship with God had been strengthened immensely from the beginning to the end of second grade. I had a whole new understanding of what God has done for me. I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for guiding me in my faith and for showing me a whole new level of Catholicism.

Thank you to Mrs. Kauffman. She taught me how to master the facts, and she has instilled a love for math in me. She pushed me to my limits and I really appreciate that. Thank you for pushing me and always believing that I could do more.

The one and only Ms. DeJonckheere! Thank you for making fourth grade the best fourth grade class ever! You were always putting a smile on our faces, and I still remember some of those tricky riddles you would give us at the end of the day. I do remember that we named the one math group the Blue Dinosaurs. Pretty cheesy, I know. Being in Ms. DeJonckheere’s class was always exciting, and we always had something new to do. Thank you Ms. Dejonckheere for never failing to make me smile, and for making my journey at St. Augustine a very memorable one.

Mrs. Grifka always had a smile on her face. She would always say good morning to our class and seeing her smile would make me want to smile even if I was having a bad day. She was so unselfish, and she would drop anything she was doing to help us out. Thank you for being there for us and for always offering help when we needed it.

We were Miss Pecorilli’s first class at St. Augustine. After our class, she probably questioned a lot of things we would do! We were extremely rambunctious, and it would take a lot for us to calm down. We have always been a boisterous class, but I feel in sixth grade, we were more than ever. On behalf of our class, I am very sorry for all the headaches we caused. I want to say thank you so much for putting up with us. We set the bar for the classes behind us, so they should only be getting better! Thank you for everything you have done for me as a student!

Ms. Savoyard always had some sort of new, exciting science lab to do with us. We did so many of them from making our own bouncy ball to balloon rockets. Her class was always lively and entertaining, and she has inspired me to continue to grow in my knowledge about science and math. Thank you for being such an exceptional teacher, and I am going to miss you educating me about math and science. I always used to look forward to your class, and I’m truly going to miss that. Being in Mrs. Nader’s class, there was always something new every day. One day we would have B.O. talks and another day we were learning about how “Here” and “There” are never the subject. She strengthened my skills in ELA profoundly. This was one of my weaker subjects, but with the help of Mrs. Nader, I was able to change that. Thank you for helping me to enhance my skills in ELA and being there for me when I was struggling. I would like to say thank you to Mrs. Lenn also. She was always coming around and checking in on us. She is a very kind-hearted person, and she would drop anything and come watch us do something. Thank you for being an amazing principal, and I am going to miss seeing you throughout the hallways. And to Father Joe, I still remember the first day you walked in and said, “Hello geniuses.” I will never forget that, it was a lasting impression that made me smile. You also told me not to use the word like so much. Thanks for the lesson on grammar and for instilling the love of God in me. I look forward to the day when I get to celebrate my Confirmation with you. I would also like to say a very special thank you to my parents. You guys have sacrificed so much for me to do the things I love. It may not seem at times how appreciative I am, but I could not be more grateful for everything you have done for me. You have inspired me to do the things I love, and you push me to my limits everyday. I am beyond blessed by such amazing parents. I love you guys so much! Lastly, I would like to say a thank you to all of my classmates. You guys have truly been like my second family. In the next few years, let us not forget the great memories we have created, the challenges we have faced and overcome, the steps we have taken to get here, and the mistakes we have learned from. We have been so closely bonded throughout the years, and I hope that relationship can still remain strong when we go to high school. We all are going to do great in these next years of our life, so let's embrace our bright futures that God has planned for us. Keep being yourselves, and trust me, you will make a ton of new friends. I’m going to miss you all a lot, but let’s take on this new journey. The next four years of our lives will be challenging, but I know we can do it. God has a special plan for all of us, and He will be guiding us through it all. Thank you everyone for making this journey a memorable one, I could not have done it without you all by myself. I will miss being a part of this school and most of all, the St. Augustine school family. We are forever bonded in history, and we will always remember the coronavirus as stealing our celebration for us! But this lesson has taught us not to take anything for granted, slowdown to enjoy the little things, and be thankful for all our blessings big and small. Because of this, I will always have a special place in my heart for this school and all of you! May God bless us all, and I being a part of this school is a huge blessing. I will miss you all!
