APNA MEETING CANCELLED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE July 2020 After 27 years as Editor of the Parkster NewsLetter, I find that I can no longer fulfill this role. This is a difficult decision but for several years, I have been wondering how much longer I could continue writing and publishing the Parkster. Due to COVID-19, all but two of our Parkster delivery volunteers have opted out of distributing newsletters to their route so I have taken on the lion's share of that task as well. However, the neighborhood now has Nextdoor where Azalea Park Neighborhood and Hollywood Park Neighborhood residents (there are currently 822 members representing 561 households) can post information specific to our neighborhood or they can choose to post to surrounding neighborhoods to reach a bigger audience (potentially 18,133 members). We also have an Azalea Park Neighborhood Association Facebook page where information can be posted. If you live in Azalea Park or Hollywood Park Neighborhoods and want to be invited to Nextdoor, just shoot me an email at [email protected] with your address and I will invite you. Or ask one of your neighbors to invite you. Many thanks to our faithful advertisers and our printer, Jay Levine at PIP Printing, who has printed the Parkster and given us a very generous discount since day one. Also, thanks to Mark Pennington who has done the excellent layout work and also, as the Azalea Park Treasurer, tracked the ad payments. And thanks to all of the volunteers who have delivered the Parkster door to door over the many years. Every aspect of publishing the Parkster is a volunteer job and our neighbors have given generously of their time to help get the paper out there every month. MOVING ON Besides the ability for everyone to post on the Nextdoor site, our neighborhood now has other amenities that we did not have when Mark and I moved here in 1981. The City's award winning Get It Done App has made it easy for everyone to report graffiti, illegal dumping, encampments and other issues from their phone or even on their computer at the City website at sandiego.gov and the City has become very efficient at responding to these reports. APNA MEETING CANCELLED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

July 2020

After 27 years as Editor of the Parkster NewsLetter, I find that I can no

longer fulfill this role. This is a difficult decision but for several years, I

have been wondering how much longer I could continue writing and

publishing the Parkster. Due to COVID-19, all but two of our Parkster

delivery volunteers have opted out of distributing newsletters to their

route so I have taken on the lion's share of that task as well. However,

the neighborhood now has Nextdoor where Azalea Park Neighborhood

and Hollywood Park Neighborhood residents (there are currently 822

members representing 561 households) can post information specific to

our neighborhood or they can choose to post to surrounding

neighborhoods to reach a bigger audience (potentially 18,133

members). We also have an Azalea Park Neighborhood Association

Facebook page where information can be posted.

Many thanks to our faithful advertisers and our printer, Jay Levine at PIP

Printing, who has printed the Parkster and given us a very generous

discount since day one. Also, thanks to Mark Pennington who has done

the excellent layout work and also, as the Azalea Park Treasurer,

tracked the ad payments. And thanks to all of the volunteers who have

delivered the Parkster door to door over the many years. Every aspect

of publishing the Parkster is a volunteer job and our neighbors have

given generously of their time to help get the paper out there every

month.

Because of the public health crisis, the U.S. Census Bureau has

extended the deadline for completing the census until October 31, and

the census has never been easier (or more important) to complete. You

can respond online, by phone or by mail. It only takes a few minutes, so

it's best to do so as soon as possible.

Census websites are now available in English and 12 other languages.

Online surveys may be completed on a computer, smartphone, laptop

or tablet.

To complete the census by phone, call 1 (844) 330-2020. Telephone

assistance is available from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. If there's a wait time,

you can ask the Census Bureau to call you back.

For those who prefer a paper questionnaire, surveys have been mailed

to households who have not previously responded. “U.S. Census

Bureau” or “U.S. Department of Commerce” is printed in the return

address. Simply complete the census and mail it back in the return

envelope provided.

It has never been more important for households to complete the 2020

Census. Many emergency preparedness and public health programs

rely heavily on census data for federal funding. San Diego County is

eligible for hundreds of millions of dollars in federal stimulus from the

Coronavirus Relief Fund (CRF) based on population figures provided by

the Census Bureau.

For more information, visit the U.S. Census Bureau website at

www.my2020census.gov.

2020 CENSUS

Long-time neighbor, Bill Hudson passed away in June. Kathy Hudson

sent this message the day he passed: “Thank you all for the prayers and

positive thoughts this last week. Bill passed this morning and is finally at

peace after a brief illness.” Bill had heart issues and a previous heart

surgery. He passed in the hospital four days after a valve replacement.

Kathy has assured us that this was not COVID related, although, like so

many, Bill resisted going to the doctor due to COVID and, sadly, Kathy

was not able to visit him in the hospital due to COVID. RIP, Bill. Our

hearts go out to Kathy who must carry on without you.

SAD NEWS

Hundreds of dogs and cats have been rescued and even spayed and

neutered over the years thanks to kind neighbors who truly love and

care about them. The Nextdoor site has made this even easier since

neighbors have the ability to immediately post photos of lost and found

dogs and have the whole community engaged in locating them or their

families. That's me in this 1996 photo with Montana, a Cocker Spaniel

that I found wandering on the street and put on a plane to Denver when I

learned that his owner had become very ill and had gone to live with his

family in Colorado. Montana had been left with a roommate, who

somehow lost him. Other neighbors helped with this effort by donating

grooming for Montana and a large carrier for transport. Quote from

Mahatma Gandhi: “The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way

its animals are treated.” We obviously have some wonderful neighbors

and for that I am thankful every day.

HAPPY PRIDE!

Photo:Pirate Ship and Kathy Cropped

The San Diego Pride Parade is typically held in

July but is cancelled this year due to COVID-19.

Here are a few photos of the Azalea Park

Neighborhood Association members having a

blast at previous Pride Parades. For seventeen

years, from 1993 to 2010, the neighbors got

together and created award winning floats for

the Pride Parade and some of us manned a

booth at the Pride Festival all weekend long to

promote Azalea Park homes. In 1993 our

banner read, “Canyon Homes Under $100,000”.

Of course, there is no need to promote our real

estate these days. The most recent sale of a

typical two bedroom home in Azalea Park sold

for $567,000 just four days after going on the

market and $17,000 over the asking price.
