With Gratitude, Mrs. Selber...finally taking that married name! :)

(aka Ms. Zeigler) SPE Principal

We are getting very close to the 2019-2020 school year! Each school year we center our school community around a common theme that we can apply to students’ social-emotional and academic learning, special school events, and staff learning and development. This year, the Sunrise Point community will become Determined Designers of SPE. We will focus on developing grit and determination - putting a growth mindset into action to reach our goals. We want students to experience the way design thinking principles apply to solving a problem and creating something new - whether it be for themselves, for their family relationships or friendships, or towards the vision they have for contributing to the world around them. Our young Patriots will be the designers of the future, and we can’t wait to kickoff the new school year to help them grow into the determined designers we know they can be!

If you did not order a school supply kit through PTO and School Kidz last spring, your shopping time is now! The supply lists are linked here for each respective grade level - 1st - 5th. Kindergarten will use community supplies, so families do not need to purchase classroom supplies - only backpacks, lunchboxes, and water bottles, as you wish.

Students in 1st-5th grades can bring supplies to Popsicle Pop-In the night before school, so they can get settled in to their new classroom!

Bonus Supply Request for ALL Students! We are asking that families send their students to school this year with their own set of headphones. Please ensure the headphones meet the criteria below. (We have found that Five Below is one retailer that has many options at the $5 price point, if that interests you.)

■ Kindergarten -2nd Grade Headphones: ● Corded (not wireless/Bluetooth/airpods)● Cover the ear (not earbuds)● With built-in microphone

■ 3rd-5th Grade Headphones:● Corded (not wireless/Bluetooth/airpods)● Earbuds or covering the ear, as you prefer● With built-in microphone The Patriot Press --- August 4, 2019

The Lost and Found collection tends to grow quickly. Help your child’s water bottles, lunch boxes, jackets, etc. stay out of the Lost and Found pile by putting their name on it. That way, when items are misplaced, they don’t have to be lost. We donate remaining items from the Lost and Found at the end of each semester.

Student “Independence Day”Monday, August 26th★ Arrival TimeIndependence and responsibility are skills that we want all of our students to possess, and we know families do, too. In keeping with that goal, we have targeted August 26th as "SPE Patriot Independence Day!" We ask that all students gain self-confidence by making their way into the school building and their classrooms independently.

Change in Birthday Treat Policy for 2019-2020

We are taking a food-free approach to birthday celebrations at The Point this year! We have found that our kids have plenty of sweet treats in their lives. Instead of families bringing birthday treats to share with the class, we have found other ways to celebrate each unique and individual student and their birthdays at school. Birthdays are always a great time for families to join their child for lunch at school.

School birthday celebration rituals at SPE: ★ Name and birthday on the broadcast announcements★ An in-person morning visit by the student Birthday Crew to the

birthday boy or girl. Some possible examples:○ Special chair in the classroom○ Extra recess time for the class○ Special class game○ Birthday hat, button, or sash

SPE Gets a New School CounselorBy Caleigh Richardson, (almost) 5th Grader

As some people know Mrs. Walrod is moving to the district office, and now there is a new counselor in town! Mr.Jackson will be taking Mrs. Wallrod’s place as counselor for SPE in 2019-2020.

Caleigh Richardson and Penelope Ciminieri, 4th graders in Mrs. Hagan’s 2018-2019 class, interviewed Mr. Jackson to get information on what he will be doing this year as a counselor. Mr. Jackson will do the lessons and bucket fillers. He graduated at the University of Northern Iowa to be a P.E. teacher. Previously Mr. Jackson was a counselor working at Forest View Elementary in Iowa. The reason Mr. Jackson wants to work here is he likes the people and the students. Caleigh and Penelope asked some students if they had any questions for Mr. Jackson. The most common questions were “What's your favorite color?” and “What's your favorite animal?” Penelope and Caleigh got the answers, his favorite color is red and his favorite animal is a cheetah.

SPE can't wait for you, Mr. Jackson! The Patriot Press --- August 4, 2019

Buzz-In System Active at SPEWhen school is in session at Sunrise Point, we make full use of the buzz-in system, which provides another layer of security as we work to foster a safe and positive learning environment.

Family members and visitors who arrive during the school day will use the buzz-in entry system. Adults will be asked to use the outside intercom and security camera to show their government-issued photo ID and share the purpose of their visit before being “buzzed in.” Once inside, adults will continue to sign in at the office and wear a visitor badge while in the school.

This means that anyone without a government-issued photo ID and a reasonable reason for entering, will not be allowed to enter the school building (even if the office staff knows the person well).

Take a sneak peek at how the system works by viewing this video. Thank you for helping us keep our dear SPE Patriots safe and sound at school!

Important Information Regarding Medication★ Please remember that an updated WRITTEN ORDER from your physician is required yearly if your

child will be taking prescription medication at school this year.★ If your child takes daily medication at school, please bring the written order and medication to

Popsicle Pop-In.★ If your child has “as needed” medications at school, (like inhalers, allergy, or pain medications), you

may bring them to the nurse’s office during Popsicle Pop-In.

Immunizations★ 2019-2020 Kindergarteners: We need a copy of your child’s

immunizations on file as well as a physical/well-visit signed by your child’s physician. Please turn those in to the school office ASAP. It is so helpful if we have those prior to the first day of school, as they are a requirement for your child to attend school.

★ When your child has immunization updates during the school year, please make sure to get a copy of the immunization record to the nurse. Your child’s records will be update accordingly.

Nurse Ayres will be at Sunrise Point full time this year! Starting August 9th, she will be back in the office. At that time or after, please contact the nurses office (913) 239-7513 with any questions. Thank you!
