Personal Accident Insurance A reminder for schools from the Department of Education and Training (DET) that they do not provide personal accident insurance or ambulance cover for students. Parents and guardians of students, who do not have student accident insurance/ ambulance cover, are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including the cost of ambulance attendance/ transport and any other transport costs. Student accident insurance/ ambulance covers are available from some commercial insurers. Failure A leading Victorian independent school is actively encouraging its students to fail, which is an absolutely genius idea. As reported in The Age (28th August 2017), Ivanhoe Girls Grammar school is holding Failure Week to teach students that making mistakes is a crucial part of learning. Teachers are sharing their personal stories of failure and students from Kindy to Year 12 are learning challenging activities such as abstract painting, juggling, reciting poetry and dancing. At the end of the week they’ll be displaying their new skills in front of each other with the emphasis being on stuff ups rather than perfection. I suspect for many students making errors, stuffing up and struggling to get things right will feel uncomfortable. But that’s the whole point. Kids need to fail more if they are to succeed Traditionally, schools and, in recent years, parents have excelled at celebrating student success. “Top marks”, “Dux of the school” and “perfect score!” are the types of aspirations that teachers and parents have for kids. It’s been widely reported that Australian kids are anxious, perfectionistic and risk averse. They just don't feel comfortable with failure. And who could blame them? We’ve hidden failure and disappointment from them for far too long. In recent years there’s been a common perception that failure damages people. Unfortunately, this is to the detriment of young people’s future success. Failure is an integral part of learning anything significant, challenging or worthwhile. Resilient learners realise that they don’t always get things right the first or even second time but with effort and practice they will master skills, find solutions and gain the knowledge they need to succeed. As reported in The Age, failure, if handled properly, provides kids with the feedback they need to help them achieve excellence. Yes, kids need positive feedback too… but only when it’s deserved. When we tell a child everything is wonderful when, in fact, his work is mediocre at best, we give him a false sense of achievement.

Student Enrolments 2018 If you are planning to enrol your children at another school for 2018 for Years Kindy to Year 6, kindly advise the front office or their class teacher to assist with future planning. This does not affect the student while they continue at Pearsall Primary, it is only for our Administration Team to determine our student numbers for the following year. Administration Information ~ Mrs Froud Cyber Safety (“Don’t Be Mean Behind The Screen”) - Last Tuesday night, WA Child Safety Services ran a Cyber Safety parent workshop for parents and families of Pearsall PS. Mrs Kayelene Kerr, Child Safety Advocate and Trainer, delivered a powerful presentation on helping parents understand the apps, games and social medical platforms that children are using from an early age. Parent tips for encouraging children to be Cyber Smart were given with a focus on teaching children strategies of what to do if they encounter inappropriate content or cyberbullying. The key message from the evening was it is never too early to talk about cybersafety. Many thanks to Pearsall PS P&C for fully funding the evening. Look our for further parent information sessions next year. Afternoon Teas - Afternoon teas were organised for both our EALD and children with special needs’ parents. These were well received and provided opportunities for pastoral care in a collective sense for these parents. Chaplain - We will be aiming to have the Chaplain Lisa Ingham work three days a week from Term 2 in 2018. This will be partly funded by the Lapathon in Term 1.

School Board

Community events are so important in building a sense of belonging for the whole family. The P&C, staff and students are busy preparing a community event to remember. On 1 December, from 5.00pm - 9.00pm, the school fete will not only reach our school community but bring in the wider community. There are 3 ways to support: help with your child's class stall; make sure you come on the night; and bring family and friends with you. Finally, please come and say hi to the Board members running the Fairy Floss Stall.

Remembrance Day Pearsall Primary School commemorated Remembrance Day on Friday 10th November. The year 6 students spoke about what Remembrance Day is and the poppy, which was the first plant to grow back on the battlefield. The students delivered the ode and everyone stopped for one minute of silence. The entire student body behaved perfectly (it was like being at a real dawn service). The speakers were clear and respectful. Lest We Forget Madi – Year 6

Sleep Primary school age children will typically need about 10 to 11 hours of sleep each night. Some children fall asleep very quickly; others sleep lightly at first, moving and fidgeting before settling into a deep sleep. While every child is different and the way they sleep will be different as well, in most children the first half of the night is made up of deep sleep. This deep sleep is essential for early childhood

development http://raisingchildren.net.au/articles/sleep_faqs.html/context/757 Attendance—Every Day Counts! Attending school every day is essential for students of all ages to maximise their learning potential and growth. Missing school can have a major impact on a child’s future—a student missing one day a fortnight will miss four full weeks by the end of the year. By Year 10 they’ll have missed more than a year of school. There is no safe number of days for missing school—each day a student misses puts them behind and can affect their educational outcomes. Remember, every day counts. If your child must miss school, speak with your classroom teacher as early as possible. Booklists Booklists were recently distributed. The delivery service is FREE for orders placed by the 24th November 2017. After this date a delivery charge of up to $8 will be charged. Copies of the 2018 booklist are available on our school website www.pearsallps.wa.edu.au
