Bob Kaelin writes:

The photo on the cover of the August issue was taken at Jake Tyler’s dock in Green-port. It had to be around 1949-50 and was a shipload of seed potatoes coming in from Prince Edward Island in Canada. My father was a vice president of the Long Island Produce and Fertilizer Co. (LIPCO) at the time and we dealt in seed potatoes which ordinarily came here by rail freight from Maine. For some reason or another, he made a couple of trips to Prince Edward Island around ’48 or ’49 and he may have contracted for this shipment. I remember that Jack Carey, an old well-known Southold farmer, went with him. There were at least two such boatloads like this but I can’t recall if it was in the same year or over a period of two years. I do remember having been on the decks of both ships; one of them had steam-powered winches and the other had winches powered by two Acadia (brand name) single-cylinder gas engines that had flywheels about 5 feet in diameter. The winches would hall sacks of seed potato on pallets up out of the hold, wing them over the side and then lower them down onto the flatbed bodies of trucks waiting on the pier below. I recall future shipments of seed potato continued by rail.

$Another bit of LIPCO history is shown in the same issue. That photo was taken on Pulaski Street in Riverhead near the intersection of Claus Avenue. That long, low building housed the farm machinery and truck sales and service (note the plate glass showroom windows). 1939 was the year that International Harvester brought out a new line of farm tractors with modern styling (by Raymond Loewy, no less!) to replace the old F-12 thru F-30 series —so it’s a good chance that this meeting of the salesmen was tied to that event. The building (minus the big windows) is still there and is now the Long Ireland Beer Company. I have seen this picture before. Note the odd “double exposure” in the window at the left; it reflects part of a pickup truck as well as the house across the street, but through the same glass you can see the rear of a Niagra (brand name) insecticide duster (with the long flexible metal hoses) that was inside the building. \

Holmes and the Long Island Cave Mystery.
