Pemberton Heights Neighborhood Association Newsletter - July 2010 1 OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF PEMBERTON HEIGHTS NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION J ULY 2010, VOL IV, I SSUE VII The Pemberton Journal Moving from New York City to Yorktown (“the wilds of Texas”) in 1915 to bring ready- to-wear clothing to the Southwest, Benjamin and Augusta Goodfriend saw their store become the buying center of the DeWitt County area. By 1931, their focus was on educating their three sons and expanding the merchandising business. As a result, the Goodfriends moved to Austin and opened their first store at 716 Congress Avenue...named Goodfriends. Two years later, while living on Palma Plaza, the Goodfriends purchased the lot at 2418 Harris Boulevard. Page Brothers was hired to design a beautiful Mediterranean style home. Noted Swiss woodcarver Peter Mansbendel, who had come to the United States and eventually settled in Austin, was commissioned to carve an intricate mantel around the fireplace in the living room. By this time, Mansbendel was the most renowned woodcarver of the Southwest. In the beginning, Goodfriends was a family operated store with Benjamin and Augusta on duty full time and the three boys sweeping the floors or delivering packages after school. Their business thrived, and in 1946 they moved to a two story building at Ninth and Congress. That store was enlarged and modernized in 1951 to accommodate their continued growth. The Goodfriend boys grew up with Austin, graduated from the University ofTexas, served in World War II and came back home to Austin. Nat, who also studied at the New York University School of Retailing, became executive vice president of the family operation while his father served as president and chairman of the board. In 1964, Goodfriends celebrated a half century of merchandising in Texas with 33 of those years on Congress Avenue in Austin. The Goodfriend family lived in this beautiful home for 46 years. Don and Ann Cooper owned the home for 14 years before current owners Bob and Mary Cocke bought it in 1993. Mary is an oil and gas investor, and Bob is a scientist. Bob and Mary worked with Suzanne Deaderick to get the house designated a City of Austin historic landmark in 2009. The History of the Goodfriend House 2418 Harris Boulevard Submitted by Suzanne Deaderick Neighborhood Garden Club Formed New Pemberton resident, Forrest McCoy, recently formed a free online gardening club open to anyone in the neighborhood. The club may be accessed on the internet by going to http://groups.yahoo.com/ and searching for “pembertongardenclub.” “I asked some of my neighbors and friends about any gardening clubs we have, and no one seemed to know of any…[so] I recently started up a garden group,” said McCoy. McCoy thinks its “a great way to keep in touch and network with our neighbors in Pemberton Heights, and helps keep our neighborhood not only socially friendly, but looking exteriorly great as well!” Many people in Pemberton have landscaping contractors and maintenance companies tending to their beds and lawns. McCoy envisions his recently formed garden club group as a way to facilitate the offering and sharing of clippings, seedlings, extra plants, and mulch. The Pemberton Garden Club group is also a good forum for neighbors to ask questions and share information about plants, zones, watering, or any other gardening questions. Members of the group are free to ask questions, respond, post photos of their plants, gardens and flowerbeds, and give any other kind of advice related to gardening. There are several ways to “add some green to your home (flowerbeds, patio planting, container planting, indoor planting, and adding trees and shrubs),” says McCoy. The Pemberton Garden Club online group welcomes beginners to advance gardeners to help each other out and network those "green thumbs.” Please consider joining Pemberton's brand new garden club.

FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DROWNING

For more information, check out our website at

www.colinshope.org

Drowning is the leadingcause of unintentional

injury-related deathin children ages 1-4

Drowning is the 2nd leading cause of unintentional injury-related death ages 1-14.

DROWNING WILL AFFECT YOUOR SOMEONE YOU KNOW

Most children are out of sight or missing for less than 5 minutes and usually in the presence of 1 or both parents.

NO ONE is “drown proof” – no matter their level of swimming ability.

Falls, entrapments, and injuries lead to drowning regardless of swimming level.

A majority of people overestimate their own and their child’s ability to swim, especially in a panic event.

5min

Drowning occurs in as little as 2 minutes.

Most children die who are submerged for as little as 6-10 minutes.

Irreversible brain damage occurs in as little as 4 minutes.

2min 4min 6min

Children who drown do not scream, splash, or struggle. They silently slip beneath the water, even with adults & lifeguards present.

DROWNING IS QUICK AND SILENT

DROWNING CAN STILL OCCUREVEN IF YOU KNOW HOW TO SWIM
