I am honored to serve as your Chapter President for this year and look forward to our upcoming speakers and community service events. Thank you to Brandi Stuart, our 2016-2017 Chapter President, for her leadership last year and continued support of the AGA Jackson Chapter this year as our Communications chair. During the AGA National Professional Development Training (PDT) in Boston, Massachusetts in July, Brandi Stuart accepted the Jackson Chapter’s Platinum Chapter Award on our behalf. Thanks to Brandi’s leadership, the dedication of your Chapter Executive Committee, your membership and participation in monthly chapter meetings, as well as volunteering your time for our community service events, our chapter was able to reach our goal and obtain this award. The Platinum status is the highest level of the AGA Chapter Recognition Program. With your continued membership and participation, we can reach our goal of Platinum status once again and have our chapter recognized at the National PDT annual event. Brandi Stuart was also instrumental in the Jackson Chapter awarding a $750 undergraduate and $750 graduate level scholarship for the Fall 2017 semester. She developed a scholarship application, distributed the applications to colleges and universities throughout the state, and formed a scholarship committee to review the applications received. Congratulations to Quintilla Bishop, graduate scholarship recipient at Delta State University, and Bailey Matthews, undergraduate scholarship recipient at Delta State University. Thank you Brandi Stuart for your leadership in this process, and I look forward to our chapter continuing to award scholarships to current accounting students. Brandi Zuber, the Education chair for this program year, has already started reaching out to various elected government officials, state legislators, executive directors of state agencies, and private industry leaders to be speakers during our regular monthly meetings. As stated in our chapter’s education plan, there will be at least 20 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credit hours offered this year including our full day annual spring conference to be held in May 2018. If you have suggestions for speakers that would be interested in speaking to our chapter, feel free to contact Brandi Zuber or myself. Your Chapter Executive Committee (CEC) and myself are looking forward to serving the AGA Jackson Chapter this year and are always open to any suggestions you may have to make our chapter even better. Welcome to the AGA Jackson Chapter’s 2017-2018 program year! I

This Month’s Speaker

Terry C. Burton President Pro Tempore Mississippi State Senate

Since being elected to represent the 31st District, in 1992, as a Senator of the State of Mississippi,

Senator Terry C. Burton has been an active member and affirmed leader in the MS State Legislature.

He has been the chair for many committees in his tenure, including:

• Chairman of Senate Energy Committee

• Chairman of Public Health Subcommittee on Public Health issues

• Chairman of Appropriations Subcommittee on Medicaid

• Chairman of Investigate State Offices Committee

• Chairman of Universities and Colleges Committee

• Chairman of Elections Committee

• Chairman of Health Care Information Technology Task Force, President George W. Bush W.H.

Senator Burton is currently Chairman of the Senate Rules Committee and the Appropriations

Subcommittee on Government Operations. Senator Burton is also a member on the following

committees: Accountability, Efficiency, and Transparency; Appropriations; Congressional

Redistricting; Education; Joint Legislative Budget Committee; Legislative Reappointment; and

Municipalities Committee.

Senator Burton is a staunch advocate for issues concerning the present and continued well-being of

the state’s more seasoned citizens, as he has authored key pieces of legislation on the matter.

Passing legislation such as:

• Bill creating MS Leadership Council on Aging

• Bill requiring dual reporting of suspected elder abuse, neglect or exploitation

• Bill mandating needed changes to Vulnerable Adults Act

• Bill establishing enhanced criminal penalties for felonies against elderly

Senator Burton does not simply hold the title of public service, he lives to serve. He has done

countless hours of community service, been a dedicated member of various professional

organizations, and has received a number of highly competitive honors and rewards, some of which

include:

• Mississippi Business Journal Top 40 Under 40 (1996)

• Jayne Kennedy Distinguished Service Award, Division of Ageing and Adult Services (2002)

• Legislator of the Year, Mississippi Public Transportation Association (2011)

Senator Terry C. Burton has earned the respect of his constituents, colleagues, and acquaintances

due to his genuine spirit and dedicated work ethic. The culmination of his time in the MS State

Senate came to full fruition, as he was elected to serve and lead as Senate Pro Tempore in 2016. A

native of Philadelphia, MS, Senator Burton is married to the former Darleen Allday. They have two

children, four grandchildren and one great-grand child.

Community Services Projects 2017-2018

October/November Community Stewpot The Jackson Chapter collects donations from attendees at regular chapter meetings during the months of October and November.

December 2017 Santa Day - MSH Santa Day at Mississippi State Hospital will be in

December. We welcome volunteers for Santa and elves to hand out gift bags and bring Christmas cheer!

January 13, 2018 MS Blues Marathon The annual MS Blues Marathon is scheduled for Saturday, January 13, 2018. AGA Jackson Chapter volunteers work a water station each year.

April 2018 Susan G. Komen Central MS Steel Magnolias Race for the Cure –AGA Jackson Chapter volunteers to help with registration.

May 2018 Blair E. Batson Hospital Silent auction fundraiser is held at the Spring Conference each year and a portion of the proceeds are matched by AGA National.

April/May 2018 The Jackson Zoo AGA Volunteer Day at the Jackson Zoo.

Call to Order

The AGA Jackson Chapter meeting was called to order at 12:00 at the Capitol Club by Brandi Stuart, AGA President. Minutes

Brandi asked if there were any corrections or additions to the minutes. There were no corrections. Brenda Whitcomb moved to approve the minutes. Nita Caylor seconded. The motion was passed. Announcements

Brandi welcomed all members and visitors Brandi reminded everyone that is was our last meeting. She thank all the CEC board members for their hard work and dedication to the chapter. She especially thanked Kim for her dedication as Community Service Chair. Kim will be moving on and serving as President-Elect next year. Holly Smith told everyone to make sure that they signed the CPE sign in sheet for April, May and June. Brandi was presented with a plaque for her service as Chapter President for 2016-2017. The plaque was presented by Nita Caylor. Speakers

Nita Caylor introduced the speakers for the meeting. Dr. David Dzielak, Executive Director for MS Division of Medicaid, shared information concerning Medicaid and Shanell Watson, Woodward Hines Education Foundation, presented information concerning “State of Accounting: Filling the Future Pipeline”. Minutes of AGA Chapter Executive Committee Meeting Tuesday, April 18, 2017 Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 11:32 a.m. by Brandi Stuart, AGA President, at the Woolfolk

Building, 11th Floor Conference Room.

Attendees Officers present were Brandi Stuart, Holly Savorgnan, Samuel Cole, Yolanda Campbell, Kim

McCrory, Donna Sebren, Gia Allen, CJ King, Tracey Gwin, and Nita Caylor. Holly Smith phoned in.

CEC REPORTS

Secretary Report Brandi asked the CEC if there were any corrections to the last CEC minutes. There were no

corrections. CJ moved to approve the minutes. Nita seconded. The motion passed.

President Report Brandi notified the group that all the speaker spots for the Spring Conference are filled.

Membership Report Donna reported that there are eight new members for April. Chequetta Harper, Loretta

Hollingbird, Felisha Jacobs, Angela Johnson, Dorothy McGee, Sonia Smith, Edward Williams, and Visa

Williams are the newest members. Donna mentioned that we have 23 new members compared to the 22 we

had this time last year.

Treasurer Report Nita distributed the financial report to the CEC for March. There was one correction,

change ETF to EFT. Gia moved to approve the financial report. Tracey seconded. The motion passed.

Community Services Report Kim informed everyone that we have 11 volunteers for the Jackson Zoo event

on May 21 from 2:00-4:00 pm.

CGFM Report The CGFM books are currently still checked out by one member.

By-Laws No report.

Newsletter/Website Report The newsletter will go out a week before the next meeting on May 17. All

information is needed by Monday, May 8.

Education Report Holly Smith notified the group that Joe Goff will present at the May meeting and she is

working on a speaker for the June meeting. The June meeting will be two hours. She gave a list of the agenda

topics for the April 28 Spring Conference at MC which includes: Procurement/Fraud, Ethics, Internal

Controls, and Hot Topics.

Announcements/ Other Business

The next CEC meeting is May 25, 2017. The next chapter meeting is May 17.

Minutes of AGA Chapter Executive Committee Meeting Thursday, May 25, 2017

Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 11:33 a.m. by Brandi Stuart, AGA President, at the Woolfolk

Building, 11th Floor Conference Room.

Attendees Officers present were Brandi Stuart, Samuel Cole, Yolanda Campbell, Donna Sebren, Gia Allen, Nita

Caylor, Holly Smith (conferenced in by phone), Brandi Zuber and Avis Phillips.

CEC REPORTS

Secretary Report Holly was out, so it was noted that we would approve the 4/28/17 minutes at the next CEC

meeting.

President Report Brandi welcomed the new CEC board members, Avis Phillips and Brandi Zuber. Avis will serve

as Chairperson for Community Service and Brandi will be the Education Chairperson.

Brandi asked everyone to update personal information on the contact sheet that would be sent to Yolanda

Campbell, incoming President for 2017-2018.

The annual spring conference was a success! We raised a total of $1,100.00 (includes match from National). Kim

will do a big check for us to present to Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital.

Nita pulled together the numbers from the conference:

Revenue- $5,980 Expenses-

• $450.00 room rental

• $406.00 gifts

• $1,438.00 catering

Net income (roughly) - $3,686.00 The scholarship deadline is May 31, 2017.

Brandi and Yolanda attended the SLM in Kansas City. One of the main topics discussed was rebranding the name

of AGA.

The National PDT will be held in Boston, MA this year. Brandi, Yolanda and Billy will be attending. The dates are

July 9-14.

The CRP report is due May 31. We will be recognized as Platinum Chapter again this year.

The PDT Charity has asked each chapter to donate to the silent auction. We discussed sending something

Mississippi related.

Minutes of AGA Chapter Executive Committee Meeting-continued Thursday, May 25, 2017

Membership Report Donna reported that there are five new members for April and May. The new members are:

• Martha Dulin, MS Office of Attorney General

• Yvette Jones, MS Development Authority

• Jada Kirk, MS Division of Medicaid

• Sabrina Silas, MS Division of Medicaid

• Quintina Young, MS Development Authority

Treasurer Report Nita distributed the financial report to the CEC as of April 30, 2017. There were no corrections.

Yolanda motioned to approve the financial report and CJ seconded. The motion was passed.

Community Services Report Yolanda and Kim attended the Zoo Dinosaur event that was held on May 21. The Zoo

will also be having an event called “Dream Night” on June 14, 2017. It is for special needs kids.

CGFM Report We have one member who has checked out the study guides for the CGFM exam. We are also

looking into seeing if the CGFM will be qualified as a benchmark through MS State Personal Board.

By-Laws No report

Newsletter/Website Report The newsletter will go out on June 7. All information needs to be to Tracey by Monday,

June 5.

Education Report The meeting in June will be 2 hours. Shanell Watson with the Woodward Hines Education

Foundation would be one of the speakers. We were also checking to see if Dr. David Dzielak, the Executive

Director for the Division Medicaid could be the 2nd speaker.

Announcements/ Other Business It was decided that we did not need to have another CEC meeting in June. The

next meeting would be sometime in August. The next chapter meeting would be in September.
