Casuals Unfortunately, recently at PHPS and at many local schools classes have had to be split because there is a shortage of casual teachers at present. There are many reasons for this situation but I wanted to ensure that the community is aware that every time a teacher calls in sick we attempt to find a replacement. Schools are provided with funding specifically for this purpose, however, recently we have needed to split classes as a casual teacher cannot be booked. This is not ideal and I want to reassure the community that we do always attempt to find a replacement. Last Friday I attended a conference where the Secretary for the DoE – Mr Mark Scott acknowledged this very issue that is affecting many schools. I thank you for your understanding with this matter.

Volunteers

Volunteers at any school are an integral cog in the wheel to ensure that the school provideS the students with wonderful opportunities. At PHPS we have so many wonderful volunteers that assist the school and school community in so many ways. The school and P&C are always looking for assistance and if you feel you are in a position to help please have a chat with a member of the school staff or a P&C executive.

Please understand that your role is vital to the school and students. With this in mind we ask you to respect the privacy of the students and not discuss any matter that you witness at school in your role as a volunteer relating to any staff member or student that is not your own. This behavior is not acceptable and can also place you in a difficult situation. It must be noted that all NSW Department of Education employees, contractors and volunteers working with the department are expected to be aware of this Code and act in line with the conduct described in it. Whilst contractors, consultants, volunteers and committee members are not subject to disciplinary action, conduct that would be assessed as being a serious breach of the Code of Conduct may result in their contract or volunteer activity being terminated.

lucky to have such an amazing school, our teachers are some of the most compassionate people I’ve ever worked with and the P & C work very hard with the school to ensure the best opportunity for our students. Thank you to Mrs Parras for organising a wonderful morning where the Senior Band played, the Ramsay choir performed and KP showed off their dance moves. Thank you also to the Kindergarten parents for providing such a spread for morning tea, I think I ate one too many slices. Classroom Visits I had the pleasure of spending some time in 5G this week when they were experimenting with their coding of the microbots. It is truly impressive to see how adaptive and knowledgeable these students are. In groups they decided on one of the microbot applications, read and inputed the required code to program the microbot then demonstrated what they had created. One group created a step counter which led to a great discussion about the placement of the microbot on your body to ensure the accuracy of the count and whether you would have to double the count to find the total number of steps. Yuto challenged me to a number speed test where he had programmed his microbot to display the numbers 1-6 rapidly and I had to tally the numbers as I saw them. My best was 23/30, looks like I’ve got some work to do! Another group programmed their microbot to have the rolling script “Mrs Wasson is the best!” – Thanks! Wonderful work 5G!

Yuto competing with my 23/30 – I think he scored 25/30. You win this time Yuto! Mrs Wasson is the best!

I spent some time in 1E(xcellent) this morning while they were partaking in literacy groups. Such a beautiful, engaged class. DJ and Alexia were writing about why they believe cats are better than dogs, with some wonderful reasons like dogs are too loud when they bark and cats eat fish so they must be better. Another group were on the iPads focusing on spelling and phonics activities, Mrs Erdmanis was reading with a very engaged group of readers and I had the opportunity to read with Georgia and Stuart (Happy birthday!) a book about a boy who accidentally chose a cow as a pet dog – hilarious! Thank you for having me 1E!

Oliver Phommavanh Visit On Monday 3 June, Oliver Phommavanh visited all Stage 3 students. This term, all Year 5 and 6 classes are reading and studying his book Con-Nerd, a character inspired by Oliver himself. It was an engaging, humorous visit that was enjoyed by all. “I thought that the author visit was awesome. Oliver was very funny and got everyone to have some fun. He gave us lots of handy tips for when we don’t know what to write. That was great for me because I want to be an author when I’m older. Overall, it was a motivating, funny talk and from what I’ve read of the books, they are too.” Emma, 5A “Today we had the best author visit ever…Oliver Phonnavanh. Yep, the one and only Oliver Phommavanh came to our school and the whole of Stage 3 got to meet him. We were so lucky. When we arrived he introduced himself. He asked a couple of students to tell him about their most embarrassing moments like: looking into the toilet bowl right after you’ve done your job and taking pictures, then when people arrive going around and showing them pictures, or reading quietly in bed then your mum just randomly walks in and starts taking pictures of you. He also told a lot of jokes and

gave us some really good story writing tips. My favourite tip was to always add more trouble so it makes your story super embarrassing. He also told us about all his books like Con-Nerd and Super Con-Nerd and then told us where he got all his inspiration from. Overall, everyone loved it and it was by far the best author visit.” Will, 5F Ms Lucy Ashelford 5A Class Teacher INDIGENOUS CULTURAL WORKSHOPS

ZONE CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL

Congratulations to all Cross Country competitors at a cool and windy Fagan Park last Wednesday. Our school team finished in 4th place overall. A great result! Special mention to Manning J (3rd place), Joel N (3rd place), Kate H (5th place), Molly A (6th place) and Tereza S (6 place). They all progress to the Sydney North carnival. Good luck! Mr Mark Bryant Cross Country Coordinator PSSA SCOREBOARD Last Friday we played Thornleigh West PS. Congratulations on your selection in the Beecroft Zone squad to go to the Sydney North Rugby Union trials. And finally, congratulations to Alex P and Finlay A on becoming NSW PSSA Football Champions, as their Sydney North team defeated CIS in the State Final. Well done! Mr Mark Bryant PSSA Coordinator LEARNING TO LEAD PROGRAM On Tuesday 28 May, twelve Stage 3 students were selected to represent our school in the high school student led “Learning to Lead sports program” at Pennant Hills High School. The students participated in a range of sport specific activities throughout the day, learning skills to lead, which they will put into practice for the K-2 Sports Day. “Pennant Hills Public School was one of the lucky primary schools that got to go to the learning to lead workshop at Pennant Hills High School. We got to learn important leadership skills and new sports. Some of the sports we encountered were AFL, soccer, cricket, netball, basketball and initiative games. It was an enjoyable day, and we now can't wait to help out with the K-2 sports day.” - By Samantha 5A “The Learning to Lead program was so much fun!! We did many enjoyable activities including soccer, netball, cricket, AFL and many more. We didn't just enjoy the activities though, we learnt many ways to set up drills and be a true sports leader. None of this would have been possible without Mrs Ford and Miss

P&C PRESIDENT The Green Team Let’s look at the second of the 3 R’s; REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE. Here are some tips to help you REUSE the waste created in your household; Food Containers (eg, from ice cream, margarine/butter spreads)

- Wash and use them to store all sorts of things Plastic Zip Lock Bags

- Wash and reuse the zip lock bags that food products come in. Turn them inside out to fully dry. Jars

- Great for shaking up salad dressings and bottling home-made preserves. You can research online how to sterilise and vacuum seal your produce.

Old Clothes/Bed Linen/Towels - Keep for rags, cut up and use as dusters or use old towels for pets or wiping the floor. Pure fibres like wool and cotton can be used as weed blankets on garden beds as they will break down over time.

Plastic Bags - Reuse for shopping or use as bin liners

Envelopes - Use for shopping lists / making notes

Old Toothbrushes - Great for cleaning in tricky corners, small tight spaces, for washing up or any cleaning job.

CD’S - Use scratched CD’s as coasters or make hanging bird deterrents to protect your edible plants and fruiting trees

Containers Without Lids (or lids without a container) - Use them to store bottles of oil in your pantry to keep the shelves clean
