And you — who do you say that I am?

When Jesus had heard the verdicts of the crowd, he asked the all-important question: And you — who do you say that I am? At that question many seemed to be preoccupied by not knowing what to say in response to the Lord’s question, but Simon Peter saved them “by the bell” by making his great discovery and his great confession. “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Such confession was melody to Jesus’ ears for he knew that his work was safe because at least someone understood.

It is interesting to note that each of the three gospels has its own version of the saying of Peter: Matthew has: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Mark is briefest of all: “You are the Christ.”(8:29) Luke is clearest of all: “You are the Christ of God.”(9:20) Jesus knew that there was at least someone who had recognized him as the Messiah [Hebrew], the Christ [Greek[, that is, the Anointed One of God, the son of the living God, the one who is God’s king over all humanity.

Within this passage, there is a great truth; this passage teaches us that our discovery of Jesus Christ must be a personal discovery. When Pilate asked Jesus if he was the King of the Jews, his answer was: “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me? (John 18:33)

Our knowledge of Jesus never should be second hand. Our verdict of Jesus must come from having a personal relationship with him, which only happens as long as we hear his word (Sacred Scripture). Jesus Christ demands a personal verdict. He did not ask only Peter, he asked every one of us: “You — who do you say that I am?

PS: If we confess: “Jesus is Lord,” then our lives should reflect our bold stance. Thus, what can we do to reveal our faith to others today? Father Sebastian Valencia Obando

Prayer for Catechists

Lord God, Source of Wisdom and Knowledge, in Your goodness bless our brothers and sisters who have offered themselves as catechists for your Church. Strengthen them with Your gifts that they may teach by word and example the truth which comes from You. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen

OFFERINGS As a Parish Community, our gifts back to the Lord for the month of August 2018 amounted to:

Cash $ 13,809.00 Checks/Envelopes 35,909.50 Electronic Transfer 8,284.00 Credit Cards 540.00 Monthly Total $ 58,542.50

Assessment $ 1,035.00 STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny him- self, take up his cross, and follow me.” (Mark 8:34) When we truly believe that all we have is a gift from God, then we must be willing to give up some things so that we can share our blessings as God intended. Living a stewardship lifestyle

means not only being responsible for our own life, but the lives of others as well.
