THE PERFECT CANADIAN PICNIC Activity time! Read this first… Everyone has a different idea of what the perfect Canadian picnic would look like. What would you bring? Who would you go with? If you could travel to any location in Canada to enjoy a picnic, where would it be? You may not realize it, but geography often factors into our decisions about how we pass our time and the locations we choose to visit. There are many elements that might affect your decision on where the perfect picnic location would be. Do you feel more connected to a particular biome, such as the grasslands, the tundra, or the boreal forest? What geographical features catch your eye and make you want to explore further or relax and be at one with nature? ...then follow these instructions Based on geographical features, weather and travel, you are going to research the perfect place to have a picnic. Consider the following: Biomes in Canada Geographical features Weather and climate Travel and transportation Proximity to water Proximity to urban areas or community walkways Topography Wildlife Location amenities (e.g., campsites, washrooms, trails) Stop and think: What kind of geographical features do you enjoy? Do you like mountains, rivers, lakes, oceans, forests, valleys, plains or tundra? What is your favourite season? Do you like the heat or the cold? Do you like it when it rains or when it’s sunny? How will you get there? Can you drive there or do you have to hike or canoe to get there? Once you have found your perfect location, fill out the Perfect Canadian Picnic worksheet and include a map of your chosen picnic location. When you are adding your map, make sure to include four key map elements: a title, a legend, scale, and a north arrow. � If your location is accessible to you, put your plan into action and enjoy a picnic. � Plan a picnic location for each season. � Research different cultural traditions relating to picnics and take these
