• IMDS Steering Committee

• IMDS Participants

– Big companies with large product catalogs

– Any participant who wants to publish

• Any participant in IMDS may use this data IF the data accurately represents the material in question

IMDS Steering Committee Data

Is the Committee Material the Right Choice?

In this case, yes. Don’t create a material. Use the Committee MDS.

Is the Committee Material the Right Choice?

In this case, no. - The Committee MDS is not a match.

Published Data Sources

• IMDS Steering Committee

• IMDS Participants

– Big companies with large product catalogs

– Any participant who wants to publish

Big Publishers - DuPont

• Materials

– Need to contact DuPont to request which MDS to use

• Cannot search for product codes or names in IMDS

• Sometimes the same MDS may represent multiple materials

Big Publishers – 3M

• Materials

• Semi-components

Can search

by product

code or

trade name

Try both types of

searches. Use *

and searching for

part of the name for

the best results.

Big Publishers - ExxonMobil Chemical America

• Materials

Can search

by product

code or

trade name

in trade

name field

Remember, it never hurts to ask the supplier

if the published data you found is current and

the appropriate one for the material.

• IMDS Participants

– Big companies with large product catalogs

– Any participant who wants to publish

Published Data Sources – Other Participants

• Any participant can publish data

– Can publish data about anything including things they do not actually make

– Just because it’s published doesn’t mean you can use it

Bonus tip:

It’s common to see

only 1 Magni

material when there

should be 2 or more.

Peril #1 – Is it data you are allowed to use?

• Is the data published by your supplier?

• Did they tell you to use it in lieu of sent data?

If the published

data is NOT from

your supplier, do

not use it!

Peril #2 – Is it from the actual manufacturer?

Both

published

MDSs

Same

product

Hoosier does not

make Santoprene.

Don’t use their data!

Peril #3 – Is the data current?

The data is almost 10 years old. Lots of substances have been regulated in those years.

What substances are represented by the wildcards? Have any of them become declarable/prohibited?

Sabic no longer publishes their data. They do direct submissions.

IMDS will not give you any warnings

about this published data and it

looks okay; but…

If you search for this MDS, you will not find it.

Remember: data currency is your

responsibility. There are no update

notifications for published data.

In Summary

• Only use published data when

1. It is published by the IMDS Steering Committee AND it accurately represents the material you are using; OR

2. It is from your actual supplier who is the actual manufacturer AND it is current
