FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Today’s celebration of the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord ends the Christmas season and begins the first part of Ordinary Time on the Church’s liturgical calendar. It’s good for us to view Baptism as a beginning, and not an end. Jesus’ Baptism confirmed who He is as the only begotten Son of the Father, and began His mission to preach repentance and forgiveness of sins. Our own Baptism is a beginning. We are given the faith as a free gift in this first sacrament of initiation. Then, we must continue to cultivate that precious gift by praying and learning about our faith.

The Catechism Corner this week points out in CCC paragraph 1231 that there is a need for instruction after Baptism. This instruction is critical for us to be prepared to receive our other sacraments, and to live out our Catholic faith in the world. Parents begin this instruction at home through prayer, good example and talking with their children about the faith and our beliefs. Then, PSR (formerly CCD) or a Catholic school education reinforces a child’s religious education.

The church has recently published a revised Ritual for Baptism to be used beginning February 2, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, and which will then be required for use beginning at the Easter Vigil this year. I don’t expect there to be many noticeable changes in the ritual. It’s mostly to bring the language in harmony with what we hear at Mass in the revised Roman Missal. Without having seen it yet, something that could be a noticeable change is the new appendix for baptism of children within Mass.

Let’s pray in gratitude for the gift of our Baptism, and for our parents, grandparents, and godparents for speaking up for us, if we received this as infants. Let’s also give thanks for those priests and deacons who have imparted this great sacrament to us. Most of all let’s allow that baptismal grace to flourish in our lives!

In Christ Jesus,Fr. Hartge

K OF C will be sponsoring a March for Life Fundraiser Pancake Breakfast at St. Patrick’s Social Hall on January 12 at 8:00 a.m. until Noon.

7TH AND 8TH GRADE PSR CLASS for January 12 has been cancelled. Youth Group for January 19 will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the PCC. We will be playing sports and afterwards there will be a Holy Hour for the March for Life.

CATECHISM CORNER 977: Our Lord tied the forgiveness of sins to faith and Baptism: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved.“ Baptism is the first and chief sacrament of forgiveness of sins because it unites us with Christ, who died for our sins and rose for our justification, so that “we too might walk in newness of life.” 1213: Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua), and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: “Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.”1223: All the Old Covenant prefigurations find their fulfillment in Christ Jesus. He begins his public life after having himself baptized by St. John the Baptist in the Jordan. After his resurrection Christ gives this mission to his apostles: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”1231: Where infant Baptism has become the form in which this sacrament is usually celebrated, it has become a single act encapsulating the preparatory stages of Christian initiation in a very abridged way. By its very nature infant Baptism requires a post-baptismal catechumenate. Not only is there a need for instruction after Baptism, but also for the necessary flowering of baptismal grace in personal growth. The catechism has its proper place here.
