U Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849) was an American writer, poet, editor, and literary critic. Poe is best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly tales of mystery and the macabre. He is considered to be a central figure of American Romanticism, as well as a progenitor of short stories, detective fiction, and science fiction. During the course of his short life, he authored more than 40 short stories and 50 poems.
