Te City o Redwood City’s Public Works Departmenthas also developed a new water conservation outreachplan with tools to help residents and commercial usersconserve by taking advantage o rebates, recycled waterprograms, and more. Tese programs will save waterindoors and outdoors, and increase overall awareness owater as a precious and limited local resource.

Among the new and existing water conservation toolsavailable to residents and commercial users in RedwoodCity is the recycled water fill station. Tis new, reeprogram, which allows users to conserve significantwater by recycling their outdoor irrigation usage, beganor residential uses at the end o May and or commercialin April. Both uses require a short training on how tohandle and use recycled water. Users can enjoy unlimitedree visits to the recycled water fill station, and there areno water restrictions or recycled water usage statewide.Te City would like to remind residents that recycledwater is, however, still a valuable resource and it shouldnot be wasted.

Maximum recycled water amount per visit to the fillstation is 300 gallons. One gallon o water weighs a littleover eight pounds, so residents are encouraged to planahead with the right container to transport water. Tefill station is open Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Other City o Redwood City water conservationprograms include:

Does more wealth lead to more happiness? Researchershave tackled this question or decades, and althoughthe results have differed, one act is certain: Terelationship between money and happiness--or “well-being,” as many researchers put it--is complicated.

Tink before you spend

It is not necessarily how much you make that mattersto overall happiness (although that certainlycontributes), but what you do with your money. Teyboiled down the findings to five “key principles ohappy money.”

1. Buy Experiences. Investingin memories can result in amore sustained level o happinessthan buying a bigger house, a more

luxurious car, or other materialgoods. Buying the latest technologicalgadget might elicit the kind o joy achild experiences opening a new toy onthe holidays, but just like that new toy, thegadget loses its novelty with time.

2. Make It a reat. While you’reinvesting in those experiences, besure to spread them out so theydon’t become expectationsor habits. In this way,the novelty o each new experience will be ully

realized. As the book says, “Abundance is the enemy oappreciation.” Tis is also true with something as simpleas a cappuccino. I you make it a daily ritual, it becomesa habit. I you instead substitute your daily coffee oncea week with a roth-covered treat, then it becomes areward to savor.

3. Buy ime.  Individuals should ask themselves thequestion, “How will this purchase change the way I usemy time?” For example, will it allow you to spend moretime with your riends or amily, or create more “to-dos” to clog your list? Will it ree you up to participatein more activities you enjoy? Investing in products orservices that allow you to spend time on the things youlove will lead to greater overall well-being. And, say theauthors, don’t all into the trap o putting a dollar valueon your time, as this leads to increased stress levels.“Simply eeling like your time is valuable can make itseem scarce.”

4. Pay Now, Consume Later. Paying or a treat orexperience up ront, such as event tickets you buymonths in advance, allows you to benefit romthe extended pleasure o eager anticipation. With

may be the best part. Converselycredit cards can be a dangerous

albeit convenient, financial toolacilitating a “consume now, paylater” dynamic. One study cited

in Happy Money ound that all 30people surveyed underestimated

their monthly credit-card bills by asizable average o nearly 30%.

5. Invest in Others. Regardless o yourcircumstances--wealthy or not, youngor old--research finds that spending

money on others leads to greaterhappiness than spending on onesel

While some experts differ onwhether higher incomes result ingreater levels o happiness, they tendto agree on the ollowing: Increasingdebt levels are detrimental tohappiness, and keeping up with the

Joneses can lead to a general senseo dissatisaction. Instead

actively managing debtwhile finding ways to

appreciate what you alreadyhave on a day-to-day basis may help you make well-

thought-out saving and spending choices that supportyour overall level o well-being.

current standard o living in retirement, a generaguideline is to accumu- late enough savings to replace60% to 90% o your current income in retirement—asum that could equal hundreds o thousands o dollarsor more. And with retirements that can last 20 to 30years or longer, it’s essential to actor in inflationwhich can take a big bite out o your purchasing powerand has averaged 2.5% per year over the past 20 years(Source: Consumer Price Index data published by theU.S. Department o Labor, 2013).

So with these two competing financial needs and ofenlimited unds, what’s a parent to do?

Craf beer 101 is in session. Te word “session” is

one that we at Te Grill House get asked ofen. Manypredict session beers to be the next category o beerto experience a surge in growth, much the way o theImperial IPAs and Bourbon barrel-aged beers, butbeore that can happen, people must come amiliarwith the term session.

Tere are two uses o the word session in craf beerwhich has created some conusion in the past, althoughthey are related. A drinking “session” is a period o timededicated to, o course, drinking. Basically, sessionsare all about drinking large quantities o beer with agroup o riends. Sessions have been used in the pastor many things, including political gatherings, teambuilding events and your basic day-drinking event.

A drinking session can become challenging or some, especially with the popularity o craf beer, and moreimportantly Imperial IPAs which are sometimes northo 9% ABV. wo o those and your session may belimited. Tus, the idea o a session beer was born.

Summer SessionTe idea or a session beer has been around or a long

time. Go to any college campus and you’ll see studentengaging in drinking sessions with the like o BudLight, PBR, Keystone Light, etc. But with the popularityo craf beer and the desire or better beers with moreflavor that offered lower ABVs came the term sessionbeer, and their recent popularity.

A session beer is defined as any beer that is lower than4.5% ABV and thus can be enjoyed in a single sessionmultiple times. Many o the top local breweries aregetting into the act. Firestone Walker Brewing out oPaso Robles has been producing Easy Jack, a session

IPA that comes in at 4.5% ABV while Drakes Brewingout o San Leandro has their own session IPA: AlphaSession, a 3.8% ABV beer. Even Lagunitas Brewingout o Petaluma came out with a session style beer in2012, although their Dayime “ractional” IPA comesin at 4.65%, just high enough to avoid the distinctiono being labeled a “session” IPA.

With the continued growth o craf beer, make sure

Happy summer! School isout, but June was quite busy.We refinanced $28 million

o construction bonds atlower interest rates, whichwill save taxpayers $3million dollars in bondpayments. Additionally, weadopted new instructionalmaterials (textbooks) inmath, reading, and social-emotional learning. Temath and reading materials align to the new statestandards, and the social-emotional learning materialswill help our students develop strong social skills and

promote saer, more respectul school climates.

As you may know, all Caliornia students in grades 3-8and 11 took new state tests in English and Math thisspring. In August, parents o those students will receivetest results or their individual students. Te new testshave a new scoring system. On each test, students wilreceive a scaled score between 2,000 and 3,000 as welas one o our perormance rankings: standard notmet, standard nearly met, standard met, or standardexceeded. While the transition to these new tests is anadjustment, we are confident in our school district’s

approach. Last summer, we invested heavily in teachertraining or reading instruction, and this summer, weare partnering with the Silicon Valley Math Initiative toprovide our teachers with a week-long training on ournew math textbooks as well as instructional strategiesaligned to the new standards. Our teachers are key tothe quality o our instructional program, and we wilcontinue to invest in their knowledge and skills.

As always, thank you or your support o our schooldistrict. Please contact me with input, questions aboutour district, or inquiries or how you can volunteer in

the schools! Te first day o the new school year will beWednesday, August 26.

Sincerely,

Michael Milliken, [email protected]

We all like to think our homes are pet-prooed, but arethey really? Tere are some very clever and sneakingdogs and cats out there! We don’t want you to have an“uh-oh” situation, so here are 6 things you can easilydo to help pet proo your home.

1) Keep those candies and nuts out o Fido’s reach!Chocolate is toxic to dogs and nuts can be dangerousas well. I have known o dogs who can get into anunwrapped bar or box o chocolate. Make sure it iskept out o reach.

2) Make sure any medications are not sitting on thecounter. Te sound o pills “rolling” in a plastic bottlemay very well be irresistible to your dog or cat. I theychew on that prescription bottle enough, they caningest those pills!

3) I you use moth balls, be sure that your dog and catcannot get at them! Some cats love to sleep in the closet.Make sure you have not put any moth balls anywherein the closet. Not only are the umes toxic, i they tryto sample a moth ball, you will have a vet emergency.

4) Have you checked the security o your garbage canlid? I’m talking about the one inside your house. Manydogs and cats have ound bones, ood wrappers withlef-over ood and more. I have witnessed more thanone client with a kitchen garbage can that only openswhen you wave your hand over the sensor button.Great idea, but I’ve also witnessed at least one dog who

figured out it would open whenever he walked by thesensor button. What a goldmine or the dog – not soor the owner!

5) Keep your hobby supplies out o reach. Many ous have hobbies that require us to use

paints, needles, threads, small parts, etc. Put those things away as

soon as you are finished. Orshut the door so “Fluffy”

can’t get into the roomwith those attractive

items.

6 ) H o u s e h o l dc l e a n e r s ,insecticides,

a n t i r e e z e ,ertilizers and thelike need to be keptunder lock andkey. I you haveyoung childrenyou probably

the poodle, and the poodle was crying in pain as thelarger dog attacked. Te owner o the poodle rushed into separate the dogs and suffered a bite on her lef arm

that ortunately did not break the skin.

Te poodle-owner asked the other dog owner or herphone number because her poodle was clearly injuredTe woman reused to give her phone number andcalled the poodle a wimp.

Tis is a reminder that the Redwood City Rules andRegulations regarding dogs in public areas apply toRedwood Shores. According to Sec 25.2.05, dogs inpublic areas must be led by a leash o suitable strengthAND no more than 6 eet in length.

Furthermore, the person controlling, or having thecustody o any dog shall be responsible or all damagescaused by such dog and shall remove and dispose otheir dog’s waste.

Te bottom line is that, as much as we all love our dogs, they can be unpredictable in their behavior. Pleaseremember to obey leash laws, and have respect or yourneighbors. I the laws are not obeyed, your dog could beimpounded and declared a public nuisance by AnimalControl.

already have these items securely locked away. I youdon’t have children at home, please be sure to lock

these so they are out o reach o your dog and cat.
